Hawaii Revisited

It's been cold, like really, really, cold lately and I am aching for summer weather, shorts and my comfy tevas. It's bad. It's not even December and I shiver at the idea of winter. So in moments of despair at the thought of snow, ice, freezing temperatures and all things cold, I think back to September, to our trip to Hawaii. Immediately, I am transported back to the swaying palms, the warm breezes and the endless amount of sunlight. And just for a moment, I escape this thing called winter and remember what it was like to be in paradise.

So if you are in need of a pick me up, an escape from this all too familar New England weather, then please journey back with me to the islands and, just for a moment, escape these winter blues....

Wedding Love: The First Look

When Dave and I were married four and a half years ago (WOW time flies!) we had no idea what a First Look was. Heck, we knew nothing about getting married except that we wanted too! Before I walked down the aisle I was a ball of nerves. For me it was a matter of butterflies, anxiety, and an overwhelming feeling of being excited. Kind of like your first day of school mixed with the thought of meeting Santa Claus in the flesh. I really had no idea what to think at that moment except that I needed to breath into a paper bag, immediately.

Our "first look" of each other was walking down the aisle. It was beautiful and I treasured that moment as my dad lead me towards my future husband. But what I missed, not seeing Dave before the ceremony, was my husband whispering in my ear "You are beautiful" and his gentle embrace as we enjoyed our moment together. Instead we shared that moment with 100 people staring at us, saying those things with glances from across the room. All while I tried to wipe the tears from my eyes and the snot from my nose. It was raw emotion that I wanted to share with Dave but instead we moved right into the ceremony.

Looking back, if we had known, we would have done a First Look. For us, seeing each other before the ceremony, would have been a time to enjoy each other and reflect on the commitment we were about to make.

So you might be wondering, why people choose to not see each other before the ceremony in the first place.  After a quick Google search, this is what I found.

This is an excerpt from www.snopes.com: "Though in older times it was customary for the about-to-be-married to accompany each other on the walk to the church on their wedding morning, modern custom dictates that bride and groom not see each other before the ceremony. Why this is so is a bit of a mystery, with the most popular guess so far postulating that the build-up to the lady's unveiling at the altar possibly keeps the groom from getting cold feet and rethinking the whole matter."

Keeping that in in mind, here are some good reasons why to see each other before:

-The bride and groom are relaxed, after being able to see each other.

-There is no stress from trying to hide each before the ceremony.

-Many of the photographs of the groom and bride along with the bridal party and family formals can be taken BEFORE the ceremony. That leaves time for you to mix and mingle at your cocktail or have a long receiving line, without worrying about interfering with your portrait time. This also means that your friends and family can immediately enjoy their time at the reception.

-Typically if the couple decides to see each other before the ceremony, we have much more time for photographs. This is particularly important the later in the year it gets. With less time and light to work with, the less time we have for portraits with the couple.

- Like, I talked about in my own experience above, the couple get to see each other alone for the first time, instead of in front of a large crowd of people. That raw emotion they are feeling, they can express to each other, privately.

- Likewise, since you are not in front of all of your guests, family and friends, the groom typically feels more comfortable to express himself and will more likely have a genuine reaction upon seeing his bride.

So how does the First Look work?

The bride and groom will typically get dress separately. We will pick a place mutually agreed upon place to have the First Look. I will have the groom arrive at that location first, give him a hug and remind him that this is their moment together and to enjoy seeing his bride for the first time!

I will then give the bride a head's up that we are good to go, and typically she will walk up behind her groom and tap him on the shoulder. From here, I will back up, put on a longer lens, and allow the bride and groom to have a moment all to themselves. The groom and bride feel comfortable to express themselves completely since they are alone together. Typically, some of the most emotional and powerful images that I photograph on a wedding day, come from the First Look. After the couple gives me a signal that they are ready, we will take a few moments to photograph the couple.

There are many benefits to choosing to do a First Look but it is not for everyone. I hope that you have a bit more information to make an educated decision on what is right for you!

And with that, here is my favorite image from OUR wedding day!

Ask Anything: What’s In My Camera Bag

*UPDATED to include 100 Macro 2.8L in Lenses*

I often get asked what's in my bag, what camera bags do I use, or what lens did I use for a specific image. I thought I'd tackle some of those questions in my very first FAQ blog post!

Think Tank I carry everything I need with me in my rolling Think Tank Airport Security V2. I love this thing! It can carry everything, plus I can adjust the inside dividers to fit my specifications. This bag holds almost ALL of my gear (minus camera bodies which I carry on my person and light stands) so its perfect for weddings and traveling. In fact this bag has traveled with me across the country and I wouldn't travel with any other bag. During a wedding I'll roll this along with me or if we are at the reception I'll place it near the DJ table where I can access lenses and flashes easily.

Shootsac I love my Shootsac. To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect from this bag. It is very popular and I wasn't completely sure that it would be able to fit my needs on a wedding day. I can say after MANY uses, this bag fits the way I shoot perfectly. Again, I don't carry a camera body in this bag, but rather the immediate lenses that I might need for a specific scenario. If I don't need it, it will stay in my Think Tank bag. I also keep things like a wallet, business cards, phone, car keys and other necessities in the back of this bag so that I can access them quickly. Camera Bodies My main camera body is the 5d Mark II. You can read more of my review of this camera here.  I also carry with me two back up cameras, the 1d Mark II and the 30d and even my Powershot G10. You can never be sure what will happen on a wedding day, and I want to make sure I am covering all my bases.

Lenses

16-35mm 2.8L

The very first Canon lens I ever bought (I was previously a Nikon shooter) was the 16-35mm 2.8L. I bought this lens because I was a news photographer and needed to have a great story telling lens in my arsenal. This lens definitely fits that bill. Especially on the full frame 5d Mark II. You can get SUPER wide, which can be great for dance floor shots or scene setter images, just be careful of the distortion on the edges, especially when at 16mm.

16-35mm  f/4.5  1/80 ISO 1250

70-200mm 2.8L

The next lens I purchased was the 70-200mm 2.8L IS, again because I was a news photographer and needed a versatile sports lens. This is definitely my go to lens for the ceremony and for some of the portraits. During the ceremony I use this lens to get tight into the action without interfering with what is going on. I also think this is a great lens to use during the portraits as it compresses the elements and helps to separate the subject from the background.

70-200mm  f/4.0   1/1250   ISO 500

24-70mm 2.8L

The 24-700mm 2.8L is my go to lens when I need something that will be versatile and give me the flexibility to change my focal length whenever I need to. I can get wide, then tight, then wide again, without having to switch lenses. This is a great lens to use when you are first starting out and learning your camera. You have such variety in focal length, you can shoot a multitude of scenarios without having to change your lens. When I first got this lens I used it almost exclusively until I purchased this next lens....

24-70mm  f/5.6   1/100  ISO 2500

50mm 1.2L

I LOVE LOVE LOVE about the 50mm 1.2L! It is definitely worth its expensive price tag. The bokeh, the colors, everything about this lens is fabulous. I typically use this lens during our portrait time with the couple and I just move my body closer or farther away from the subject to achieve whatever look I going for. I also use this lens to shoot details, such as the dress, or the cake and centerpieces.

50mm  f/1.8 1/200 ISO 1250

100 Macro 2.8L

I might have a new favorite lens, the 100m Macro 2.8L. Oh boy this lens is amazing. It's great for shooting details, such as rings, jewelry, table settings or anything where I need to get in close to the subject. Like really, really close! The depth of field (because you are so close:)) its pretty amazing as well. It's been fun to have a new tool in the camera bag and I can't wait to start using baby regularly during my wedding season this year!

Lighting I have three 580 EX II Flashes, pocket wizards, a battery pack, light stands and umbrellas. Typically, if I can, I stay away from using flash up until the reception.  At the reception, I will have one flash on my camera and one on a light stand. I like to use the off camera light as an accent to whatever I am shooting and it is a great way to get some dimension into your images. Lighting is definitely an investment ( I am still building my lighting kit), but an investment that will help your work stand out.

There are two pieces of equipment that I am still wanting to purchase. I am looking at the 100mm 2.8L Macro and the 85mm 1.2L to add to my arsenal. So hopefully some day soon, I'll have a blog post about my new additions;)

So there it is! My camera bag. If you have any questions about equipment, what I use to shoot what or anything else, feel free to ask away in the comment section below! Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Featured: Becoming the Mrs.

I am so excited to share with you, AGAIN, that Emily and Jay's wedding has been featured on Becoming the Mrs. People sure do love their beautiful fall wedding from this past October! I hope you stop by and check out their feature. Becoming a Mrs. is a great resource for all those budget savvy brides out there, and definitely is a great resource for all your planning.  Thank you Kym, I am honored and excited to seem my work on Becoming the Mrs.!

Product Highlight: DVD Packaging

I have felt for a while that my DVD packaging could use a little pick me up. And with the launch of my new website, logo and branding, I felt that now was a better time than ever to start! But where to begin? There are SO many options out there and it can get VERY overwhelming at times, trying to pick and choose the best products to offer your clients. I loved, loved, LOVED, Cypress and their DVD folios, but their price tag made my wallet want run and hide in fear.

The Cypress folios are beautiful, but I wanted to see if there was a way that I could take that look and try to create something on my own.

So I headed over to Bay Photo to see what they had for DVD folios. I had originally ordered some leather folios from there a while back and wasn't to excited about the final product. But I remembered that they also offered a linen option and thought I'd give that a chance.

As soon as I received my order in the mail, I knew that I would love these folios. The linen is a soft, textural fabric that fits in great with my new re-branding. So with that I set to work, visiting several local craft stores until I found the perfect ribbon. Armed with some glue and scissors I busily cut and pasted the ribbon on. Here is the final product.

There ya go. With a little elbow grease, I created a look that was all my own. Is it exactly like Cypress? No, but I'm ok with that, and I really enjoy how each of these folios are slightly different and unique.

So, if I owe you a DVD, and I know who you are;), not to worry. Your handmade:) DVD folios are on their way, heading to your home soon! Enjoy!

Like the Griswold's Only Better....

Every Christmas since I was born, on the first weekend of December, my family has woken up at the crack of dawn in search of the perfect Christmas tree. At a invitation-only Christmas tree farm. In New England. It's like a Christmas card come to life. Now this this is not just a go-and-get-any-old-tree kind of production! No way! We scour the farm, looking up and down the rows of perfectly planted trees looking for, well, the perfect one. One that would be worthy of placement in our living room. The tree of course has to be certain height. Not to short and not to tall. It has to be full with strong branches for heavy ornaments. The tree must have a sturdy trunk. But most of all, this tree must have the certain kind of nostalgic Christmas-y feeling that we love.

When Dave and I were dating I told him that the annual getting of the Christmas Tree might be one of the most important family outings for our tiny family unit that we undertake all year. I don't think he fully believed me until we got married. Now he's been roped into the annual getting of the Christmas tree for not only the Hammond family, but now our little Parker family :)

So imagine my excitement this week, when I received our little notice and card announcing that it was that time of year again! Call us crazy, but this is one of the things, we all look forward to, every year.

So in celebration of our Christmas Tree obsessed family, here is one of my favorite scenes from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I don't really see the resemblance... do you? ;)

The Office Remodel Part I

When we bought our home just over a year ago, one of the features that I loved most about it was the lofted space on the second floor. Open to the dining room below with a spare bedroom off to the side, I thought this was the perfect space for my office. I had hopes, that one day, this would be a space where I could meet with clients, hang art work and use as a place to grow my business. After a year of working within this dark, brown space. I couldn't take it anymore. I needed a change and I wanted to start to immediately.

So I decided to bite the bullet and head to Home Depot for some paint. And paint we did!

Here is what we were working with before: a dark, gloomy and just not my style, space.

Before: (these photos were taken before we even moved in, while we were going through the inspection)

Three paint samples and an entire coat of primer later, we started in with our new color. We ended up picking a very soft, neutral shade. I am all for using color and contrast in design, but since we were working with a LOT of wall space and it was going to be for my office we decided to go safe and punch it up with furniture, accessories and canvases later!

After:

Now, isn't that cheerier?! I love going upstairs and being welcomed by sunlight and bright, crisp walls, even on gloomy overcast days. Before, it would have been like working in a cave.

This office remodel is FAR from over. We have canvases to order and hang, furniture to purchase, accessories to decorate with and more. And of course, I'll be walking through it all right here!

Ask Anything: Stalking...errr Blog Stalking of Course!

If someone were to count how many hours I spend scrounging through blogs, they might immediately put me into rehab, internet rehab of course.

But as a first time business owner, the information I have found out there in the blog-o-sphere has been integral to my growth as a photographer and entrepreneur. I find daily inspiration from the blogs that I follow; anything from home improvement to photography. My web surfing covers the gamut. People are full of fascinating ideas, thoughts and art, and I love, LOVE, soaking it all in.

So, in no particular order, here are some of my favorite blogs that I frequent and why:

Justin and Mary -- Do I really need to explain why I love these two?? Down to earth, real people who share their love of photography and each other daily:) And how can I mention Justin and Mary without Julia! This trio pumps out some of the most beautiful wedding imagery. And they are also fellow New Englanders!:)

Jasmine Star --  Cliche as it may be, Jasmine is responsible for me becoming a wedding photographer (even if she doesn't know it:) ) After seeing her work three years ago, I realized that I could not only become a wedding photographer, but I could become the kind of wedding photographer that I wanted to be. I could follow my own road, shoot how I see the world and not worry about falling into a certain, one size fits all box. This has been INVALUABLE to me and I give her all the credit for helping me begin to dream.

Morgan Matters -- Morgan's images are so adorable. They have this playful feeling to them that I just adore. And she's a really sweet person to boot!

Shyla -- Shy is one of those people, that when you meet her, you immediately fall in love with her personality! I found her blog just over a year ago and have been lucky enough to get to know her since. I couldn't believe that she was in the New England area, creating these stellar images of places that I knew and loved! She is so talented and I love visiting her blog to see what she has come up with next. Her eye is incredibly unique.

Katelyn James -- What to say about Katelyn! I found her through Jasmine Star's blog several years ago. I followed her and just loved her (she is a fellow red head of course;) ) This past WPPI, I was sitting in a HUGE room waiting for Jasmine to begin her presentation when I turn around to find Katelyn sitting there! She is just an amazing photographer and a wonderful person, a great combination. I feel I can relate a lot to her as we are similar in age, in infancy in business, and she was recently married!:) (We've been married for four years but still like to pretend we are newlyweds...)

Michelle Moore -- Do you love fashion? Then you HAVE to check out Michelle's blog. She is amazingly talented. Her work is literally like eye candy. Anytime I need inspiration and fresh ideas, I go straight to her blog.

Jennifer Skog -- I just recently started following Jenn's blog. She is EXTREMELY talented and her work is SO fashion forward. Her images are dramatic, fun and fresh. I just love everything about her images. While our styles are completely different I love finding inspiration through her work.

Bobbi + Mike -- Ooohhh, what can I say about Bobbi + Mike. I've never met them, but so was struck by their blog and Bobbi's writing that I HAD to write to them and thank them for all that they share. Their images are completely unique and I love that. They take regular couples and produce some of the most creative and beautiful work. DEFINITELY check them out.

Susan Stripling -- Susan's is another recent blog that I follow. Her images are dramatic, beautiful and timeless. I just ADORE her work. I hope some day that I can create images as moving and beautiful as hers.

Jamie Delaine -- Who doesn't love Jamie? When I first visited her blog, I expected to see someone in her thirties who has built her business up over the years. But instead I found a girl, just about to graduate from HIGH SCHOOL. I've loved being able to watch as Jamie grows up, continuing to push the limits with her work. It's really fun to experience her journey with her.

Non Wedding Related:

The Big Picture -- As a photojournalist, I LOVE looking through others work, especially from around the world. If you haven't checked out The Big Picture, GO. NOW.

VII -- This isn't a blog, but an agency's website. But just look through it. You will walk away amazed.

Young House Love -- I think its the fact that we bought our house a year ago that makes this blog so near and dear to my heart. A young couple fall in love, buy a house, decorate said house, have a baby and get famous;) But beyond that they offer awesome tips and tricks for how to take an old drab house and to turn it into a home.

Yellow Brick Home -- In the same category as Young House Love, Yellow Brick Home, is written by a young couple living in Chicago. That ALONE makes this blog awesome:) She also offers awesome decorating tips and tricks. Here's to happy blog surfing!! Enjoy!

A New Look for Deborah Zoe Photo

So you might have noticed that things look a little different around here! Well, two weeks ago I launched the new and improved www.deborahzoephoto.com . It was a LONG time coming. Earlier this year I contacted my good friend and talented designer, Tara of Stupendous Design to see if she was interested in working together to create a new look and feel for Deborah Zoe Photo. Tara had created the original logo for my business almost three years ago. I loved what she created and it served me well. It gave me a professional look and something to lean on as a budding professional.

But as time went on, I realized that, while I liked they way the logo looked, it didn't really fit who I was becoming. I wanted something new, that connected with the photographer that I am today.

Well, Tara eagerly went to work, coming up with several designs for a logo. I wanted something that was fun, fresh, romantic and girly. This is what she created:

I think I screamed when I saw the first rough draft. I loved it! It completely fits me and my clients. We tweaked the font a little, played with the location of the heart, even down to the color of the gray font, to come up with the finished product above. Ah, swoon, I love love love it :)

From there we eagerly set out to rebrand my entire marketing collection from Thank You cards to business cards to letterheads and more. It's a lot of work and a lot of back and forth. I'm not one who can make decisions easily, so Tara's patience came in extra handy during this step of the process:)In the end, I finally felt like I had something that I was proud to give to potential clients.

Once that was all completed we began to tackle the web presence. This was the most important step in the brand revamp to me. I wanted my online presence to be professional and personal, acting like my own online storefront where visitors could not only see my work but to also get to know me. To begin, I created a design board and sent it off to Tara. It's a hodge podge all things that I love:

We tossed around ideas of love letters, Paris, romance, Robert Doisneau, and more. Well from there Tara, worked her magic. She took what I wanted, mixed it with things  that I love and then added her own splash of creativity to create something really unique. I wanted visitors to have an experience when they visited the site and to get a feel for who I am not only as a photographer but also a person and I think Tara understood exactly what I was looking for.

I truly LOVE the final outcome and couldn't be more thankful to Tara for all her hard work and for listening to all of my requests, anxieties and ramblings.

So there it is, the new and improved Deborah Zoe Photo. I hope that you will visit the site to learn more about me and who I am, to view the galleries and leave your feedback in the bottom right hand corner ;). If you'd like to learn more about the design process and detailed info on how we worked through the various stages, just shoot me an email, I'd be happy to chat about it with you!

James & Jessica's Wedding at The Nashua Radisson

Statements of "She's beautiful," and "She looks like a princess" filled the air as Jessica got ready with her ladies at the Nashua Radisson on a clear, crisp, beautiful fall day. Jessica busily floated around the room, a perpetual smile on her face. She couldn't wait to become a wife, to James. James makes her smile, makes her laugh, makes her heart full. They complete each other and bring two families together to become one. Their day was nothing short of perfect and it was a privilege to be able to witnesses it. Jess and James thank you so much for welcoming Spring and I, your wedding was a joy to document!

Jess added a special touch to the bottom of her shoe ;)

Jess had an amazing eye for detail. I loved all she did with the flowers and details of the day.

Her beautiful lace detailed dress.

Time to get dressed.

The beautiful bride.

Time to get married!

They had a beautiful and special ceremony celebrating their two families becoming one.

Just married!

This is definitely not my normal style but I thought I'd try something a little new.

Jessica's grandmother made their beautiful cake!

Checking out his new wife!

Instead of being announced right into their first dance, Jess and James invited EVERYONE onto the dance floor to celebrate with them!

Time to party!!

Everyone got onto the dance floor and celebrated all night long!

Jessica's daughter and James' daughter decided to surprise everyone with their own choreographed dance.

Mom was completely surprised:)!

Jess and James, enjoying their beautiful night.

Ch'ch'ch chaannnges!

I know, I know. I've been absent for a while again. But I promise, it's for a GOOD reason! I am so excited for what's coming up for Deborah Zoe Photo. We have been working HARD around here and I can't wait to share with you all that we have been up to! But for now another sneak peek. Make sure to stop back again soon for all the up to date info on the big announcement:)!

Life Captured: The Hyun Family's Portsmouth Portraits

I met up with the Hyun family on a blustery fall day in New Hampshire for some fun in downtown Portsmouth. They are such a beautiful family with adorable kiddos and strong love for each other. Their love and faith are such an inspiration and I feel honored to be been able to document their family. Carrie and Sam, thank you for being so gracious, rockin' it out in front of the camera and for just being you.
