Things I Can't Live Without : Photo Mechanic

Welcome to another installment of Things I Can't Live Without. A little series I started to share all the programs and tools that help my business function better. Last week I talked about my Drobo and how I backup all my images. This week I'm gushing about Photo Mechanic. 

I was first introduced to Photo Mechanic when I was working as news photographer. Up until that point I had been plodding along in Bridge (an image viewing program) and it was sucking the life out of me. It would take FOREVER to organize, cull and select images from shoots. A lot of time was WASTED using a program that was inefficient for me. 

But then, cue the hallelujah chorus. I was introduced to Photo Mechanic and my life would never be the same. Dramatic? Maybe, but this program has revolutionized my life as a photographer. When I worked as a news photographer we often had to shoot, cull, and upload images all within a matter of minutes. There was no room for wasted time. Photo Mechanic allowed us to move quickly through our images. We could easily see our images, ta the ones we liked, quickly open them in Photoshop and upload them to the network. 

In my own day to day workflow, Photo Mechanic is a work horse, processing hundreds of images a day. For example, over the weekend I shot two weddings and an engagement session. Within the span of a few hours I was able to cull through thousands of images, select my favorites, rename those favorites and move to a new folder. BAM! Thank you Photo Mechanic! 

The speed of which I do something is key to a productive day. Without Photo Mechanic I'm not sure I'd get anything done! This is one program that I definitely could NOT live without. If you're a photographer, invest in this program. Then cue the hallelujah chorus;).

Life Captured : Meet Aubrey

Meet the adorable, the fabulous, the wonderful Aubrey. Aubrey is a local wedding photographer who was in need of portraits for her new website and she asked me a few months back if we could set up a time to head down to Newport, RI. Well, THREE rescheduled shoots later we finally made it down last week. If I was being totally honest, I was a littler nervous. It's intimidating photographing another photographer. But Aubrey immediately put me at ease with a huge hug and smile. We spent the morning gushing about her new baby boy, talking shop and dreaming about the future. I'm so honored to call Aubrey my friend and I can't wait to see what the next few month holds for her and her business. Look out world, this mama is takin' it by storm!

Product Highlight | Signature Album

I've mentioned it before, but I believe it deserves to be repeated again and again. Wedding albums are important. In a world that values the NOW instead of the past, present and future, it seems like wedding albums are becoming less and less important to couples getting married. Once they have their images they store them away, sometimes never even printing them. These images are never experienced, never shared. They stay on a cd or harddrive and that is where they live. In short, these images are never ENJOYED. But as your wedding photographer that is NOT what I have in mind as I document your love story.

Abby and Devin's wedding album arrived last week. And as I flipped through it's pages, I was reminded WHY I feel so passionately about wedding albums. I was reminded that THEY ARE IMPORTANT. And it's not just because of their beautiful craftsmanship, their quality, or their design. Because to me, and to you, it's more than just images on a page. It's an experience, it's a memory, it's an heirloom. Your wedding album is something to be shared, to be enjoyed and to be treasured. Every time you open the pages of your album, you are transported back to that day, your guests. Every time you open the pages of your album you relive your first dance, the toasts and exactly how you felt that day.

Isn't that worth the time, the effort and the investment? You bet.

I think it might be safe to say that I am in love with a piece of technology. And no it's not one of my Apple products;)! It's my Drobo, the system that I use to backup all of my files. This machine is a beast, copying and transfering thousands upon thousands of RAW files, documents and videos almost daily. It gives me piece of mind and is incredibly safe and reliable. I can't imagine running my business without it!

When I first started the business the only backup system I had was my external 1 tb hard drive. It served me well at the beginning but as the business grew so did the amount of files I created. I needed something bigger to store all of my images PLUS something that I knew I could rely on to safely store my images. Enter the Drobo.

After much research I purchased the five bay Drobo FS. This bad boy holds five 2tb hard drives and uses RAID technology to make backups of my backups! All I have to do is turn on the Drobo and start copying over files. The Drobo does the rest! I love when technology makes my life EASIER. I know that my images are safe, that there are copies of copies of my files and that I can rely on my Drobo. This is SO important when you are dealing with things like wedding images

I wanted the FS to have the capability to work over my network from any point in the house. This means that the Drobo can hook up to my computer without having to be physically connected to the computer. While the transfering of files is a bit slower over the network, I like the flexibility and desk space this allows.

I'll end by noting that I don't rely SOLEY on my Drobo. While I probably could, I don't. I have copies of files on my desktop, on the Drobo, on a separate hard drive AND on an online gallery that I can download from. You can never be TOO safe when dealing with client's wedding images! If you don't have a backup system, make the investment today. It is SO worth the piece of mind of knowing that your files are safe, secure and backed up!

Travelogue : San Antonio & Austin

It's a busy week around here! I had a portrait session in Newport, Rhode Island today, I'm modeling for a workshop in Connecticut tomorrow, I have a wedding on Friday and Saturday and I'm finishing off the week with an engagement at Ocean House in Rhode Island on Sunday! I'm tired already;)

Last week I was traveling through Texas visiting one of my best and dearest friends, Amy. She and her husband live in Austin and she's been begging me to come out and visit. So I cleared a few days, bought some plane tickets and headed west, er, south, to the Lone Star State. It was a whirlwind trip but we had lots of fun and I truly enjoyed exploring this part of the country. Here's a short recap of the trip. Enjoy!

A Trip To Texas

A June...(Ahem)...May Self Portrait

It's been a crazy month so far! And quite frankly, it seemed like May just FLEW by too! I've been so busy behind the scenes working on weddings, engagements, portraits AND getting ready to launch my new website and blog. Unfortunately it's left little to no time to take a self portrait! So I'm going to cheat and share one of my favorite images taken during a portrait session with Justin and Mary in January! I was having a great hair day, I'm enjoying a delicious cup of joe and I'm relaxing in my office.

-- Shoot some fabulous weddings and engagement sessions EXCEPTIONALLY well.

-- Get caught up on all the back end office work. Ugh.

-- Design and print some new sample albums.

Newport Wedding at Regatta Place

It's so interesting to hear the story of how people meet. And Dave and Lindsey's chance meeting on Facebook is one of those adorable, makes you say "Aw", kind of love stories. Lindsey had been cutting Heather's hair for 5 years. One day Lindsey saw a picture of this cute guy in Heather's Facebook profile and started asking questions. Turns out it was Heather's cousin Dave and we'll, the rest is history. Heather decided to play matchmaker, Dave and Lindsey went on a blind date and have been together ever since! Facebook love story, Le Sigh.

Dave and Lindsey's wedding was FULL of lovely little details. From her amazing Kate Spade footwear to the adorable ring box that held their rings, I was in love with it all! Lindsey pulled together an amazing team of vendors and with the help of her family and friends she organized and executed the wedding of her dreams!

NEwport Wedding at Regatta Place

It's so interesting to hear the story of how people meet. And Dave and Lindsey's chance meeting on Facebook is one of those adorable, makes you say "Aw", kind of love stories. Lindsey had been cutting Heather's hair for 5 years. One day Lindsey saw a picture of this cute guy in Heather's Facebook profile and started asking questions. Turns out it was Heather's cousin Dave and we'll, the rest is history. Heather decided to play matchmaker, Dave and Lindsey went on a blind date and have been together ever since! Facebook love story, Le Sigh. 

Dave and Lindsey's wedding was FULL of lovely little details. From her amazing Kate Spade footwear to the adorable ring box that held their rings, I was in love with it all! Lindsey pulled together an amazing team of vendors and with the help of her family and friends she organized and executed the wedding of her dreams! 

We started the day at the Hyatt Regency Newport which has a stunning view of the harbor.

I first stumbled onto Heart Love Weddings when Alex featured an image of mine from a portrait session last summer. Ever since she's steadily grown the blog to become a resource of wedding tips for brides as well as featuring some amazingly beautiful engagement sessions and real weddings. Her down to earth writing style and passion for love and weddings is what makes this blog a must read.

Grey Likes Weddings

For the modern and stylish bride, definitely head over to Grey Likes Weddings where Summer curates a collection of weddings, products and advice for today's bride. I'm always drooling over the images and weddings she features. Summer has great taste and so she chooses very carefully the wedding she shares. If you are a detailed oriented bride (who loves fashion, style and design) make sure to bookmark Grey Likes Weddings. And then go there every day.

Wedding Chicks is a great resource of the crafty and DIY bride. They have a shop, free printables, tips and tricks and feature the most darling weddings. Ever. The Lone Star State

A Trip Out West

Did you know that in Texas, the state flag is actually allowed to be raised higher than the United States flag? It's just one little tid-bit that I've managed to learn in my first few hours here in the Lone Star state. I'm visiting on of my dearest friends for the week and I'm pretty excited to soak up lots of country music, bbq, cowboy hats, some y'alls and hopefully a Yeehaw or two. It's actually one of my goals to visit 10 new states in the next few years and so far I've already managed to cross off a state and territory! And you bet I can't wait to get out and explore more of this part of the country! 

Needless to say I'm taking some time to relax, get caught up on some work and search for the perfect pair of cowgirl boots! I'll be back in a few days, but until then, y'all have a great week!

A Regatta Place Wedding Sneak Peek

Happy Monday! Today it's' a blustery, cold and RAINY New England day. I suppose it should be good for my production but all I want to do is crawl back under the covers and watch some Downton Abbey! But alas, there is work to be down, namely editing an amazing wedding from this past week. Nothing steals my heart more than a seaside wedding! I just adore the ocean and all things nautical. And Dave and Lindsey did not disappoint with their Newport wedding this past Friday. From her amazing wedding shoes to Dave's adorable coral bowtie, I was just smitten! I can't wait to share more with you later this week on Thursday, but for now enjoy their sneak peek!
