The Art of Balance

A Whole New Schedule

As I type with my one free hand my other gently rocks my baby as I try to get him to sleep in between feedings. This is my life right now : feeding, changing, rocking and cuddling our newborn. It's definitely a change from my usual get up and start the day in the office routine. And I know that blog posts have been few and far between... a BIG no no in the blogging world... but right now my life is about so much more than blog posts and emails.

2013-05-21_0001.jpg

2013-05-21_0001.jpg

It's about this. Thanks to everyone who stops by and helps make this blog what it is. I hope you'll stick with me as me over these next few weeks. SOON, I promise SOON, I'll be returning things back to normal here on the blog. But for now I'm ever so grateful for your patience as we navigate this new life.

I'm pretty sure that face right there is worth a missed blog post or two;)!

May Self Portrait

2013-05-16_0017.jpg

It's pretty CRAZY to think that the last time I posted a self portrait I was still pregnant. It's even crazier to think that as I sit writing this post as my husband cuddles with our baby boy. It's amazing the changes that a day, a week, a month can bring. I mean I'm already two and half weeks into my maternity leave. Could time just slow down, a little?

2013-05-16_0016.jpg

This month's self portrait is brought to you by my lovely friend Erin who graciously came to the house to document Jonathan's newborn pictures. I'll share more soon but for now here are a few of my favorites!! I know I'll look back on these images and marvel at just how teeny tiny he was.. (even though he was one big baby!) What sweet memories these are!!I don't have too many ambitious goals this month beyond just enjoying lots and lots of cuddles with our baby. Gotta get it in while he still wants to cuddle, right?! I'm just so enjoying these days. And while we are pretty darn tired, nothing beats holding our little man. It's something that I truly cannot describe, I never knew my heart could love like this.

So for this month I plan to take it easy, to enjoy my time at home and to begin to get ready for this year's wedding season. Here are my goals for May!

Personal

-- Enjoy every minute with our baby boy!!

-- Clean the house (HA HA HA!)

-- Sleep!!

-- Enjoy a few days away on the cape

-- Enjoy being a GUEST at a wedding later this month!!

-- Continue to work on putting together an album from OUR wedding for my mom!

-- Put together a new budget for our family.

-- Print 2011, 2012 and various vacation photographs.

Business

-- Begin to prep for wedding season.

-- Photograph a beautiful engagement session later this month.

-- Get all gear cleaned and check out.

-- Continue to work on a Client Lounge.

-- Continue to submit past and current work to blogs.

2013-05-16_0020.jpg

-- Order another sample album. These days are so sweet. Having our baby boy has truly forced me to slow down, just a bit, and refocus my life. As I finish this post my baby boy snorts and coos as he sleeps on my chest. What could be better than that? Absolutely nothing. I think I'll spend the rest of May doing just this ;). Happy Friday everyone!!

A Regatta Place Wedding

Thanks to my mom (who is helping me out with the little man this week!) I'm able to blog this lovely little album that made it's way to my office a few weeks back. I chose Dave and Lindsey's Regatta Place wedding for my newest sample album and well, I'm in love!! Once again my album company, Madera, created a beautifully bound album. There is just something so classic and elegant about a simple black leather album. I simply adore working with Madera and I'm always so excited to be able to present their gorgeous albums to my clients!

Happy Anniversary : Kenny & Megan

551829_10150777618611533_1096591972_n.jpg

This year I wanted to make sure that I was able to help celebrate the one year anniversary of my couples from 2012. I love being able to see where the year has taken each couple, what they've learned, what they've experienced. I've always looked back on our first year of marriage with great fondness and I know that my couples feel the same way!!

Well, I've tried to do these posts as close to the actual anniversary as possible, but with our baby's late arrival I've fallen behind just a little. BUT Kenny and Megan have been great sports and were gracious enough to share a bit about their first year, just a few days late! So without further delay, meet Kenny and Megan (again!) and read all about their exciting first year of marriage!

Deborah - Happy anniversary! I simply cannot believe that it has been a year since your wedding! Has time flown by for you too?

K&M - We can't believe how quickly the year went by. It still feels like our wedding was last weekend. Everyone continues to talk about the wedding too, which makes it seem like it wasn't so long ago :).Deborah - What is your favorite memory from your wedding day?

149699_10150777618816533_1577376528_n.jpg

149699_10150777618816533_1577376528_n.jpg

K&M - Dancing! We both danced for almost the entire reception. It was so fun for us to see all of our family and friends enjoying themselves too. Even the grandmas busted some moves. We especially loved the last song of the night (The Good Life - Kanye West) because everyone crowded around us and sang at the top of their lungs. It was an amazing way to end a perfect night!Deborah - What has been the best thing that has happened to you as a couple since your wedding last year?

K&M - My new job. Kenny and I both were commuting over an hour each way to work, so I applied for a new job. Not only are our commutes MUCH shorter, but we are much happier in our new surroundings and are closer to friends and family!

Deborah - What have you learned about each other over this past year?

538705_10150769833551533_1133330836_n.jpg

538705_10150769833551533_1133330836_n.jpg

K&M - I've learned that I'm so lucky to have found someone who is on the same page. Kenny and I both want the same things out of life and appreciate the small things. It's just so easy and we rarely butt heads. Unless there's a Bruins game on at the same time as a new episode of the Real Housewives ;).Deborah - Traveled anywhere fun?

554293_10150753858891533_554764428_n.jpg

K&M - We went to Jamaica for our honeymoon. It was AMAZING! The people were so nice, the water was gorgeous, and nothing can beat those endless pina coladas! We reminisce about the trip constantly and have already talked about going back for an anniversary trip!Deborah - Any tips you can offer newlyweds for their first year of marriage?

560779_10150777620111533_1287870245_n.jpg

560779_10150777620111533_1287870245_n.jpg

K&M - Make a point to continue to "date" each other. Even if you have a movie night at home or go to a casual dinner. It keeps up the romance. Kenny and I went out on a date the other night and talked about when we just had crushes on each other before meeting. It brought back all of those butterflies!Thank you so much Kenny and Meg!! I wish you nothing but laughter and happiness as you begin your second year of marriage. Here's to many more anniversaries to celebrate together!! (And I hope you always argue over the remote control when the Bruins and Housewives are on;)).

The Art of Balance

Life At Home As A New Mom

Jonathan will be two weeks old tomorrow. Dave heads back to work on Wednesday. And life as a new mom truly begins later this week. It's been a surreal past two weeks as we've learned what it's like to have life with a newborn. I'll admit for me that it's been an emotional rollar coaster. Emotional in the sense that I am just overwhelmed with gratefulness for this little man and simultaneously terrified about anything that could harm him. My days are filled with ups and downs. Pure joy when my little man coos at me. Filled with uncertainty and anxiety when we put him down to bed. I'm sure all Moms can relate to this balance between joy in their little one and a severe protectiveness for their child.

Maya came home this weekend after spending a LONG "vacation" with Dave's parents at what we loving refer to as the lake house;). She's not quite sure what to make of this snorting, grunting, pooping, crying "thing" now hanging out in "her" house. More transitions to figure out. I guess that is what life will be like for a while now, figuring out transitions.

I'm pretty emotional thinking about Dave going back to work. I wish he could be here forever and our family could hang out and watch Game of Thrones and Better Off Ted all day long. But I know that's not reality. I will miss this time we've had together. It has been amazingly precious. My love for my husband has grown exponentially in the last two weeks. He has been nothing short of incredible and it's AMAZING to watch him grow as a Dad.

Life as a family of three seems just right. And while there is so much to figure out in terms of day to day life, I'm so happy that this is our life right now. Baby grunts, farts, coos and all.

Jonathan's Birth Story

** Today I'm going to share Jonathan's birth story. I promise it won't be too graphic, but it's certainly a story that I want to share! There are a few "gooey" photos towards the end, but I promise there's nothing that will leave you traumatized!**

When we arrived at the hospital over a week ago we had no idea the marathon that lay ahead of us. Jonathan was a week over due and we were being sent in to be induced. As someone who wanted to try to have as natural a birth story as possible, the idea of being induced was, I admit, depressing. Sunday evening was the start of our induction and before we headed into the hospital I broke down into sobs. Dave held me as I cried and cried asking why it was happening this way. After spending some time praying Dave and I went in ready to start the process.

I remember the nurse who triaged us asking me if I was excited. Excited?! How about terrified! Quickly we were set up and put on the monitor and I waited to find out what would happen next. Unfortunately I was contracting too close together to actually begin the induction process. So after four or five hours of sitting in a triage room we were sent home. I was so excited that perhaps labor was starting on it's own and I went to bed incredibly hopeful.

Monday morning I woke up and nothing had happened. The contractions had stopped completely. It looked like we were headed back into the hospital to be induced. At this point I was ready. Ready to face labor, to face induction and to face a birth story that wasn't exactly how I imagined.

We began the induction process at 10am on Monday morning. The beginning steps required me to take a pill and wait for four hours. Unfortunately the first does did nothing and so we took another. It was a long day of waiting and waiting. We took two doses and I sat for eight hours in a very uncomfy hospital bed. I also had the world's WORST IV placed in my hand. I mean no exaggeration when I say that this IV was more painful than the contractions. For twelve hours I sat with this IV until the best nurse in the world was able to fix it. That face, that's the face of pure frustration. A moment of exhaustion and frustration.

deborah zoe photography birth story photographs newborn photographs boston wedding photographer0005.JPG

For the most part I kept a great attitude but it's hard to stay positive for a 48 hour period! To keep us entertained as we waited for anything to happen related to labor we kept a weight pool on the white board. The longer we stayed the larger the pool got with doctors and nurses guessing too. Little did we know that one of those guesses would be spot on!!

deborah zoe photography birth story photographs newborn photographs boston wedding photographer0006.JPG

Towards the end of Monday evening, around 8pm, my parents arrived to brighten my spirits. We were still in the beginning stages of induction and I was frustrated beyond belief. I found relief in the adorable outfits my parents brought as well as the cutest little bear that played peek a boo. It was the little things at that point!

After my parents left we settled in for the night unsure what would happen next. Over the next few hours we began the next step of induction (an uncomfortable and yucky step) and were able to sleep for a little bit. Sometime in the middle of the night we were finally administered pitocin and were able to rest some more. I awoke to my water breaking and was very excited as it was the one thing in labor I was able to do on my own!! At that point there was no sleeping and labor started to really get going. Thanks to the pitocin the contractions were strong and regular and almost impossible to get through. Between each contraction though I felt great and felt ready to get through the rest of labor naturally.

deborah zoe photography birth story photographs newborn photographs boston wedding photographer0010.JPG

After several hours of laboring I asked the nurse just how long she thought we might have left. In my mind I thought it was just the matter of a few hours. And while those few hours would be HARD Dave and I could get through them together. I really did not want an epidural. I was terrified of it. But the nurse gave it to me straight and said she believed that we still had at least another 12 hours of labor to go. Did she really just say 12 hours?!! There was no way that I could continue to work this hard and still have energy to push 12 hours later. Begrudgingly I gave in and asked for an epidural in hopes that it would allow me to rest and have energy for the hardest part, pushing.

As someone who is terrified of needles and has a HORRIBLE time with ivs (remember?!) I was afraid that the epidural would be a painful and uncomfortable process. But despite my fears, the whole procedure was a breeze. I was even able to still have feeling in my legs and move around a bit. And while I was not allowed to leave the bed, I could still FEEL things, which was exactly what I wanted. I got relief from the pain but mobility in my legs. Awesome! When you are administered an epidural you're not allowed to drink any water except for occasional sips here and there.

deborah zoe photography birth story photographs newborn photographs boston wedding photographer0011.JPG

By the time Tuesday afternoon rolled around I was THIRSTY. So incredibly thirsty. Around 3pm my nurse walked in asking if I wanted a popsicle. I'll never forget that glorious popsicle. It was amazing!!It was also around the same time that our family came in for one last visit. I had dilated enough that we would begin pushing soon. Almost 48 hours since this process began we were getting ready to meet our son. It was such an exciting and overwhelming moment. I was so glad to have our family there to keep us entertained and smiling! That glorious popsicle!!

Dave managed to take lots of pictures during the labor process. I'm so grateful that he took the time to do that and that we have images that documented such a special time in our life. I also love this picture as it was taken just moments before we started to push. Little did I know what the next six hours would bring.

Fast forward three hours later and we found ourselves headed to the ER. After three hours of GOOD pushing our baby just didn't want to come out. And there ended my hopes of a natural labor. If there was one thing I had said through those whole process was that I didn't want a C-Section. And here we we were getting prepped for the OR. I was so exhausted from laboring for so long and for pushing for so hard that I don't remember much of what happened next. But once again Dave was there with the camera to capture it all - the doctor's joked he was the photojournalist Dad;).

We couldn't have asked for a better team to work with. We had the BEST delivering doctor who had a great attitude and sense of humor. He kept us on our toes and his energy was infectious to this exhausted duo.

I remember asking if he was healthy and the doctor making some sort of witty comment about it. I also remember asking them to shave off a few extra pounds while they were in there....

All of this happened as I fell in and out of sleep on the OR table. Our big boy!! Eight pounds, eleven ounces!! Dave brought our son around and I couldn't believe how adorable he was!! He was nothing that I had imagined and he was absolutely perfect!!

Seeing Dave hold our son for the first time was nothing short of amazing, I'll never forget that moment. Shortly afterwards we were rushed into recovery and then brought down to the postpartum floor. Our poor families had waited and waited and waited for Jonathan to be born. They joked that they were like the head table of the waiting room

(Ok skip the next two pictures if you don't like gooey.) But here is Jonathan making his entrance into the world. Did I mention that I'm so grateful to my husband for capturing these moments? I can't describe what it felt like to hear Jonathan's first cry. We had prayed and prayed for a healthy baby and that first cry was an answer to prayer.

There are a few things that you miss when you have a c-section. One of those things is cutting the umbilical cord. Thankfully they left a little bit of the cord so that Dave could have the honor of cutting the cord.

As families came and went they held down the fort and made a lot of noise! I'm so grateful for them and all the support and love they showered on us!! Jonathan was born on April 30, 2013 at 8:51pm. Two days of labor and we finally met our son. It was an exhausting but AMAZING period of our life. I'm so incredibly grateful for him. Because we had a c-section we were given five days in the hospital for recovery. It gave me time to think about the whole experience we just had. And while nothing had happened in the way I imagined it would, I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. In the end we had a beautiful baby boy in our arms.

And while labor was HARD work, it was not the SCARY work that I had originally imagined. Over the next few days we got to know our son more and more. He is an alert, active, little munchkin whose cheeks I could kiss all day long! The grandparents sure are smitten and hug Jonathan every chance they get!!

I had said our son would be born when the sun was shining, the bird chirping and the flowers in bloom. After being the hospital for a week we were welcomed home to trees and flowers blooming everywhere! What an amazing journey we went through and what an amazing journey we are ready to embark on!! For those of you who prayed of us, supported us and kept a Baby Watch for us, thank you. It was your support that helped us get through this whole process and I'm grateful to have shared in the journey with you!!

Life As A Family Of Three

We're home!! After almost a week in the hospital we finally found our way home (plus one!) on Saturday evening. To be able to sleep in your own bed has been nothing short of glorious. And while we are awoken every two hours this time it's to a crying baby not a nurse asking for my vital signs. I simply cannot believe that here I sit, with my baby cooing softly to himself and my husband by my side. Is this my life now because I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

I'll be slowing getting myself back to the blogging schedule, after all we have quite a life adjustment to make here. For now I'll be posting a sneak peek of Baby Boy Jonathan, sharing his birth story and about our transition from pregnancy to life at home with a baby! I can't wait to get back in the swing of things but for now I'm going to go cuddle that little man of mine!!

The Waiting Game

baby boy farm nursery deborah zoe photography boston wedding photographer0021.JPG

I 've been a bad blogger lately. Well, really it's not my fault! A week ago our city was in a state of chaos and this week, well this week I was SUPPOSED to be holding my newborn son. HA! Life always has a way of laughing in the face of your best laid plans! Because today I am still waiting to hold my son who is COMFORTABLY staying put. I have no new shoots to blog about, no new images to share. I made sure that my calendar was cleared for this period of life right now, fully expecting to be knee deep in diapers and spit up. And now I sit wondering what to do!

For the past three days I've received notifications that our baby's due was here! And yet no baby. I never truly expected this to be such an emotionally hard period! I'm sure if you've never experienced this it can be easy to think that I should just suck it up. Go read a book, watch a movie, enjoy this time. And BEFORE I reached this point I felt the same exact way!! But as a very hormonal (STILL) pregnant woman, I can say that my heart goes out to anyone who has waited and waited and waited to meet their baby!

BUT BUT BUT while we simply cannot wait to meet our little man and while this waiting period, this unknown, can be incredibly difficult, we are blessed. A happy, healthy baby and a happy, healthy Mama. After the events of last week I try to keep it all in perspective. I have my family, I have my legs, I have my hearing, I have my eye sight. The challenges my family faces are HAPPY ones. So while I pray for the quick arrival of our son I also earnestly pray for those who need a quick recovery and for those families for whom their babies won't be coming home.

I hope you'll stick with me over the next few weeks as the blogging schedule might be a little off! (After all, who knows when this kid will come!)

A Little Bit Of Honesty

2013-04-18_0001.jpg

Still Not Recovered

I have to admit, quite vulnerably, that this week has been tough. It began on Monday with the shock of the Boston Marathon bombings and continued with a LONG stressful day beginning with a doctor's appointment, a MINOR car accident, and then several hours spent at the hospital for monitoring. My blood pressure was through the roof!! Good news is that this baby is a ok (nothing like playing hangman to entertain yourself in the hospital for four hours to find out you're all ok!) To say that I've taken this week as a REST week would be an understatement. And now I feel like all I am doing is sitting around awaiting this kid's arrival. C'mon kiddo!

It still feels "strange" to blog about weddings and engagements and business advice and all those things right now. So many of my friends are still trying to cope with what happened on Monday. And while they were not injured they are scarred emotionally and mentally. For those of you who may not live in the area of Boston you've most likely continue about your business and life. But here in Boston it seems as if time has stood still, with the news and everyone continuing to talk about the tragedy of Monday. I mean just this morning I watched 40 minute press conference from Boston Medical Center on the status of their patients. Try writing a witty blog post after that.

I think for the rest of the week for my mental state and out of respect, I'll withhold from blogging. It pretty much goes against everything I've built this blog around (I mean I blog 4-5 times a week!). But truly I think that my time would be better spent reaching out to friends, praying for our city and keeping our baby safe:)!

So I hope you'll stick with me over these next few weeks as our family awaits our baby's arrival and as we as a city, state and region grieve a little. I grew up in Massachusetts, I went to school in Boston and we decided to live just outside the city for the past seven years now. Our community as a whole feels this all very strongly. But if there is one thing that I've seen form this tragedy is that there is GOOD in the world, despite what anyone might try to prove otherwise. Good, good, good.

Enjoy the rest of your week and I'll be back here soon!!

Pray For Boston

539937_10100935182084419_314041340_n.jpg

Today I was going to have a different blog post, but I felt that it was inappropriate. Because after yesterday's events things just seem a bit more trivial than before.

I won't wax poetic about the events that surrounded the Boston Marathon yesterday except to say that I am and ask you to continue to pray for our city, the people who were affected, the people who were there and the many who watched in horror as it unfolded. It is an absolute tragedy, a senseless crime. If there is one thing we can do to help those around us it is to comfort, to pray, to support.

Boston is my home. Many people are hurting, are scared, are angry. But as President Obama stated yesterday "Boston is a tough and resilient town, so are its people. I am supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other and move forward as one proud city and as they do, the American people will be with them every single step of the way."

A Recap On Pregnancy

Yesterday Dave drove me up to New Hampshire to enjoy an afternoon at the spa with my mother in law and sister in law. Everyone kept asking me when my due date is (it's a WEEK FROM TODAY folks!!!), how I was feeling and if things had started to get going yet. The short answer is NO. This baby boy is taking his sweet time making his way into the world. So for all those out there wondering, despite our best attempts to start labor with a glorious pedicure yesterday, I am still pregnant.

It's hard to believe that this journey all started last July. It truly began when we found out in August, took a fun turn when we found out it was a boy in November and has SPED towards April. I really can't believe that in just days we will no longer be a family of two (and two animals) but a family of three. I'll be a Mom. Dave will be a Dad. Our life is about to go all topsy turvy!

When I first found out I was pregnant I'll admit I ran the gamut of emotions. Elated, scared, shocked, SCARED, terrified, happy, excited, overwhelmed. All of these feelings, thoughts and emotions ran throughout my body, heart and mind in a matter of minutes. I didn't know what to think. But as Dave and I prayed and lived through the news together our hearts melted into love for this little being growing inside of me. And what was was once just a SMALL little being has turned into a acrobatic baby in my belly.

I wasn't sure how being pregnant would affect our life. Especially for me as I run my own business and work from home. Would I still be able to work? Would I still be able to shoot weddings? Would I still be able to do what I love? And the short answer has been yes!! Much to my surprise I was able to accomplish every goal, shoot, and (MOSTLY) write every blog post I set my mind to. I was able to do these things well and while it wasn't always easy it was doable. I look back on these last nine (nearing ten!) months astonished at the opportunities God presented to me as pregnant woman and how He has been faithful to keep our growing baby and I healthy through this whole journey.

As I write this post and think about the upcoming days, weeks and months of our lives I find myself reliving those first emotions I felt when we found out we were pregnant. Elated, scared, shocked, SCARED, terrified, happy, excited, overwhelmed. But as I work through those emotions, I am confident that just as God has walked with us through our pregnancy, He will walk with us through our first few months of parenthood and beyond. I'm excited to balance life as a working mom. I know it won't be easy, I know that there are sacrifices to be made. But I can't wait to share life doing what I love most : being a mom and being a photographer (oh and being a wife too;)).

There are so many of you who have celebrated with us already and I am continually blown away by your love and support for this little dude you haven't even met yet. Your support and encouragement has inspired me to keep going, especially on the not so glamourous days of pregnancy. I love that my blog is a place to not only share beautiful images but life as well. I know that there will be LOTS more to celebrate and experience together as we enter this new phase and I'm excited to continue to walk through life together!

To everyone who stops by once a week, every day or once in a blue moon, thank you. Thank you for your prayers, love, support and encouragement. And Little Baby Parker thanks you too! Here's to many more weddings, engagements, portraits, love and a growing family!! Who knows, we could be a family of three next Monday!!

Getting The Most From Your Shoot

Happy Friday everyone!! What a difference a week makes. Last Friday I was sweating bullets as I photographed my last engagement session before baby and this week I'm wrapped in blankets and hiding from the cold. Oh New England you never cease to surprise!!

As I thought back about my last few sessions I tried to think about why I felt like they were successful. And for me it all came back to the experience that my clients receive as they are photographed. I want natural and candid emotion from the people in front of my camera, that is what makes an image successful in my book. But it doesn't JUST happen when I lift my camera, I have to help my clients feel comfortable and trusting to let me in on that emotion. Below are the steps that I take to encourage those natural emotions from my clients as we move through the portraits.

1. Give them permission.

MIT engagement session boston wedding photographer deborah zoe photography MIT wedding00121.JPG

MIT engagement session boston wedding photographer deborah zoe photography MIT wedding00121.JPG

One of the first things I do with my clients BEFORE the session even starts is give them a pep talk. I explain to them that above anything else, our time together should be FUN! I want my couples to laugh and enjoy every minute we have together. I explain to them that there is no right or wrong and that I'll be giving them LOTS of direction as we move about. But ultimately I want them to forget about me and enjoy each other!! As the photographer it is up to ME to give leadership and direction to my clients. That means I need to give them permission to be goofy, to have fun and to love on one another. They need to hear from me that they are free to be their amazing selves. This has been instrumental to the success of each session and opens up the doors of trust with my clients!!2. Give Direction AND USE THEIR NAMES!

I explain to every client that I work with that my goal is to create intimate and natural images. And while I want them to be free to move about and interact with each other as they wish, I certainly give them specific direction and use their names to do so. So instead of just placing them together and saying ok now act natural, I EXPLAIN to them exactly what I'm looking for!! I use their names explaining what body part needs to be moved, where they should be looking and HOW they should be interacting. And if my second shooter or husband is there I'll even SHOW them exactly what I'm looking for! But let's be real for a second, this part can be hard. It can be hard to give specific and detailed instructions to your clients, it takes thought and coordination!! Which brings me to point number three...

3. Don't be afraid to make fun of yourself!

boston public library engagement session boston wedding photographer deborah zoe photography00091.JPG

boston public library engagement session boston wedding photographer deborah zoe photography00091.JPG

As I'm giving direction to my clients and using their names and adjusting my settings I can stumble. I may jumble my words or do things like mix my clients names together (oh heeyy Billiam!), which I am notorious at doing;). My clients might not understand what I'm asking them to do and they may become confused. But instead of being embarrassed or flustered I turn it into an opportunity to make fun of myself, to get my clients to laugh, to build our relationship further and to capture natural smiles!4. Be confident!

As the photographer it is my job to be the leader of my clients. I MUST be confident in myself as I stand behind the camera. Of course there will be times when I stumble or make mistakes but it is so incredibly important that I don't allow anything to make me flustered. It takes confidence in myself and in my abilities to garner confidence in my clients. The more comfortable and confident I am, naturally the more confident and comfortable my clients will be. Your confidence is what can make or break a session and could be the difference between an amazing session and a mediocre one.

5. Praise your clients.

deborah zoe photography boston engagement session hometown engagement session00031.JPG

deborah zoe photography boston engagement session hometown engagement session00031.JPG

I'm known to squeal ALOT during an engagement session or a wedding day. I'm not afraid to tell my clients when they do something that I love!! I tell them how adorable they are, how cute they are being and if I like what I see. This praise and encouragement goes a long way to instill confidence in my clients. It's important to give them feedback and to let them know how fabulous they are!As I move through a portrait session whether it is during an engagement session or a wedding day I am confidently communicating to my clients. I'm using their names, giving them specific direction and HAVING FUN!! At the end of the day I want each of my couples to have an amazing experience and to leave our time together feeling encouraged and excited!!

Michael & Kristyn Engaged

MIT engagement session boston wedding photographer deborah zoe photography MIT wedding0014.JPG

A MIT Cambridge Engagement

If there is one trait that I have noticed between all my Brides is that they LOVE to giggle. Good thing because I love to laugh too. And it certainly makes my job SO.MUCH.FUN when we get to enjoy our time together. So it didn't come as any surprise to me that Michael and Kristyn spent most of their engagement session giggling and laughing together. How adorable!!

These two met while undergrads at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (hello smarties!!), and they still work there today!! As we waited for Kristyn to join us, Michael told us a little bit about the history of MIT and the "hacks" students have played on campus, quite hilarious! Michael and Kristyn are proud of their alma mater and it certainly means something very special to them!! (I might be a little biased too, as it's my husband's alma mater :-P)

We spent the afternoon together enjoying the WARM WARM weather and exploring the LARGE and sprawling campus. After a quick outfit change the ring pops came out and if these two weren't having a good enough time already, it was like an all out giggle fest as I tried to pose them with their pops. I mean Michael proposed using a ring pop, we had to include them right?! ;)

Mini Makeover

Website Re-Desgin

Last year after my blog re-design I felt a greater sense of what my brand was becoming. Or rather it felt like the pieces were finally falling together to create the look and feel that I had always envisioned. But after the blog launch my website and blog seemed to be working against each other. They didn't quite "fit" together even though both alone were amazing designs. So back to the drawing board I went with my designer, Tara of Stupendous Design, to rethink how we could make the blog and website more cohesive.

We started with Showit, my website platform and began to play around. That's the AMAZING thing about Showit. I can go in and make a million different changes any which way I like. It's also my downfall as I had started to make changes and became to overwhelmed I had to call Tara into help. Luckily she was on board and taking inspiration from the blog began a new draft.

Things went VERY quickly from there and we had the foundation of a new website design in just days. Part of the redesign however included me rethinking ALL content that was currently on my website. I had a VERY specific goal in mind when choosing images, words and graphics for the site and I'm so pleased I gave myself those parameters. I LOVE the new look, the cohesive feel and the message I send to any one who visits the site!! It took me a while but it was well worth the hard work!!

So that brings us to today, a mini website makeover reveal!! Please check out the new design and let me know what you think! I'd love to hear your feedback!! I can't wait to share the site with new visitors!! Happy Wednesday everyone!!

The Power of Collaboration

misselwood at endicott college boston wedding photography deborah zoe photography whim events0001.JPG

Behind The Scenes of A Styled Shoot

This past winter I had the opportunity to attend an online workshop hosted by some amazing ladies, Lara and Emily, from Making Brands Happen. The workshop was titled Making Things Happen 2013 and the primary focus was to inspire the attendees to get organized and get things HAPPENING in 2013.

Part of that workshop involved a ten minute period or so where we could make one BIG thing happen. And I'm not sure why, but I felt on my heart to reach out to friend and fellow photographer, Kendra, of Summer Street Photography. Perhaps I thought because she was taking the course too that I wouldn't sound so crazy. Whatever the reason I send a quick email and held my breath.

Kendra, much to my surprise, emailed me back IMMEDIATELY excited about the idea I had proposed and we almost instantaneously began to plan. Our desire was to create a styled shoot, but not just ANY styled shoot. We wanted a shoot that had depth and meaning and purpose. Our purpose being to celebrate all the beauty of the Quintessential New England Wedding. (Which I'll get more into later when I share images next week!)

I knew that two heads were better than one and I loved the idea of two professionals working alongside one another. So TOGETHER we pooled our resources and brought together an amazing team of vendors, each who were masters in their fields. We explained to them our vision for the project and they all immediately jumped on board. We knew we were on to something.

On Sunday this project came to fruition. All of the planning, organizing, dreaming and preparing came together. What started as a small idea, inspired by an online workshop, became a reality. And what made this day particularly special for me was that we all worked together to see a goal come to life.

Kendra and I in all aspects could be seen as competitors. Why would I dare reach out to local photographer to work on a styled shoot together? Why would I possibly want to share MY resources with her and vice versa. Why let her in on this little idea of mine? Because at the end of the day I truly believe that Kendra and I (and our industry as a whole) are better together than we are apart. Do we both shoot weddings in New England? Yes. But together we can grow our businesses and our talents as photographers FAR more than we could ever do alone.

I'm so thankful for the team we worked with who saw this vision and latched on it. Yes the day was about pretty pictures and dresses and stationary. But it was also about so much more. It was about teamwork, collaboration, and building each other up to be better than we were before. I think that is what made this shoot so special and why I couldn't be more proud of the team.

I am going to challenge you to think outside the box. I am going to challenge you to stretch yourself. I am going to challenge you to reach out to another industry peer. If there is anything that I have learned through this whole process it's that two are better than one. And together we can help to make each other and our businesses stronger! I truly hope I'll have more opportunities to work with other industry peers like this in the future!

I promise to share more pretty images soon (PLUS THERE'S AN AMAZING VIDEO TO COME!!) but for now I'll share a view behind the scenes images of the fun we had. What an awesome way to start my maternity leave!! Thanks to everyone who was involved!!

April Self Portrait

As I sit here to write this post our little one is kicking me ferociously, as he does most of the time I sit down to work. I can only imagine what he'll be like when he's out. Squirmy? Wiggly? More like an adorable distraction.

I'll be recapping more on the whole pregnancy experience later this month so for now I'll keep it short and sweet. I simply cannot believe that we have reached our due month. Where have the last nine months gone? I used to feel like pregnancies took forever and now I realize that they are just the blink of an eye.

Typically each month I have lots of goals for my personal life as well as my business life. But this month I only have one goal:

- Deliver a happy, healthy and strong baby boy. Yes, I have lots of business work that needs to be completed, I have Big List goals and dreams that I am working on, and there are lots of things that need to be taken care of around the house. But my number one priority this month is our little man. It's somewhat hard to think about as someone who works hard and has dedicated the last three years of her life to her business. But soon there is going to be another baby in my life and he'll need just as much, if not more, attention, love and care. I am determined to nurture my business and my growing baby and I am equally determined to create boundaries in my life so that I can do both WELL. So here we are. The last self portrait I'll take pregnant. So exciting, terrifying, amazing, and wonderful all at the same time! Here's to a new adventure, motherhood!

Little Baby Parker

baby boy farm nursery deborah zoe photography boston wedding photographer0016.JPG

A Farm Themed Nursery

Blame it on Pottery Barn, but as soon as I saw this toy I knew exactly what I wanted to do for our little guy's room! I'll admit when we first found out that we were having a boy I was a little sad. Ok, a lot of sad. BUT thankfully my heart has been changed and I simply cannot wait to be a Mom to a little boy!! Part of my disappointment came when I realized that the next 20 years or MORE of my life will be filled with the color blue. And I unfortunately REALLY DON'T LIKE BLUE!! (Does it come as any surprise to you that I love the color pink? Probably not as my business is entirely branded around that color!) So thinking about all the blue in my life, we'll it got my all depressed.

That is until I saw the new line at Pottery Barn. A whole line of linens and developmental toys based on primary colors!! Happy, bright, primary colors!! I knew RIGHT away that was exactly what I wanted for his room!! I mean it just made me happy every time I walked into Pottery Barn and I knew that the same effect would happen every time I walked into his room. (And it has!) I simply love the bright pops of red, yellow, green, orange (and yes, a little blue)!

It also makes me sentimental to think about our little baby being surrounded by farm animals and tractors. Dave's family owns an apple orchid/farm and Dave grew up playing and working there. It's a big part of his childhood and I'm excited to share that with our little guy!

So, yes the nursery is farm themed, my mom referred to is at gingham farm and it's kind of stuck!! She even planned an entire shower around that theme, complete with a barn yard cake!! I was even able to incorporate some of the decorations into his room!

Ok, without further delay here is Little Baby Parker's nursery!! I hope you love it as much as I do!!

Mitch & Claudia Engaged

A Boston Public Library Engagement Session

For part of their first date Mitch and Claudia escaped into the Boston Public Library to avoid the frigid Boston weather. Four years later here they were again where it all began (escaping the frigid Boston weather ;)). This time they were here to celebrate their engagement and upcoming wedding, what a difference four years make!!

I don't think there could be a more adorable couple. Claudia, whose smile could light up a room and Mitch, with a carefree take on life, compliment each other perfectly. I loved watching as they two melted into each other's arms and giggled as they rubbed their noses together. Suddenly the frigid Boston weather wasn't so frigid!

A York Maine Wedding

Good morning friends!! Today I have a lovely summer wedding album to share!! Jason and Amanda came to me a few months ago wishing to create a wedding album. She had read several of my posts on why I absolutely LOVE albums and decided that was exactly what they needed to help remember their special day!!

They went big (go big or go home right?!) and selected the Deluxe Album which includes 40 pages, an upgraded cover with an image and imprinting all bound together with lovely soft leather!! I thought I'd share their album in it's entirety so that you can see exactly what "fits" into a 40 page album. And though there is nothing to give scale to the album here, it's a 12x12 inch square which opens up to a 12x20 rectangle... it's big and guys this thing is HEAVY!! What a beautiful way to remember your wedding day!!

The Crompton Family

Meet Little Anderson

In the blink of an eye your entire life can change. In the blink of an eye little baby Anderson was born and changed Brian and Lisa's life forever. Suddenly their family went from two to three overnight and their hearts would never be the same.

I've had the honor to walk with Brian and Lisa through their engagement, marriage, pregnancy and now life with a newborn, all through photographs. It's amazing how a couple can transform so quickly. From planning for a wedding to planning a nursery. It's been wonderful to watch as Brian and Lisa have made the transition (very gracefully I might add!) from a unit of two to a unit of three. And how big their hearts have grown, filled with love for this precious little man. Adorable little Anderson. Who poops and pees like a champ and races his legs like his mom and dad. Who doesn't mind being a little cold but hates a wet diaper. Little Baby Anderson, a perfect mix of Brian and Lisa.

I'm so grateful to be a part of all this, to have clients turned friends, to experience the joys of life together and to be able to capture that through images. Thank you Brian and Lisa for inviting me into your life (and giving me an excuse to play with your adorable babe;))! Ok, enough talk, onto the adorable baby. Everyone, meet Anderson!
