Travelouge : East Coast Road Trip

east coast road trip deborah zoe photography new england wedding photographer business road trip 0043.JPG

If you've been following along with the blog over this summer you know that our little family of three had been planning a summer vacation road trip down the East Coast. Well it's hard to believe that trip has come and gone!! We had a great time exploring this beautiful country and though it wasn't always rainbows and kittens (read how we survived 1500 miles with a toddler here;)) we left our time in the car with some amazing family memories!!

The reason WHY we headed down to Virginia was two fold. First we were itching for a vacation together and well, another trip to Disney was out of the question;);). Second, I was presented with an opportunity for business growth...a coaching session with friend and fellow photographer, Katelyn James!! It was an amazing time and I'm so excited to share all that we chatted about soon. For today I wanted to share some adorable pictures of our time together as a family.

Man, I just love traveling with these two. It's so easy and smooth, Dave and I travel very much the same. Have you ever tried to travel with someone who has a different travel style than you? Terrible. We've been traveling so much together as a couple and NOW as a family of three that we've got a pretty good routine down. Grab baby, strap him down, pray. Haha, just kidding. Sorta;).

We decided to split up our trips into four different parts in order to not only make the trip more manageable but also allow out opportunities to explore the places we were visiting. It just so happened that our first stop landed near Hershey, Pennsylvania. I had visions of a town made of chocolate and while my taste buds were sadly disappointed we had fun exploring the history of this sweet place. Ahh, see what I did there?;)

I think any good blog post should start with this sweet boys sleeping face. Ahhh, heart melt. Gettin' our learn on at the Hershey Museum. A tip to the wise skip this and stick to the free and kid friendly tour at the Hershey Chocolate World. The picture below is for my Mom...yes Mom the lampposts are Hershey kisses;)!!No we didn't buy that outrageous sized chocolate bar, just holding it up for reference. It's a Jonathan sized candy bar!!The next day we headed to Gettysburg. In all honesty I was doing this just for the hubs, I mean a really old battlefield? How could THAT be interesting? Much to my surprise I left our time at Gettysburg inspired and humbled. I actually want an excuse to go back!!Dave's wish list at Gettysburg was Little Round Top. This was the view of the battlefield below. The ground is COVERED in monuments dedicated to the many men to who lost their lives there... intimidating.Right in the middle of the battlefield, houses were scattered about. I tried to imagine what that would have been like. Pennsylvania and all it's charm.Like I posted yesterday on Instagram, Jonathan's hair has a life of it's own. I couldn't help get this perspective as he tugged at my leg. Now in Virginia we decided to make a stop at Shenandoah National Park, a beautiful spot!!After our time in the mountains and quick stop at Charlottesville we headed into Carytown, a cute little spot in Richmond. Reminded me a LOT of Congress Street in Austin. This is me about to devour a delicious lemon cupcake from Carytown Cupcakes:)!!The next day we made a stop at Historic Tredegar for the hubs, it was pretty cool!Directly across the street is the James River, it was QUITE impressive. Our next stop in our little trip was the BEACH. It just so happened that our trip coincided with a stateside trip of some of our good friends, friends we have not had a chance to see in years!! (Due to the face they live abroad) We had an amazing afternoon playing in the sand, riding waves and wishing that the world was just a little bit smaller...Enjoying the waves!!The babes... would you believe that these two are only like a month a part? Jonathan is a beast...A hop skip and a jump then suddenly we were in Brooklyn, the last stop on our trip. We were hosted by our dear friends Courtney and Dave and though we only got to see them for less than a 24 hour period, I'm so grateful for their hospitality!! Before leaving we decided to take a walk around the Brooklyn Bridge Park so Jonathan could see part of the Manhattan skyline.I love this park...it has such a family vibe combined with sweeping views of the city. Side note, in al the years I've been visiting Courtney in Brooklyn AND the countless times I've visited the city before, I've never been on the Brooklyn Bridge! One of my favorite pics of the trip, love these two!!There it is, vacation come and gone. But what a great vacation it was!! I'm always kinda depressed after a vacation, but Dave always puts it in the right perspective. There are great things in store for us this fall, as a family and as a business. While vacation may be over, there's so much to look forward too!! Bring it on fall!!

Quick side note, I would LOVE to visit each of these places again and photograph a couple or two... know anyone getting married or celebrating an anniversary or engagement?! I'd love to connect!!

Travelogue : How To Survive 1500 Miles With A Toddler

image001.png

Last week we traveled a total of 1581 miles (though this is a rough estimate, pretty sure it was a lot more!) We packed up our family of three and headed on a mini road trip down the East Coast. I've taken this route many times before. To see friends in NYC, family in Pennsylvania, once as freshman in college for a trip to the Outer Banks and numerous times down to D.C. to see our best friends. I was sure that there was nothing on this trip that would capture my interest, I mean it's just been done before!

Well here's the thing. This time we were traveling with Jonathan, all of this was new to HIM. In total he visited six new states and had LOTS of new experiences, like seeing the Manhattan skyline for the first time or basking in the Virginia sunshine. (I'll be honest here and say that all he really cared about were the new bird friends he made but a Mom can dream right?!) One of the beautiful things of being a parent is watching as your child experiences the world for the first time. It was pretty amazing to share with Jonathan this beautiful country, see some new things ourselves and build memories together. So how does one travel to eight different states and over 1500 miles with a toddler in toe... and survive?! Lots of patience, lots of tickles and lots of food. It was an experience to say the least and for the most part we have to applaud our little trooper who rarely complained, even when being stuck in the car for over six hours at one point. We traveled a lot, we saw a lot and we slept a little. I'm kinda tired just looking at this map...

Here are a few things I learned a long the way :

1. New Toys. This tip is all in thanks to my bestie Tricia, who has given me MUCH Mommy wisdom over the years. Before every trip she buys her kiddos a new toy. Nothing big or fancy, just something new, a special treat for them to enjoy on the trip. We've taken this approach and adapted it just slightly. We'll buy Jonathan a new toy (small and practical) before the trip and also introduce OLD toys that he hasn't played with in a while. For the most part this will entertain him for a while, provides a few giggles and gives me time to brainstorm how to keep him entertained next;).

2. Spacing. On our trip we never went any distance that was longer than five hours or so. That seemed to be Jonathan's limit and quite frankly, ours too. I'm so glad we broke up the trip this way. Not only did we get to see more of the various stops along the way, it gave us opportunities to stretch our legs, run around with Jonathan and explore the world around us. Now, if we could only have predicted all the CONSTRUCTION along the way...

3. Food. Our little boy is a BEAST. He's all muscle. In fact he's in the 97% percentile for height and weight and eats everything in sight. He's a non stop eating machine. In every day life it's pretty adorable but on a road trip when your options for food are well, less than desirable, it can be quite the challenge. We decided to pack a cooler and keep it fresh with ice and various things that our babe loves. Apple sauce, yogurt, milk. I also kept another bag close by with dry foods like cookies, food pouches, and wafters. Keeping Jonathan distracted with food was a HUGE help in insuring that he was happy and well nourished.

4. Nap Time. If we could manage, we tried our best to keep Jonathan up until we got into the car. It didn't work every time but for the most part, if we played our cards right, we could get Jonathan to nap in the car, giving us grown ups some much needed down time to zone out the car window;):). We'd make sure to keep him active, running around throughout the day so that, fingers crossed, he might sleep in the car on the way back!! Scheduling when we would be in the car around his nap time was a lifesaver on this trip!

varoadtrip.jpg
varoadtrip.jpg

5. Do it Together. I'll keep it real. There was a lot of screaming too. Lots of food throwing. Lots of toy throwing. Jonathan might have even chewed through a board book at one point....(Dave and I are still impressed at this feat of bruteness!) But these were the moments that I just had to let it be. It was bound to happen on a trip this far and when those moments came, I would take a deep breath and look at Dave, who helped me to keep it together. It truly was a partnership traveling with Jonathan, keeping him happy, safe and entertained. I don't know how someone could do this on their own, I certainly couldn't!! Dave was the glue that held the three of together!!Side note, speaking of the hubs, Dave was my rock throughout the whole trip. I couldn't be more thankful to him for driving the WHOLE way (he insisted!) and using his vacation time to explore with our family while giving me time to grow my business. Man, that guy is the best.

I know these are just a few simple tricks BUT I hope that maybe a tip or two was helpful to at least ONE person!! And I hope that you're encouraged to know traveling doesn't stop after baby!! It might look slightly different (read: a car covered in mushy peas...) but still the adventures go on!! The best part is that now you get to experience through the fresh eyes of a little one, a truly beautiful thing to witness. We have a lot of traveling to do together as a family and I'm pretty darn excited to see more of this world with my two favorite boys!!

If you have any questions about traveling with a toddler feel free to email me at deborah@deborahzoephoto.com or leave a comment below!! Happy Traveling!! I'll be recapping more of our trip tomorrow so don't forget to stop by!!

Happy Anniversary : Jon & Melissa

Over the weekend Jon and Melissa celebrated their First Anniversary!! I always get so excited when these dates roll around. I remember exactly how I felt that first anniversary. I was overwhelmed with a sense of accomplishment and incredibly excited for what the future held for me and my new hubby. I can only imagine what my couples are feeling when they near this important date and I hope that feel the same sense of pride and joy over what they have achieved together!

That's why I love these anniversary posts so much. In their own words, each couple has the opportunity to express just what this past year has meant to them. I hope that it not only leaves them happy after reminiscing over all the beautiful memories they shared together but with a sense of excitement of the future. Year one is simply that, one. There are SO many years of life to be shared together and to me, that is something to celebrate!!

A Vineyard Anniversary Session at Mill River Winery

mill river winery north shore wedding photographer deborah zoe photography anniversary winery 0077.JPG

Over the years I've been photographing more and more anniversary sessions and I have to say I really like this trend! So often we dedicate important milestones in our life to images like weddings and babies. But I truly believe that life is worth documenting at every step of the way, not just in the big things. Your love doesn't just end on the wedding day, it grows and matures, changes and deepens with time, I think that is worth honoring!! Anniversary sessions are the perfect way to do that, hey I speak from experience!! Our own anniversary session remains one of my fondest memories from our eight years together!!

So that brings me to Matt and Meg. These two love birds met in college, fell in love and have been married for five years now. In these past five years they have experienced quite a lot together. One of the biggest being the purchase and renovation of their sweet and quintessentially New England craftsman style cape. They even have a blog dedicated to all their house adventures, 18 Preston. They truly are a team in every sense of the word, balancing each other perfectly. They love to be outdoors, staying active and tackling home projects together. Everything they love in life they share with each other, a reflection of their deep friendship.

One of the things that they love most is wine and visiting the vineyards in Napa and Sonoma valley. Meg is always quite crafty and loves DIY projects and good food. So when their fifth wedding anniversary rolled around they both knew exactly how they wanted to celebrate : at a vineyard with some delicious food. And guess what? They invited me along to capture it all!

We met at Mill River Winery, a charming new winery on the North Shore. The day was met with very unpredictable weather, bright and sunny then suddenly cloudy and rainy. And though we had to duck inside to escape one nasty thundercloud, the weather managed to hold off long enough so we could capture some beautiful photos together.

A Salem Waterfront Family Session

A Salem Waterfront Portrait Session

I've known Danielle since I was a freshman in college. Our husbands we're roommates. In fact that's how I met Dave! (So thanks D!) We would hang out, double date and spend entirely too much time hanging out with with these "boys";). Many of my college memories include this sweet friend of mine.

8 years ago we both got married. Little did we know what married and life held in store for us over the next several years. And in these past years Chris and Danielle have certainly seen their share of adventures. They've church planted, lived abroad, welcomed their first child into the world (ABROAD!) and now are soaking up the sun and good life on the west coast. They make a great team, are raising one sweet boy and taking on life together.

While on vacation back to the east coast this past week, Danielle and Chris wanted to celebrate their eighth wedding anniversary with a family session. They picked Salem, the city where they said "I Do" eight years ago! We spent a fun afternoon chasing their sweet boy up, down and all around while sneaking in a few moments for just the two of them. Here are a few of my favorites, enjoy this darling family!!

Reunited

A Week With Amy

It's August!! We've had a busy few weeks at our house, starting with a visit from one of my best friends!! We've enjoyed lounging on the beach, playing tourist in the city and savoring lots of Jonathan hugs. It's been amazing having her around and I'm going to be very, very, very, sad to see her go. But following her visit we're off once again! If you haven't been around the blog in a while then you missed our announcement of some travel this August. We'll be visiting several states with limited availability for portrait sessions along the way! If you're interested in scheduling a session, email me today!!

Today I'm keeping this post short and sweet! Enjoy a few sneaks into the fun things we've been up to this week including throwing some tea into the Boston harbor, taste testing some Mexican style chocolate and enjoying the best crepes and coffee in Boston! Happy Tuesday every one!

Summer Family Session in Boston

boston family portraits castle island deborah zoe photography new england 0003.JPG

I don't advertise that I photograph family sessions, because I don't often. But every once in a while I can't pass up the chance to connect with past clients and celebrate with them as their family grows. Last week I had the pleasure of spending the evening with Ben, Kristen and their adorable baby boy, who just turned one! The last time I saw these two was at their stunning Vermont wedding several years ago. I connected with Ben last year to create a surprise wedding album for Kristen when we chatted about a family session together to celebrate the newest addition to their family, Baby O.

Product Highlight | Signature Album

emma and paul wedding album boston wedding deborah zoe photography0001.JPG

I'm sure by now you are quite familiar with how important I believe weddings albums are. One of my favorite stories comes from a past client who had ordered their album several years after their wedding day. The day it was delivered they were sent into the hospital to welcome their first baby. After a safe delivery they sent me a picture that I will cherish always. There they were sharing their wedding album in the hospital with their newborn son. Truly, a wedding album is more than just a collection of images arranged on a page. An album is a family heirloom, a way to share with generations to come just how it all began : with love.

Speaking of albums, Emma and Paul were so excited to start the process, Emma couldn't wait for the finished product to enjoy with family and friends. Together we collaborated to create a custom design, a true reflection of their day. In the end, the album came together as a perfect representation of their spring wedding in Boston, right down to Emma's choice of grey leather!!

If you're a past or current client and have been considering investing in a professional album, feel free to email me and we can walk through the process together! Your images are not meant to live on a USB or untouched on a computer hard drive. Rather they should be carefully curated and presented in an album to be cherished for years to come, right? RIGHT!

North Shore Doings : Ipswich Clam Box

clam box ipswich north shore doings deborah zoe photography summer traditions0001.JPG

It's been a tradition for my family since I was really young. Every year we head to the same clam shack that we have been going to since, who knows when. Nothing says summer more to me than when we head to the Clam Box. And though I while don't love friend clams, I'll enjoy a strip or too, it's worth it to spend the time with people that we love. We've spent many a milestones as this quaint little "box", in fact it's where we told my parents that we we're pregnant... how was that two years ago?!

We come to the Clam Box once a summer. Our afternoon includes waiting in the infamous long lines (though there were none this pas weekend!), devouring some fried goodness, driving through the darling seaside communities, then heading back into town for some ice cream, my favorite part of the whole thing! I look forward to it every year, made sweeter by the darling boy that we get to share it with!

If you're ever in the North Shore area and are hankering for some friend clams then head to the Clam Box. There are tons of options for fried clams in the area but in my opinion, the Clam Box does it right. It's a quintessential New England tradition and I'm thankful that the experience has become a tradition for our family too!

A Private Estate Wedding in the Heart of Vermont

Do I dare share how long Kristyn and I have known each other? Maybe I'll skip that part and simply say that Kristyn and I first met during our freshman year at Northeastern University. We were both art majors, Kristyn focusing in design while I studied in photography. Over the course of college we transitioned from friends to roommates and met some of the most amazing ladies along the way. This past Sunday we all gathered together to witness as Kristyn married the love of her life, Eric. They stood by her side and I photographed!

I had no doubt that Kristyn would pull together an incredible event, with her background in design and her skills as a baker and business owner I knew that she was going to put together one amazing celebration for her friends and family. As Krista and I pulled up to the sweeping estate our mouths dropped to the ground. The setting was overwhelmingly beautiful. Set in the valley of the foothills of Vermont was this beautiful estate, bustling with activity as everyone got ready. And then came the details, the bright pops of color, the beautiful invitations, the flowers, the decor. Each piece was pulled together effortlessly and created a magical backdrop for Eric and Kristyn's day.

It was a delight to watch as Eric and Kristyn saw one another for the first time on their wedding day. Eric beamed as Kristyn held back tears. Eric swept her off her feet multiple times throughout day, too excited to contain his joy having married his best friend. Eric and Kristyn, thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your epic day. It was a joy to be your photographers and I hope you can relive each precious moment from the day for years to come! And Kris, I'm so happy to call you a friend and to have been there to watch you get married. So much has changed in these past number of years;)), I can't wait to see where life takes you next!!

Happy Anniversary : Michael & Kristyn

Do you remember these two MIT lovebirds?! They were married at the beautiful harborside just over a year ago, can you believe it?! It was a gorgeous summer day and their wedding was simply perfection. I think what I remember most was Kiki's smile (Mike's too!) They never stopped smiling from the moment they started the day to after each guest had left. Two incredibly joyful people who couldn't wait to start the rest of their lives together.

And what a start they've had! With some traveling under their belt, career changes and lots of time spent with family and friend, M&K have had a very full and wonderful first year of marriage!! But enough from me, I'll let these two do all the talking!! Enjoy!!

D -- Happy anniversary! I simply cannot believe that it has been a year since your wedding!! Has time flown by for you too?

a Boston Harborside wedding

a Boston Harborside wedding

M&K -- Time really has flown by! It feels like just yesterday we were scrambling with last minute wedding details for the big day! My memories from the day are incredible, being surrounded by so many friends and family, it was like a little reunion. Now that a year has passed, I can't help but be excited about the future!D -- What is your favorite memory from your wedding day?

M&K -- Kiki says, Definitely the ceremony. It was so intimate and beautiful, the water as our backdrop, surrounded by everyone who loves us and who we love. A good friend and mentor of ours, an MIT professor and housemaster of the dormitory where Mike and I met, officiated the wedding and it meant so much to have someone who knew us as individuals and as a couple marry us. Also, Mike's family is part Mexican, so as part of the ceremony we used a Mexican wedding tradition known as the Mexican coin ceremony. The groom gives the bride 13 gold coins. To make this tradition more individual to us as a couple, MIke surprised me with 13 different "coins" made from different materials. One coin was made out of wood, and sketched on either side was the Long Beach Fire Department emblem, and the NYC Fire Department emblem, to commemorate each of our grandfathers who were firefighters and have now passed.

Mike says, Without a doubt the first look. I don't like being in front of crowds so i was stressed about the ceremony and the first dance. When we did the first look I realized she was there with me and she was the only one that mattered. The rest just kinda flew by.

a Boston Harborside wedding

D -- What has been the best thing that has happened to you as a couple since your wedding last year?

a Boston Harborside wedding

a Boston Harborside wedding

M&K -- Mike is an event planner at MIT and he recently got promoted! He is an official MIT staff member and will be involved in some very exciting projects coming up! I have also been able to really think about what I want for my future career and i have taken steps to move in that direction such as taking a continuing education class at MassArt this summer! On a broader note, Mike and I have continued to surround ourselves with friends and family this past year. With our Boston friends and family, we have made a note to have a family meal every Sunday and it's been an important tradition to us!D -- What have you learned about each other over this past year?

M&K -- Kiki says, Mike is CRAZY (kidding- I already knew that;)) But every day I find out more and more just how creative he is. Not only is he creative in his cooking and cocktail-making, but he always has these amazing ideas floating around in his head!

a Boston Harborside wedding

a Boston Harborside wedding

Mike says, Kiki is really close to her mom and they chat on the phone a lot, but they both get excited and start yelling. I've always thought they were mad at each other - turns out they are both just excited, HA!D -- Traveled anywhere fun?

M&K -- We decided to wait on doing a honeymoon because we'd like to do a big trip...Greece or Italy! About a month after the wedding we took a road trip to Chicago with friends (our first time there, very fun!) and over the winter we drove up to Montreal. This weekend we are going to Portland, Maine to celebrate our one year anniversary...it will be our first time there! Very excited to walk along the water and eat some delicious food.D -- Any tips you can offer newlyweds for their first year of marriage?

Kiki says -- Compromise is so important to any relationship, and a marriage is really a partnership, something my Dad emphasized in his speech during our wedding dinner. It's easy to get upset about the little things, but at the end of the day you have to remember to laugh with one another and love deeply.

Mike says: Enjoy it(I suspect that applies to the rest of the years also;))!Michael and Kristyn, thank you so much for sharing about the adventures and growth you've experienced together as a couple over this first year of marriage!! I can't wait to see where life takes you both next, love you dearly!! Happy Anniversary!!

The Back Bay Office

A New Meeting Space of DZP Clients

Several months ago I was invited by my favorite photo booth company, The Danger Booth (they are amazing friends, go check 'em out!!) to attend a mixer that they were hosting at the delicious Taza Chocolate Factory (their chocolate is to die for!!). I wasn't going to know a soul there except for a few of the lovely Whim Ladies and to say I was nervous is quite an understatement. Event planners, venue coordinators, florist, bakers, some of the best creatives in the industry where gathered in one room. And yes I was shaking.

I was intimidated. COMPLETELY. Faced with a room full of amazingly talented peers made me want to run and hide. But I swallowed every ounce of fear I had, put on the biggest smile I could muster and forced myself to get to know people. And wouldn't know you, it was one of the best nights of the year. I met some amazing wedding friends and learned that being in a room full of people you don't know isn't all that bad, once you step through the door. It was a great night and I'm so thankful to Zac and the Danger Booth team for inviting me along!

Speaking of meeting new friends, Anna of Paper Moss was one of the people I met that night. We chatted for a little while, talking about her recent wedding and the fun things happening for her and Paper Moss. Several days later Anna emailed me about possibly renting out their Back Bay office for client meetings. Talk about perfect timing as I had (THAT WEEK!) begun the search for my own office space on the North Shore.

I love the idea of collaboration and sharing a space with other creatives. Plus a prime location in Boston's Back Bay can't be beat!! After a few emails back and forth I accepted a lease!! I'm so excited to share with clients that I can now take meetings right in the heart of the Back Bay (as well as the North Shore!). It's wonderful to have studio mates, to share a space with other creatives and have a place where I can meet clients that is my own. The past several meetings there have been a dream. It's quiet, it's private, it's intimate and it's everything I have hoped for in the client experience!!

I am SO excited to see where this next year takes us!! I'm so grateful to the ladies at Paper Moss for inviting me in and being such gracious hosts. Each meeting day I come barreling in with my food and wine and meeting essentials. I like to think they keep me around because I share Taza chocolate with them;);)!!

So if you're a potential, current or past client I'd LOVE to meet with you!! Meetings are by appointment only but feel free to email me to set up a time to see the space and chat!! There will be lots of wine, cheese and of course chocolate to enjoy, promise!!

Nothing says friendship like a little wine, cheese and of course CHOCOLATE, am I right?!Many of you have asked about my home office and not to worry I'm still meeting with clients on both the North Shore and the Back Bay. The vision for my home office is to use it as a space to meet with other photographers one on one and of course to be a place for me to escape during the workday, inspired and invigorated!! If you'd like to meet together send me an email and we'll coordinate!!

The Mansion on Turner Hill | Liz and Andy

the mansion on turner hill wedding turner hill deborah zoe photography ipswich wedding classic pink details0101.JPG

When I arrived to the bridal suite at the The Mansion on Turner Hill there was a flurry of activity, ladies in pink robes, two little babes running around and Liz calmly taking it all in. All of her details were gathered together, her dress was meticulously hung with care and their timeline was taped to the wall. Liz had been planning and thinking about this day for years, now here it was, perfectly organized and a dream come true. Β

As Liz carefully put on her gorgeous gown she was surrounded by an amazing group of ladies, all who very clearly cherish their friendship with her. And as the day progressed it became more and more evident just how loved Andy and Liz are by their family and their friends. The sermon recounted stories of their generosity and kindness, of service and friendship. Liz's matron of honor Caroline and Andy's Best Man Chuck used their toasts as a way to honor the couple with stories of childhood and love. And Liz's Dad gave a moving testimony of the importance of marriage, faith and a life built together. I hope that if Liz and Andy only remember one thing from their wedding day, it is just how loved and supported they are. Β

Liz and Andy, thank you so much for having us as a part of your day!! It was so fun to watch as you became Husband and Wife and I hope that you are able to relive each moment of the day for years to come through your images!! Enjoy!!Β

As you might have seen on Facebook and Instagram, Dave and I celebrated our eight year wedding anniversary on Monday. So over the weekend Dave treated me to a date night complete with a few stops along the North Shore. We started the night in Hamilton, the town where we were married and had a delicious meal at the Black Cow. I had never been here before but had heard amazing things and let me tell you the food did not disappoint!! Nothing fancy, just simple and delicious ingredients made for a great meal together.

Afterward we headed to Manchester by the Sea which is where we had our rehearsal dinner! (Are you getting the theme here?) Of course we had to make at stop at Captian Dusty's, a local ice cream stand, before meandering through the park near the water. I was too busy stuffing ice cream in my mouth and enjoying the time with the hubs to take too many pictures, but I did sneak in a picture of the sunset, a beautiful end to our day. Nothing is more New England or North Shore than this. If you're ever in the North Shore area, then a trip to Cape Ann and Manchester are a must. My soul comes alive here, I can't imagine anywhere more perfect (unless we're talking Hawaii or Paris;))!! Enjoy!!

Happy Anniversary : Mitch & Claudia

barn at gibbet hill wedding deborah zoe photography new england wedding photograph0008.JPG

Does anyone else feel like 2013 was just YESTERDAY? I'm still in shock that a year has past since last summer. And after talking to some of my 2013 couples, I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling that way!

The first year of marriage can often fly by. With the whirl of the wedding, the honeymoon, moves, job changes, projects and sometimes babies, it can seem like the first year together is over in the blink of an eye. That's why I love doing these anniversary posts, because it gives couples an opportunity to stop and reflect on what an incredible year they've just experienced together and to share the challenges, lessons and wisdom they've garnered along the way.

You probably remember Mitch & Claudia, who could forget their chic barn wedding at Gibbet Hill last summer. I know I'll never forget how HOT (we're talking record breaking heat here) it was! I'll always remember how Mitch beamed with pride as Claudia walked down the aisle and how loved they were (and are!) by their family who traveled to celebrate from across the world. It was an incredibly special day infused with lots of colorful FUN thanks to Claudia's Venezuelan heritage. I could probably go on and on about these two, but instead I'll let Mitch and Claudia share about their favorite memories from the wedding day and their thoughts after one year of marriage. Happy Anniversary you two!!D -- Happy anniversary! I simply cannot believe that it has been a year since your wedding!! Has time flown by for you too?

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

M&C -- It has most definitely flown by. It feels like it was just yesterday that we were planning all of the wedding details, and then celebrating the big day. We have no idea where this year went!D -- What is your favorite memory from your wedding day?

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

M&C -- The whole day was honestly perfect and we loved all of it so much, well maybe not the 100 degree weather :). But if we had to pick one, Mitch and I both agree our favorite memory is the ceremony. After that we loved dancing and celebrating together with our friends and family!D -- What has been the best thing that has happened to you as a couple since your wedding last year?

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

M&C -- It has overall just been a great year! There is just something very special for us about being married, its hard to explain. Getting married is the best thing that has happened to us! We also moved apartments and Mitch got a new job, both of which have been really fun!D -- What have you learned about each other over this past year?

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

M&C -- We have learned that life will never slow down. It's really important that we make time for each other. Mitch also learned that I lied when I said after marriage I would be more organized, ha;). And I learned that Mitch is still patient and willing to help me be more organized!!D -- Traveled anywhere fun?

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

the Barn at Gibbet Hill wedding

M&C -- For our honeymoon we went to Italy and Greece, which was the the most beautiful trip ever! Then this past June we went to London and Paris which was so much fun! After our honeymoon we thought we wouldn't be doing a big trip for a while but then we started to think about how much we enjoy traveling and how this is the time to do it before starting a family, so we went for it and had a fantastic time!D -- Any tips you can offer newlyweds for their first year of marriage?

M&C -- Enjoy being a newlywed and don't get too overwhelmed trying to plan the rest of your lives. Things will fall into place, or so we hope! Listen to each other and don't get stuck in your routine, make time to have fun together!!

Mitch and Claudia, thank you so much for sharing a little about what your first year of marriage has been like and what it has meant to you. Here's to many more years of learning and lots of adventures together!! Love you two!!

North Shore Doings : Kings Beach Swampscott

deborah zoe photography north shore doings north shore wedding photographer kings beach swampscott0010.JPG

Happy Tuesday everyone!! I hope you were all able to enjoy this glorious weekend we just had. I mean, it was the type of weekend that us New Englanders only DREAM of during the winter and pretty much throughout the entire year. As the saying goes in New England, "If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute." New England is notorious for having unpredictable weather, especially during the summer. But not this weekend. This weekend New England shined in all it's New England-y glory and we certainly made the most of it.

We started the weekend out in New Hampshire with Dave's family. They live on a lake and we spent a most amazing day lounging in the lake, going for a run, fishing and kayaking. Man, it was great. And the fun didn't stop there. When we came home on Sunday Dave suggested that we head out for a picnic and a walk along the water. What has been great about these North Shore Doings posts is that it's an excuse to do really fun things together a a family. I love how on board Dave is with the idea and we've created some wonderful memories together as a family!

On Sunday we headed to Whole Foods to pick up some picnic essentials and were greeted with the coolest surprise ever... an entire field of wildflowers!! Of course we had to stop and take a detour for pictures!! After, we were off to King's Beach with is located on the border of Swampscott and Lynn. More on that below but for now let's take a quick detour to some wild flowers:)....

After we packed up some treats we headed to Kings Beach. I really love this spot on the water, there's a park, sweeping views of the North Shore and the Boston skyline as well as sidewalk space for walking (or running if you prefer)! It was busy on Sunday with folks out enjoying the beautiful sunshine. Just a note, this beach and surrounding harbor area is notorious for an unpleasant smell as the tide goes out. So note for those with sensitive noses, time your visit just right;).Can you see a teeny tiny boston down to the right? To the left is Nahant and Nahant Beach. It probably seems like most of our North Shore Doings as of late have to do with the ocean and well, it's true. Much of the North Shore is situated right on the water and it's an integral part to this areas character and history. Having grown up around the ocean I'm not sure I could live anywhere that didn't have a coast. Funny, as I'm pretty much afraid of all water;)! (Except pools, ya know, because there is nothing that could brush against me and eat my feet there...;);))For those fans of American Hustle this is where Rosalyn has a date with Pete! Fun fact, at our old house they filmed much of the movie just down the street!Ok enough chit chat, time to explore and chase seagulls!!These two... LOVE THEM.That hair, you guys, we have a mini Donald Trump on our hands. Also RED or BLONDE? Please say red;):)!Gotta end with one of my favorite pictures from the adventure!!All in all Kings Beach is a great spot for an afternoon picnic or to relax on the shore. We were going to suggest enjoying a lime rickey's from Lime Rickey's only to discover that it was torn down!! Looks like they are making room for a new restaurant so keep your eyes peeled for what's coming! Swampscott's downtown is just a short walk at the end of the beach and offers restaurants, ice cream and a few shops. Check it out!! Any suggestions for our next adventure?!

A Regatta Place Wedding

deborah zoe photography regatta place wedding ochre court newport wedding 0053.JPG

If there was one word I could use to describe Mark and Marlo's wedding day it would have to be family. From the beginning of the day til the end of the night, they were surrounded by those who love them dearly. Two sets of families coming together to rejoice with Mark and Marlo as they said I DO. Throughout the day there was laughter, there were tears, there was hugs, and kisses and smiles. Mostly there was joy, pure joy. I was so struck by just how much this couple is loved and just how much their families love one another. I couldn't help but think just how lucky Mark and Marlo are to have such amazing people by their side.

Mark and Marlo chose Newport Harbor at the location for their summer wedding and it truly was the PERFECT summer day. And no, I'm not exaggerating, really!! Just one day before Hurricane Arthur had raced up the East Coast bringing with it rain, wind and all sorts of Mother Nature's worst. But on Sunday the sun shined brightly, a warm breeze floated through the air and the ocean was calm and clear. It's a rare treat in New England that we are treated to such a perfect day; I couldn't imagine a better wedding gift for Marlo and Mark.

Marlo and Mark, thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of the day. It was delight to document each moment you shared together and to witness such an incredible outpouring of love from your friends and family. I hope that as you look back on each image you can relive the day, moment by precious moment and remember exactly how you felt as you married your best friend. Enjoy!!

*A huge thank you to Lauren and Kendal for being the best team a girl could ask for and for helping to capture the day so perfectly!!*

I started the day with the girls as they got ready at the beautiful Hydrangea House in downtown Newport. I loved the unique character of this intimate inn!

GA8A6801.jpg

Remember the Bookworm Club?! Gosh it's been SO long since I read a book, let alone reviewed one, that I barely remember what it is like to share a good read with others. If you've been around the blog (hey old blog!) for a while now then you'll remember my return to reading. If you're new here let me share a little back story. Several years ago my soul sista and bestie Tricia, helped to rekindle my love affair with reading through her endless amounts of book recommendations. From riveting novels to fun beach-y reads, Tricia shared with me her love of books and I soon started to fall back in love with reading. It was also around this time that I was just starting my business, so I was immersed in all new business related reading material. All in all I was reading more than I ever had before and loved every single second of it!!

Fast forward a few years, one business and one baby later and it's a rare treat if I can find the time to read a sentence let alone an entire BOOK. But this past weekend I was afford such a luxury when my husband and I escaped to New Hampshire for a few days with family. My book of choice for this trip, Tribes by Seth Godin, recommended to me by several business owners and entrepreneurs.

I've read several of Seth's books before, you can read one of my reviews here. While GOOD they never quite struck a nerve with me, never quite grabbed me and changed me. I had always found his books to be filled with interesting anecdotes but never enough meat or practical advice that I felt could help advance my perspective of my business and the world. These days, with my limited precious time, a book has to capture me within a page or two to ensure that I'll stick with it long enough to finish. And though I was hesitant it would, Tribes did that and a whole lot more.

You guys, I finished this book in a weekend. I couldn't put it down, from start to finish I was transfixed. Godin's approach was magnetic, engaging and completely relevant. His call to action, his presentation, his persuasion had me fired up and ready for change. I hung on ever page of the book, eager to finish one so as to get to the next. I was actually sad when I finished and proclaimed to Dave that I think I should start at the beginning and re-read it just for the pleasure of enjoying it again, I loved it that much.

Maybe it's because I was a Girl Scout and the idea of leadership, preparation and betterment of the world has been engrained into my being. Or perhaps it's because I was reading Godin's words at the right time. Or maybe I was just in a good mood. Whatever the case, something inside of me deeply connected with Godin's message of leadership and community and the call to make things happen today, not tomorrow. Is that a message you need to hear too? Well then, I would highly recommend this book.

All in all I thought this was a great read, perfectly applicable to those in business! If you're looking to add to your business book collection, this should be at the top of your list. AND in keeping with Bookworm Club tradition, I'll be giving a away a copy of the book to one commenter below. To enter, just leave a comment with your favorite business (or beach) read! (Please use your correct email so I can contact you if you win!) The giveaway starts today and ends on July 10, 2014 at 11pm. The winner will be announced on the Facebook page July 12th. Good luck and Happy Reading!!

In an effort to continue to read more I'm challenging myself to devour another book in time for next month... here goes!! Any good recommendations? Leave 'em below!!

How To Reduce Stress On Your Wedding Day

2014-06-30_0002.jpg

I work some amazing couples, some of the sweetest, most down to earth people you will ever meet. And I have to say, some of the most organized and cool, calm, collected types too!! It's always a joy to show up on a wedding day knowing you'll be greeted with happy, joyful people who are excited to get married!!

But let's face it, regardless of how organized or well-dispositioned one might be there is still room to experience stress on the wedding day. Having been a Bride myself and now wedding photographer, I've watched Bride and Grooms over the years taking mental note of what seemed to work...or not work... to enable a couple to enjoy a relatively stress free and FUN wedding day! Here are a few tips that I've learned along the way :

Smile.

Should a photographer really need to say this? Yes, yes I do. Perhaps it's because I'm guilty of this myself but when amidst a flurry of activity it can be easy to feel overwhelmed, smothered and conflicted. Emotions which don't exactly equate to a smile. If you find yourself leaning in this direction, SMILE. Your smile will not only change your attitude, outlook and feelings towards the situation but it will be infectious to those around you. And truly, is there anything more beautiful than a smiling Bride? I think not!

Time.

Oh time, elusive time. If there is one thing that I could recommend to all couples getting married it would be this : always plan for more time than you think you need. A wedding day is a RUSH of activity, people and responsibilities. Even the smallest weddings can still be full and busy. Planning for more time than you think you'll need ensures that even if something runs late, you've planned for it. It gives your vendors opportunity to serve you and provides a buffer for unexpected events like traffic, lost guests or a dress that won't quite bustle. You may not need that extra five minutes here and there but if you do, you'll sure be glad you planned for it!

More than you.

As a Bride or Groom you are the star of the show. After all, you're reason why everyone has gathered from near and far. But even so, a wedding day is not JUST about you. If that sounds counter cultural, well perhaps it is. But hear me out. You share your day with your parents, your grandparents, your siblings, your friends, your loved ones. Each person has given of themselves to participate in some way to your day and each has a vested emotional stake in your wedding. So while they may do things or say things that can cause stress or anxiety, remember that they too are experiencing this day and are flooded with a range of emotions, often filled with pride to see you married. Stop and give them a hug, thank them and tell them how much they mean to you. Not only will it calm your nerves but it will leave a lasting impression and a memory you can both treasure.

Expectations.

It's important to manage your expectations on the wedding day and realize that even though you may have meticulously thought out every detail, something is bound to go "wrong." Wrong is such a harsh word because often times these are the things that create the sweetest kinds of memories. Case in point, while enjoying our First Kiss as a married couple Dave and I apparently exchange a bit of saliva (hey it was like 500 degrees in the church!). When we turned to face our guests a string of spit was connected between us, a string so large it was seen from the balcony and caught on camera! Definitely not something we were planning for and certainly something that could have caused undo stress. But looking back we just laughed and it has become a story that we fondly tell over and over again:) Try your best to roll with the punches, whatever may come your way. You never know, it could become one of your favorite memories!!

If you're a former Bride, what were some of the best tips given to you to avoid the dreaded wedding day stress? What did you learn from experiencing your own wedding that you can share with Bride and Grooms to be? Feel free to share in the comment box, I'd love to hear from you!

The DZP Home Office Reveal

It's party time!! I'm SO excited to reveal the DZP Home Office Makeover with blog readers this morning!! So maybe it's a party of one (plus a fiesty doggy) in the office but just know I'm dancing a little "I no longer have to paint this room!" dance!! I'm pretending you're partying along too:)!!

As you may remember, in our old home I had quite the unique set up for a home office. Being that our second floor was lofted I had almost two separate spaces, an office and a meeting area. For the first few years of my business I brought clients upstairs to meet, enjoy cupcakes and chat. It loved that personal side of my business and I'll have to admit sometimes I miss that!

Fast forward to last year when we kinda, sorta, at the last minute, decided to sell our beloved home and move closer to family. Everything happened in under two months and suddenly I found myself in a new house and a MUCH smaller office. I didn't know what to do with the space and so I did nothing. For several months I just lived and worked in the space, learning the ins and outs of what worked and what didn't. I wanted the future office to be a reflection of me, my brand and the things that make me so passionate about what I do. I wanted it to be a space that inspired me daily, refreshed my soul and pushed me forward. Designing and dreaming about a space like that takes time. So, this impatient girl begrudgingly waited to let those things unfold.

Way back in March I started this journey. The first step was to sell my beloved Pottery Barn desk for an upgraded WHITE version (swoon!). I battled over shades of grey and documented the agonizing process on Instagram. I carefully selected images, frames, accents, rugs, pillows and decor for the space, making mistakes along the way and learning a whole lot!! I spent money on the pieces that mattered most to me (and that would get used every day) and repurposed others from my old office.

When it came time to photograph the space I was delighted. It felt complete and it felt entirely like ME. For a girl that can be incredibly indecisive, that's no easy feat but with a lot of patience, thought and a little elbow grease, it CAN be accomplished!! Today this space is one of my favorite spots in the house and it truly is a respite for me on work days. I love it here!

To everyone who walked with me through this process, thank you so much!! Your objective feedback was incredibly helpful and gave me much needed feedback!! And to my hubster, thank you for giving me a room in the house that is all my own, for building shelves for me, hanging canvases, encouraging me and supporting me through not only this makeover, but business ownership too!!

Chaise : Urban OutiffersI became a little obssessed with Rifle's wedding illustrations...they are just too perfect!!This clock has been with me for a LONG time and it fits perfectly in the new space!!There she is, my first camera. I've been not so secretly dying to get some film and start playing with her again:)Right by my desk is a small frame that holds one of my favorite pictures of Jonathan and I. It's a reminder to me, especially on those hard days as an artist and business owner, that my purpose is not in my job. I do what I love so I can serve my clients well but most importantly serve and love my family. When choosing pieces for the new desk, I decided to add a secondary work station for interns, possibly a future studio manager as well as a space for Dave to use when he works from home. I also added LOTS of filing and storage space!!In addition to all the pretty pictures I wanted to include a picture of Dave and I on our wedding day:)The cork board serves as a piece of inspiration, a place where I can display and be reminded of the things that I love. Here are just a few snippets. A new office requirement? Fresh flowers of course!!There she is, the new office...what do you think?!And a little before action....here is what the room looked like when we moved in:). Now for the giveaway!!
