So when I received this new album in the mail I was elated...because this album is LARGE AND IN CHARGE!! It's the 12x12 Deluxe Album and features over 40 pages of beautiful images! (By the time this shoot was done my arms were jello;)). I thought by modeling the album you'd get a better sense of just how big this baby is! Oh I just can't get enough!Remember this adorable couple? Who could forget their amazing New Hampshire farm wedding?!When you open the book, you are welcomed to 24 inches of wedding day goodness. An impressive way to display your images and share your wedding day!I know I've said it before, but wedding albums are important. Images are never meant to stay online or in a hard drive. Elegantly displayed in an album, your images suddenly come alive telling the story of your wedding day. Albums are an investment in preserving your wedding day for years to come! Again, the pages lay flat so you're not distracted by any unruly pages or large gutter. All you see is big, beautiful images!I love how clean and beautiful full panoramic spreads look!Whether closed or open, this album is impressive from all angles!I truly didn't think I could love my album company more.... but then... then they launched a new website chock full of new content including this amazing video! Check out how Madera creates hand crafted albums from start to finish... I think you'll fall in love with them too! Enjoy!

Vendor Highlight

Meet Long Haul Films

It's a much overdo Vendor Highlight today on the blog!! And I have to say I'm pretty excited about this lovely couple you're about to meet! I first met Melissa and Tom earlier this year as I started to plan my promo video! I immediately fell in love with their urban chic vibe and knew they were the perfect fit for the project! (You can read more about that here!).

Together, married couple Melissa and Tom make up the team that is Long Haul Films. They create the most beautiful and REAL wedding films and I'm always blown away by their work! They travel extensively throughout New England and are a highly sought after duo. They make weddings into a work of art and I simply adore all that they do! So naturally, I had to share them with you! If you want to see more of their amazing work, click here. And to follow along with them make sure to check out their blog! Here we go! Let's meet Melissa and Tom!

Deb -- Hi guys!! Thanks so much for taking some time to spend with us on the blog today!! How about we start with a little bit about the two of you:)

M&T -- We're Tom and Melissa, the husband and wife team behind Long Haul Films, a Boston-based production company that makes wedding, documentary and commercial films. Melissa is a Boston native and Tom comes from the north of England. We met in London and moved to Boston after we got married a few years ago. Yes, Tom will bring his English accent to your wedding!

Melissa is Long Haul Films' Creative Director and before launching the business, worked in international advertising in London, Europe and the Middle East. Tom is Long Haul Films' chief Cinematographer and Editor with a passion for visual storytelling developed at the University of York, where he founded the University of York Filmmaking Society, and a Master's program in Feature Film at the prestigious Goldsmiths College, London.

Deb --You have a pretty diverse portfolio, how did you get started in weddings?

M&T -- Film and filmmaking has been a shared passion from the moment we met. Our first creative collaboration was a documentary project about the meaning of modern marriage. It led to an opportunity to film a wedding, which we did as a favor to a friend. It turned out to be a bigger favor to us because we instantly fell in love with making wedding films! From the beginning, we knew we wanted to make wedding films that tell the interesting and unique stories of the couples we work with in a beautiful and cinematic style.

Deb -- What is one thing that you just love about your job?

M&T -- Hmmmm, only one thing? If we have to pick one, it's that we have the privilege of capturing the best day of our clients' lives and turning it into a film that they can watch and enjoy for years to come. It's a wonderful, rewarding thing to do for a living and it makes us feel genuinely thrilled when we've made our clients happy.

Deb -- As a Bride starts to plan her wedding, why would you encourage her to hire a videographer?

M&T -- The couples we work with invest so much time, energy, passion and money into making their wedding day a celebration of their relationship and reflection of themselves. After weeks, months and sometimes years of planning the day passes by so quickly! No matter how hard you try to see everyone and do everything, there are parts of your wedding that will go by in a blur. Having a wedding film is the perfect way to revisit favorite memories, and also a chance to experience moments you might have missed the first time around. There aren't many days in life that are like your wedding day -- when all the people who love you come together to celebrate you and your relationship. Hiring a talented videographer allows you to enjoy that experience again and again; to share your wedding with those who might not be able to join you on the day; to show your children and grandchildren down the line.

Deb -- What is one thing you wish Brides knew in regards to wedding videography?

M&T --There's a lingering stereotype that wedding videographers use giant cameras, overwhelming spotlights and get in the way of guests. In fact, we're able to capture beautiful, high definition footage using the same small DSLR cameras that most photographers use and minimal artificial lighting. Most of our clients comment on how unobtrusive we are and once the day gets going, they completely forget we're filming. That's a big compliment to us-- if our clients and their guests can forget we're there, the footage we capture will be that much more natural and relaxed.

Deb -- What makes your style different than the average wedding videographer?

M&T -- We believe the couples we work with benefit from having both the male and female perspective go into the making of their wedding film. We each have different strengths which completely complement each other; we notice different important moments and details; and because we're a married couple, we work together naturally and effortlessly. There are still relatively few female videographers out there, and sometimes we call Melissa our "secret weapon"-- she's not only talented behind the camera, but she loves weddings; follows blogs to stay up to date on the latest trends; and truly understands the emotional energy of the day!

Additionally, we believe our experience making documentary and commercial films positively influences the quality of our work, the professionalism of our customer service and the scope of our creativity. This year alone we've made a commercial for Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, a travel film for the Berkshires and a music video for an up and coming band-- not to mention the promotional film we made for Deborah Zoe Photography! Doing this kind of work stretches us creatively and provides us with many ideas and inspirations that we bring to our wedding clients.

Deb -- What is your favorite part of a wedding day?

M&T -- Again we ask... do we have to pick just one part?! There are so many moments we love... and love to capture with our cameras. Seeing the bride when she first gets into her dress and is truly transformed is always a special moment. The look on the groom's face when he first catches sight of his wife-to-be is also incredible and powerful. We love to film great speeches-- Fathers of the Bride are often favorites. And then there's the dance floor-- oh, the dance floor! It's so much fun when we see everyone from age 8 to 80 shaking their thing to LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem. Seriously, make sure your DJ has that song on your wedding playlist because it's always one of the most fun moments!

But maybe most of all, we love those candid, never-could-have-planned-it moments that are so exciting to capture for the wedding film. Like in this trailer for Anne and Andy's wedding which took place on a sweltering August day in a rustic barn in New York. At the end of the night, the bride, Anne, jumped into the pool at the venue-- fully clothed in her Vera Wang dress. What a once-in-a-lifetime moment to capture!

Deb -- What do you love to do when you're not filming weddings?

M&T -- Um, is it sad to say that in our spare time we love making films? We usually have at least one personal film project that we work on in our spare time and it's truly one of our favorite things to do. It's hard to separate us from our cameras and editing equipment. But when we do break away, we love anything to do with the arts-- going to film festivals, galleries, concerts, performances of any kind. We love to travel and take any excuse to jump on a plane and explore somewhere new. We both love taking photos and writing (if we weren't filmmakers I think we'd either be novelists or photographers... or both). And we're also often to be found walking our ridiculously cute little Yorkie around downtown Boston. Yes, sometimes in a sweater. Deb --(and yes, their Yorkie is adorbs!)

Deb -- Anything else you'd like to add before you go?!

M&T -- We'd just like to add that we had so much fun making your promotional film and learning about you. That's another cool part of our job-- we get to know so many amazingly talented, interesting and fun people. Thanks for letting us tell your story, Deborah, and we can't wait to see the next chapter.

Thanks again Melissa and Tom for spending sometime with us on the blog today! Perhaps it's the pregnancy hormones but I started watching some of your films again and immediately started to cry!! Ahh, I just can't get enough!!

If you'd like to reach Melissa and Tom you can reach them at their website Long Haul Films or by emailing Melissa directly at melissa@longhaulfilms.com.

November Self Portrait

2012-11-06_001.jpg

Soooo if I were being completely honest, I didn't really want to do this. It seems like everyone does some sort of self portrait or goals post and I just didn't want to seem like a copy cat. But after some thought I decide to throw my doubts to the side and just do what I wanted!

I've been doing a self portrait blog series since the beginning of the year. It certainly has been a challenge!! And I think I knew it would be. There have been a few months where I "skipped", hey life got really crazy for a while, and other months where I was really proud of the image I created! But as I thought about how I wanted the series to grow (yes I want to keep challenging myself with this!), I thought that there had to be something that kept me interested and invested in doing it over and over each month.

Hence why I decided to add a "goals" portion to portrait post. After what seemed like an insane August and September due to some family emergencies (and a new pregnancy!) I felt like I was just suddenly put off track. My to do lists, which I'm usually great a managing, where suddenly all over the place and I had no idea where I was. Forget about goals for the future, I couldn't keep day to day tasks straight.

So of course I loved the idea of putting my goals and dreams for the future out there in a blog post! First, it would be a place for me to write things down but second, it would be a way to be held accountable for the things I wanted to achieve that month! I mean if it's out there, I have to accomplish it right?! What a great motivator!

So here we go, a first attempt at a goals post. Just in time for the year to end;)!

Personal:

-- November is all sorts of crazy with travel and the holidays so my number one goal is just to enjoy the month and the copious amount of time spent with family and friends!

-- Have an amazing babymoon of sorts with Dave.

-- Continue to clean out the guest room and paint (once we find out the sex of the baby of course!)

-- Start a baby registry (once we find out the sex of the baby!)

-- Get my car fixed and out of the shop.

-- Research about "enhancing" our fireplace in the dining room.

-- Start Christmas shopping! (eepp, is that really here?!)

Business:

-- Make 2-3 "thank you" albums for my favorite venues this year.

-- Plan out Christmas gifts for clients.

-- Create a PASS instructional website for clients.

-- Finalize a travel website for prints of my travel photography.

-- Begin working on a Bridal Welcome packet/booklet for new clients.

-- Update my website with new work and promo video.

Looking ahead:

-- I can't wait to find out the gender of our little baby!! Which we will later this month!

-- I can't wait to spend the holiday's with family! It's my favorite time of year:)

-- I'm really looking forward to shooting the weddings I have for next year and enjoying the experience as a new mom!

-- Cutting down our Christmas tree!! An annual Hammond tradition!

The Art of Balance

tips for pregnant wedding photographers deborah zoe photography deborah zoe blog boston wedding photographer1.jpg

Shooting In The First Trimester

I know, I know. I promised that when I announced my pregnancy that I wouldn't overwhelm the blog with "mommy posts" and I won't. BUT I will make a disclaimer that I am going to talk about some of my experiences here, especially from the perspective of a pregnant working wedding photographer. There are so many woman photographers out there who "struggle" with the idea of incorporating a pregnancy into their business life, and I have to say I was (and sometimes still am) that person. So I want to write, lightly, about this topic in hopes that it will inspire and encourage other woman photographers out there that yes, you can be pregnant, have a baby and still run a successful and thriving business! (With a balanced and realistic approach of course:)). Since I've been asked A LOT about what it was like shooting in the First Trimester, I'll start there.

I found out, or rather got suspicious, that there might be a baby on board when I was shooting Jenny and Joe's wedding back in August. It was a relatively mild summer day but I swear I could have been sweating buckets. The massive Catholic church was cool and air conditioned but I felt like I was being smothered by the humidity (there was none, by the way). I distinctively remember standing at the altar thinking I felt like I might pass out. I was dizzy, overly hot and feeling rather "icky". I ran to my amazing second shooter, who then ran out to the car and brought me some water. I made it through and felt so much better once we were outside. Welcome to shooting in the First Trimester.

Having heard HORROR stories from other woman (mostly things I read online, which by the way, don't do), I was terrified that I would have to run out of a ceremony or reception or that I would forget something incredibly important or I just wouldn't be able to do my job. I'm thankful to say, that for me, this couldn't have been farther from the case. What I did experience was exhaustion, a nauseous stomach and a disappearing appetite. All things that I was able to deal with and still perform my job (and have fun while doing it!)

Here are the tips and tricks that helped me through those "difficult" first three months of pregnancy:

-- Make sure to have a reliable second shooter with you at any wedding you'll be shooting while pregnant (perhaps even thinking about bringing an assistant as well). I know this might seem like common sense, but it's true. Having a reliable team with me during that First Trimester (and into my Second) made every minute of shooting so much better than if I had gone in alone. With pregnancy you cannot control what happens (and really ANYTHING could happen). For my own peace of mind, having someone there was very important. I wanted nothing to interfere with my client's day.

-- Bring snacks. Often as wedding photographers we don't eat. Whether it's missing that lunch time because you're traveling to a wedding or because a venue forgot to feed you, meals are just not a guarantee. And eating while pregnant is so hugely important. While I felt nauseous, I knew I had to keep eating so I kept my Think Tank roller FULL of easily accessible snacks. I'd pop a few in my mouth during the ceremony, the family formals, the cocktail hour, any time that I needed a little pick me up. And they kept my belly and baby happy.

-- Bring water. If there is one thing you should never forget to bring (besides your camera;)) it should be water. I attached a carabiner to my Shootsac and hung a water bottle on it to make sure that I had water on me at all times. Making a baby takes a lot of your energy! Add in a wedding day (and we all know how much energy that takes!) and you've got yourself one tired photographer. Water helped me to feel refreshed, hydrated and energized. It's also a huge requirement of mothers to be to make sure that they drink lots and lots and LOTS of water during the day.

-- Make room for pee breaks. This is where a skilled second photographer comes in. When you're pregnant you pee A LOT. I felt like I was constantly telling my second shooter that I had to pee. I managed to squeeze in breaks in between important events, but in the rare case, that I knew I had my second shooter there to take over as necessary.

-- Listen to your body and take time to rest. I'm a person that likes to go go go. I'll push myself to keep going even if I know I shouldn't. There were a few (VERY FEW) moments during the First Trimester where I might have pushed myself a little bit harder than I should have. It's hard, sometimes when you're not showing, you forget that you're pregnant so it's easy to go faster and harder. But making sure to listen to your body is hugely important, not only for you and your baby, but also for your clients. Rest will enable you to perform your job to the best of your ability. If you're feeling tired or achey, take five minutes to take a deep breath and sit down. It will make the rest of the day that much better.

-- Ginger candies are a must. For me my go to product to fight morning sickness was a little "candy" called Preggie Drops. They helped to instantly take away any nauseous stomach I might have had and helped me refocus on the job at hand. They certainly were a life saver in those early weeks especially right before a ceremony where I knew all my attention would be focused on the couple, not my icky stomach.

-- Be prepared for exhaustion. Fatigue is a HUGE part of the First Trimester. And I don't just mean you feel sleepy. You feel WONKY! I often found myself randomly falling asleep on the couch (I even feel asleep and drooled on our dog!) during those first few months. So keep this in mind while you're shooting. You are going to be VERY tired after a day of shooting. It typically took me a day or two to recover from one wedding. But I knew that this was only for a season of time and so I planned accordingly, not scheduling any shoots or appointments the day after a wedding. I knew full well that I would be asleep on the couch and probably drooling on the dog the following day;).

For me the nauseous symptoms, the exhaustion, the fatigue, all started to wane around nine weeks. By the end of September I found myself feeling "better" and shooting weddings felt "normal" again. Of course a whole host of other symptoms soon arrived (aches, pains, and a growing waistline) but nothing that I felt could drastically interfere with my job. Looking back, I'm very grateful for the experience! It helped me to realize that, with help and proper planning, I CAN DO THIS! It is possible to shoot and work while pregnant and I'm grateful to have been able to continue to do what I love most, SHOOT WEDDINGS!

Here I am shooting Rob and Rachel's wedding at seven weeks pregnant, in a dress, during a double header weekend and STILL HAVING FUN!I will say that every pregnancy is different. My experience could be drastically different than yours. BUT this is what I did to prepare and "survive" those First Trimester symptoms during the first three months of pregnancy and wedding season. It can be done, it's not as horrifying as you might imagine and with a little planning and patience, it can actually be a really enjoyable time! If you have any questions or want to continue the conversation, leave a message in the comment section below or shoot me an email! I'd love to hear from you!

What A Year!

A Recap of the 2012 Wedding Season

November is here! And I can hardly quite believe it! I love this time of year. The air has turned chilly (but not too cold), the holidays are right around the corner and I don't feel so guilty about listening to my favorite Christmas tunes now;). It also marks the start of a season of reflection, as the wedding year winds down and the office work starts to pick up. The season of dreaming and schemeing and planning is ahead!

This past weekend not only marked the beginning of November but the end of my 2012 wedding season. I couldn't have asked to spend it with a better couple than Jen and Ryan! (More of their adorable wedding headed your way this week!) To celebrate the milestone, Dave and I spent a leisurely Sunday afternoon with an amazing brunch at Tupelo (highly recommended!) and some leave raking (I mostly directed from my comfortable perch on the deck;)).

Looking back on this season, I feel so completely blessed. Blessed to not only have had the opportunity to attend some fabulous weddings and meet some amazing people, but blessed to do what I love. I spent another year running my own business, working from home, growing as an entrepreneur and of course continuing to grow as a photographer. Looking ahead, next year is going to look VERY different (oh hello baby!), but I'm ready for the challenge. (And I'll certainly value these next few months to prepare!)

For now, I just want to say thank you to all the amazing people that welcomed my team into their lives to capture their wedding day. I hope you know that I value each and every one of the relationships that I have built with you over this last year as you prepared for your big day! I've loved meeting your families, your friends and documenting it all for you! I hope we'll continue to grow together, especially as you venture into this new thing called marriage:)!

Thank you again for such an amazing year. Here's to next year! Fabulous weddings (baby and all!).

Happy November

A Little Thanksgiving Decor

I LOVE the holidays. The Holidays as in Thanksgiving and Christmas. I pretty much dislike Halloween and if it were up to me we'd have two months of Thanksgiving and two months of Christmas! So it's probably no surprise that I've had my Thanksgiving decor up since the beginning of October, growing the collection with several on sale pieces at Target today! (Go now, all the fall decorations are on sale!)

We host Thanksgiving every year so this year I wanted to make sure that our dining room had a festive feel! Here is my humble attempt at welcoming our guests in! We have such a strange little house and I find it particularly difficult to decorate. This year I tried my best to work with what we had and I'm pretty pleased with the results! Are you starting to drool for some stuffing?!

Brian & Deb's Wedding at The Barns at Wesleyan Hills

deborah zoe photography the barns at wesleyan hills wedding photographer boston wedding photographer fall wedding0013.JPG

A Fall Inspired Wedding

I hope that Brian doesn't mind me sharing this story! But Saturday, I had one sick Groom. Poor guy must have ate something the night before that didn't agree with him and well, it kept him spending his entire wedding day feeling less than his best. But despite ALL of that (and the incredible strength it takes to hold it together when you don't feel good!) Brian was a trooper. He couldn't help but smile the entire way through the First Look. And with a cup of ginger ale and a glass of water in his hands he smiled his way through the vows. Sickness or not, Brian and Deb were determined to enjoy every minute of their wedding day! Brian couldn't have been happier! Working with couples who truly love one another, who cannot wait to be married, makes my heart glad and keeps me falling in love with what I do over and over again.

Here in New England we are pretty past peak foliage season so I wasn't sure what we'd find for color when we arrived at the The Barns at Wesleyan Hills Saturday. Much to my surprise there was still a little bit of color left on the surrounding trees and we made sure to use them all!

All of the pieces came together to create one amazing wedding Saturday and I'm so excited to share it with you! Enjoy!

We started the day at Deb and Brian's home as the girls busily got ready for the day!The Dana Bartone team helped the ladies look their stunning best! All of Deb's ladies helped her get dressed and ready for the First Look.I could not get enough of Deb's amazing Pronovias gown from Mariella's Creations. After Deb was dressed it was off to The Barns to meet her Groom!Gosh, I couldn't love First Looks more!!! Here is another reason why!Brian sported a Joseph Abboud suit from Nordstrom. There were some amazingly beautiful willow trees on the property that we made sure to incorporate. Then came the leaves!!!Amazing orange leaves everywhere...I was completely blown away by the stunning floral creations from Stylish Blooms! So perfectly fall! The Bridesmaids wore beautiful purple dresses from Belsoie.Time to get married!Brian had that smile on his face the entire time! Married! The boys had to get in on the action too...I loved the fall inspired details at Brian and Debra's reception, especially these adorable pumpkin escort cards!I hear the sangria and spiked apple cider were DELICIOUS. This pregnant wedding photographer could only smell...Sugar Hoot Bakery created the most darling modern fall inspired cake!I love this image Coco captured during their First Dance, so so sweet. Then it was time to party!DJ Jeff Bromley made sure that everyone had a good time! The perfect ending to a perfect day!

Happy Halloween

From Maya Boo to You

Let me first start by saying this picture is NOT how I had envisioned it! In fact I had made Maya the most adorable Halloween costume...she was going to be the Target dog! However, my rambunctious pup had other plans in mind and kept ripping off anything I put on her. So pumpkins and candy it was!

And if Maya looks a little scared to you, she is. In fact Halloween might be her most dreaded holiday of all. Strangers coming to the door every hour, ringing the door bell, dressed as goblins and ghosts, firemen and princesses?! The horror! We'll definitely be spending the night trying to keep her from barking her head off and scaring all the little innocent kids...

Tonight Dave and I will enjoy a night in together handing out candy to the neighborhood. We always get one cute crowd! We may or may not have had candy for like an entire month and I may or may not have already stole a few pieces for myself... I blame this entirely on the baby;)

I hope you have a wonderful Halloween, from one scared pup to you!

My Promo Video

It's Finally Here!

*It's amazing what a difference a day can make! Yesterday we woke up to rain, extreme wind and a leaky roof. This morning we woke up to downed branches, lots of puddles and some sunshine. To everyone that was affected by Hurricane Sandy, my thoughts and prayers are with you, especially those in NYC! Stay safe friends!*

Today is a super exciting day at Deborah Zoe Photography! It's Promo Video day! This has been a project that has been on my Business To Do list for what has seemed like YEARS! But creating a promo video isn't really something you can just cross off your To Do list! I wanted to know and be sure about who I was as photographer before I invested in a video and of course I wanted to make sure that I worked with the right people!

When I met Tom and Melissa of Long Haul Films I knew that they were the perfect fit for me! Their wedding work is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING and really who doesn't love a Brit/American duo?! But in all seriousness, I saw their work and was hooked immediately!

It seems like a life time ago that I first met Tom and Melissa to talk about possibly working together. During that initial meeting at a little coffee shop in Boston, we talked about my goals for the business and my dreams for the future and our shared hatred for some particular wedding reception songs;). Together we came up with an execution plan for a promo video.

A new blog, new website and one very full wedding season later, here we are!! Melissa and Tom I simply adored working with you guys!! I couldn't have asked for a better experience! Thank you so much for all the work you poured into this project! I can't believe that this day is here, but I'm so excited to share what all this planning has lead to! (A special thank you to Jon and Diana who made the trek out to my home office to be a part of such a special project!)

So here we go!! My first Promo Video for Deborah Zoe Photography! Enjoy!

Sandy is Comin' !

I saw this post on Facebook and I just had to share!! Bwahahaha. Yup, Hurricane Sandy is officially here... or it might be officially here in a couple of hours. All I know is that the wind is starting to pick up, it's raining and it's cold! I have a clear view from my home office of the trees that surround our home. I have to admit it's a little unsettling to see the branches blowing wildly in the wind!

So instead of spending too much time on the computer today I'm sharing a quick sneak peek of the gorgeous fall wedding we had the privilege to photograph this weekend! Everything about this wedding was just pure perfection and I can't wait to share the whole thing later this week!!

For today, we're batting down the hatches aka hunkering down under the blankets, eating an abnormal amount of junk food and giggling at all the weathermen standing precariously close to the edge of beaches around New England. Everyone stay safe! I'm going to enjoy the day at home with the hubby!

Heart Love Weddings, Paper Hounds, Style Me Pretty

I have two weddings left in the 2012 wedding season...TWO! I cannot believe that the season is winding down and coming to an end. This past year has flown by!! Even more, I cannot believe that I have two weddings left until baby!! This year has brought so many changes and next year bring even more! And while I can't wait for 2013, I sure am going to relish these next few months "off" to prepare for next season and baby!

This wedding season has been nothing short of amazing. I've had the privilege of working with some of the best people in the world. And no, that's not an exaggeration. It's my goal to be able to work with people who I connect with, who are excited to get married, who are genuine, kind, and who understand why I love what I do. And I can confidently say that the couples I get to work with far exceed any expectations I could ever have. I'm one lucky girl!

So it's no surprise that I love seeing the weddings of my amazing couples featured. I know that their wedding was fabulous, but now everyone else gets to experience it too! I love working these these publications too, they always do an amazing job retelling each couples story and highlighting the best of each wedding! As a photographer, well that just makes me very happy!

Congrats to my recent Brides who had their weddings featured! Love you ladies!

Christmas Cards Are Here

Holiday Cards.jpg

Get Your Christmas On Early!

I'm SO excited to announce that for this Holiday Season I will be offering Christmas Cards!! One of my FAVORITE holiday traditions is sending and receiving Christmas cards.... and I save every singe one! Our refrigerator and living room are usually plastered with photos and cards celebrating our friends and family over the past year.

When Dave and I began to think about celebrating our first Christmas together of course I agonized over what kind of card we would send! I opted for a photo card with a little message from us and one of our favorite images from our wedding day! And to this day, six years later, it still sits on my mother in laws refrigerator!

As we all know the holidays tend to creep up on us! So this year I wanted to get the ball rolling and open up orders for your custom Christmas Cards! I have some adorable designs to offer couples, each with a different feel, perfect for all those varying tastes!

If you are interested about creating a Christmas Card for this holiday season please send me an email and I'd be happy to send along all the information! Happy Holidays everyone! (well almost;)).

The Secrets to Great Getting Ready Images

When I decided to get married, I never even gave the location of where I'd be getting ready a second thought. Of course we'd get ready at my parents house and head to the church immediately afterwards. It was a meaningful location, we'd be with my parents and it was a place that I felt most comfortable.

But looking back I REALLY wish that I had thought more about this portion of the day. My girls were cramped inside my parent's modest home, there was no room for my dress, and embarrassingly enough there were still remnants of my teenage days hanging about in my room. My dress was hung from the ceiling fan and the room was cluttered with all of our things.

Out of this "regret", this past spring I wrote a Wedding Love post with tips on how to make the most of this part of your day. You can check it out here. I wanted to encourage Brides to think about things like their Getting Ready location, their Getting Ready details such as the bouquet, dress and accessories, and of course leaving enough time to photograph it all.

Coming to the end of the season, I've spent quite a bit of time with my Brides this year! Some Getting Ready scenarios worked really well, and some were a little more challenging. I wanted to share just a few lovely ladies (and men!) and their images from the Getting Ready portion of the day, (What were the challenges? What made it successful?) in hopes that it can help future Brides envision what will be best for their wedding day!

Rachel and Rob both got ready at the Renaissance Hotel in South Boston for their September wedding. This was great as they selected suites for bridesmaids and groomsmen to get ready in. There was room to spread out, a separate room to store "clutter" such as bags and clothes and a huge bank of windows that allowed plenty of light into the room.I would say that the biggest challenge of this suite, even for all it's benefits, was that it was obviously a hotel room with no unique or defining features. Working around what we were given, we tried to "hide" the fact that we were in a hotel! Additionally, there was also no real place to hang the dress except on a hotel room door. BUT despite any challenges I would shoot in this room day in and day out, for it's size and ample supply of natural light! For Stephanie and Nick's August wedding, Stephanie chose the unique and quirky Hotel Marlowe to get ready. This Hotel offered so many lovely nooks and crannies for all of Stephanie's wedding details. For example, we found this great spot in the hotel lobby for her dress! I highly recommend looking for getting ready locations with personality and character.Stephanie got ready in an oversized hotel room. This was great for her girls and vendors as it allowed everyone to spread out. However, this meant that there was clutter EVERY where and no additional room to hide it away in. We moved a mirror and cleared a corner of the room to allow a simple and de-cluttered space for Stephanie to get dressed. Don't be afraid to move things around and "style" a portion of a room or area. You don't want anything to distract from a beautiful Bride, especially a stray hairspray bottle! For Pat and Liz's farm wedding, Liz got ready in the home of the farm's owners! We were given a VERY small room to work with, with hardly any natural light. Certainly a challenge for me as a photographer! I used the small window light to my advantage however and used the small directional light to give contrast and interest to her details. Once again we placed the Bride in a de-cluttered corner of the room. I wasn't afraid to move things around including the carpet to ensure that the Bride had a simple and pleasing background to get dressed. And while the room was small, it provided LOTS of character that fit right into the theme of Pat and Liz's wedding. For Diana and Jon's Church Landing wedding, Diana got ready in a suite with her bridesmaids. However, the suite was small and cramped with lunch, hair and makeup vendors and Bridesmaids getting dressed. So, we chose to have her Diana get into her dress in a separate area of the Inn that provided more light and space.I'm so glad we did! We had a beautiful bank of windows to work with and lots of room to spread the dress out! Finally for Jon and Emma's Ocean Edge Wedding they both decided to get ready on the venue's property. I've included this picture of Jon because I want to emphasize that all the things we have been talking about in regards to the Bride totally apply to the Groom! Look for an area with lots of natural light, space to spread out (and to hide clutter) and simple backgrounds for the Groom. My second shooter Coco, placed Jon near a window as he prepared his bowtie. There is beautiful light coming through the window, with a simple backdrop to emphasize Jon. While Jon was across the property, Emma got into her dress at her hotel room. To take advantage of the small amount of natural light coming through the deck window, I decided to actually step out onto the deck and shot into the room. This room certainly had it's challenges, but once again we placed the Bride in a small corner, removed any distractions and made it work! As you prepare to think about your Getting Ready images, remember location, location, location! Look for places with natural light, lots of space to spread out and environmental character to add interest to your images. Don't be afraid to remove distracting elements from the room or to style certain areas!

Jon & Emma's Wedding at Ocean Edge Resort

A Cape Inspired Wedding

When Emma's Maid of Honor got up to deliver her toast, tears were already in her eyes. She tried to hold her composure together, but the love that she shared for both Emma and Jon overwhelmed her. The best part of her toast was when she read a card that she had kept since she was 18! It was from her dear friend Emma. Jennifer read aloud the sweet words from Emma that described how she would always be there for her friend, that she could be the rock that Jennifer could lean on and how they'd always been friends forever. I don't think there was a dry eye in the room.

But that's just the way that Emma and Jon are. Two loyal people who love deeply. They love their friends and their family and this past Saturday it was abundantly clear just how deep that love runs. Planning their Ocean Edge Resort wedding from several states away was not easy. But Emma and Jon's loved ones came together to help throw them a celebration they will never forget!

Announcing...Little Baby Parker!!

Six and half years of marriage, one apartment, a cat, one house and a dog later Dave and I are about to embark on a new chapter of our lives together: AS PARENTS!!!

Yes, we are expecting our first child this coming April! I can hardly believe that I'm even writing this down! Having kept this a secret for most of the first trimester, I can't tell you how amazing it feels to be able to share our news with the rest of the world beyond just our family and several close friends. We had our 13 week appointment Tuesday and after hearing our baby's heartbeat for the second time, I cried happy, relieved, tears delighted to know our little one was happy bouncing all around inside of me. (A concept that still continues to blow my mind!) This gave us the confidence to share this incredibly personal but exciting moment with the rest of you!

We've been asked, how did we know that this was the time? And I don't really have an answer for this other than it just was. Dave and I have completely enjoyed these last six, almost seven, years together. We've traveled, we've bought a house, adopted a cat and a dog. We've learned to live with one another, we've learned to disagree, to communicate, to love unconditionally, to have fun together. And now, well now, we're ready to take on a new role in life and experience a new adventure together.

Pregnancy so far has been completely different than what I had expected. Every pregnancy is different and I had heard some pretty horrifying stories from women in their first trimester. To be honest, I was stressed for this fall wedding season envisioning the worst. And while I was completely exhausted and most certainly nauseous for those first three months of pregnancy, I made it through. (MANY thanks to my amazing clients and amazingly supportive second shooters who made this fall a WONDERFUL experience!)

So here we are in the second trimester! It felt like this day was SO far off and couldn't get here soon enough. And yet when I look back on the last three months, the time has FLOWN by. I'm left wondering if this is what it will be like come April!

Next month we'll be able to find out the sex of our baby (yes we want to know) and of course I'll be sharing the bigger pregnancy news with you here! But certainly don't expect this to become a mommy blog! If you'd like to follow our journey to parenthood in a more personal way, please feel free to check out the VERY personal blog I started back in August. Check out The Parkers Made A Baby here.

At times I can't honestly believe that this is my life! Am I truly pregnant? I mean I have an ultrasound to prove it and heard the baby bouncing around via a doppler, but really this can't be ME!! It truly has been a completely surreal experience but I'm incredibly thankful (INCREDIBLY THANKFUL) to be given this experience and responsibility. Even if it means I can't enjoy a glorious cup of joe for the next nine, now six months. ;)

Friend and fellow photographer, Kendra, took some time yesterday to grab a few photos of Dave, myself and as my Dad calls the baby "the player to be named later". I'm so thankful for these images with the hubster, especially while I still have a waistline!

The Art of Balance

Learning To Slow Down

These past few months have been life changing for me. I've been forced to slow down, to take time for myself, to spend time with family and to take a look at what's most important in life to me. And let me tell you, it hasn't been easy. To slow down? I don't even think that is even in my vocabulary! But here I have been, blogging less, resting more, learning to work more efficiently and trying to stress less.

Normally, this would drive me crazy! I can list off a million and half things that I need to be doing any moment of any day. Recently I heard the statement that in order to succeed you cannot stop. You must constantly be stoking the fire, pushing forward, working hard. Don't take a break because if you do, you will fail. And before I might have agreed. That the only way for me to succeed, to accomplish all my goals, to reach my dreams, would be to never stop moving, never stop doing, never stop working.

But these last few months have taught me a valuable lesson. That working hard has it's place, but so does slowing down. That perhaps, taking time to enjoy life and those around you, perhaps that is the key to success. That those things fuel us and light us up, allowing us to work hard and push harder.

It's not just about working hard all.the.time. It's about balance. So today I'm going to work. But I'm also going to enjoy sleeping in a little longer, a walk with my dog, a movie with my husband. I'm a work in progress, but lately I've learned to slow down, just a little, and truly enjoy all that this life has to offer.

Changing How I Share Images

From the inception of my business I have offered high resolution, un-watermarked, digital files to my clients. At the VERY beginning I delivered those images via DVDs. But quickly I began to see that DVDs were becoming obsolete. They were a pain to create and with the files in my cameras getting bigger and bigger, DVDs just couldn't keep up with the amount of information I had to pass on to clients. I soon discovered customizable thumb drives. Quick, easy and available in various sizes, they were the perfect solution to delivering high resolution images to clients.

Then in June of 2011, the crew of SHOWIT (the company I use to create my website) came to Boston to talk all about a new way of sharing images, PASS. I went, interested in what they had to say, but knew that I was doing just fine with my thumb drives. My clients were happy, I was happy, why did I need to change?

Fast forward to last October I had a fiesty conversation with my friend Katelyn about thumb drives and PASS and just how we weren't "ready" to make the full switch to PASS yet. For me, I was nervous, how would it change my business? The industry? Would my clients be responsive? PASS was SO new and I didn't fully understand it yet. I was skeptical and I wasn't ready to embrace what it had to offer. We both had made the transition to thumb drives and were perfectly happy with the way things were. Katelyn wrote a great post about her transition from DVD's to thumb drives to PASS, which you can read here.

But as PASS continued to grow and develop, the more intriguing it became. The allure of sharing images with my clients quickly, easily and via the internet was overwhelming. More and more people are using the internet, their phones, their computers, to access and share images, news, and information about their life. PASS takes advantage of this and puts photographers right in the middle: Sharing their images with their clients and giving their clients the power to share their wedding images with family and friends!

To me, as a photographer, this means that my clients are receiving their images quickly and easily. AND it means that my images are being seen and shared with a large group of people, beyond just the Bride and Groom. Now Mom and Dad, friends and family can see and share my client's images! Sharing within a completely branded and customized website and gallery no less! Even when shared on Facebook, my clients images are completely branded to MY business! Talk about a cohesive experience for my clients and a great marketing tool for my business!

Ok, ok, so you might thinking "That's all good Debbie, but what exactly is PASS?" And to be honest, when I first heard about PASS I had the same question! So I'll do my best to explain PASS and the way that I use it in hope that it will give you a glimpse into how the program works and how it has the potential to grow your business!

-- PASS is an image sharing program. Just like an online gallery, you simply upload your images to the FREE program.

-- After your images have been uploaded it creates a gallery for those images. From there you have the option to create sub galleries and organize your images to your hearts content! I typically will create sub categories like Bride & Groom, Reception, Bridal Party, etc.

-- Once a gallery has been created you have the option of publishing that gallery to the Cloud, where your images will be stored for a year. There is a yearly storage fee of $29 per gallery. And while this may SEEM like a hefty price to pay, especially when you think of how many galleries you want to upload, consider how much you might be spending on sending out DVDs or thumb drives. I found it to be LESS than what I had been currently investing in!

-- PASS will store the images in the Cloud, so not only is this a gallery for your clients but it is instant back up for you!

-- Right from your gallery, you can control who can see your published images, if you want to allow high resolution downloads, and how people can share those images.

-- As a SHOWIT user, I have the ability to create sub sites off of my main website. Therefore, for each client I create a customized sub site and integrate their PASS gallery right into that site!! It's a fully customized and branded client site that I can send to vendors and clients to share images from a wedding day!

-- The amazing people at SHOWIT also created a free PASS Gallery APP. This means when my clients are on their iPhone or iPad they can share their wedding images immediately and directly from their devices!

So there you go, in a nutshell, that is PASS. I use PASS to share wedding images with my clients in a customized and fully branded way. I use PASS to make the lives of my clients EASIER! Their images are in one place and are incredibly easy to access. And that means they are sharing them MORE than ever! That is something that is GOOD for my business! I find PASS to be a win win for my clients and for myself! I love publishing and delivering a new custom site to clients and the reaction so far has been amazing! Literally minutes after delivering a site, clients are sharing their images on Facebook and talking all about them!

Here's a peek at Jon and Diana's client site with integrated PASS gallery!I still deliver thumb drives to my clients in addition to a PASS gallery. To me, I love the accessibility that PASS offers. But I'm also a fan of a beautiful package that I can send to my clients! Again it's all part of creating a great client experience. For now offering a PASS gallery as well as a beautiful packaged thumb drive does exactly that!

I know that many might not agree with my approach to sharing images. As photographers we are taught to fiercely protect our images, especially in this digital age when it is so easy for someone to "steal" them. But at the end of the day, what is more important to me is the experience that I am giving my clients. I want my Bride to be as excited as I am about her wedding images! I want her to have the freedom and ease to share those images quickly and easily! And having a BRANDED, customized way of doing that, makes me feel even better knowing that my work and my art is being shared in a controlled way! PASS might not be for everyone, but I have absolutely loved how it has revolutionized how I share images with my clients!

Eddie & Sarah Engaged

A North End and Harborside Engagement Session

How cute are these two?! I just adore Sarah and Eddie, two quiet souls who love deeply. And I thought I couldn't love them more until Eddie revealed, that he was in fact a child model. I was convinced he was joking, but about half way into our session together, I realized he was SERIOUS! Yes, folks, Eddie was a child model, a child model who won awards and competitions! And sadly, a child model whose career was cut short when he couldn't read the script of a commercial he was auditioning for. What talent, wasted ;)!

So of course I fully expected Eddie and Sarah to then "bring it" during our time together and BRING IT they did! I met up with Sarah and Eddie in the historic Seaport District for their engagement session. Eddie proposed to Sarah in Boston and they both work in the city, commuting together every day (how adorable!). So it was only fitting that Boston was the backdrop for their engagement.

Church Landing at Mill Falls Wedding | Jon & Diana

A Lakeside Inspired Wedding

Sometimes you just meet people and you click. Immediately you feel connected, like you could have been friends forever. That's how I felt when I first met Diana and Jon. We decided to connect at a local Starbucks to talk all about their upcoming wedding at Church Landing in Meredith, New Hampshire. And right away, I knew that I just HAD to work with this couple. They are two of the kindest, warmest people I have had the chance to meet, and I was honored to be a part of such an incredible day!Β

It rained, no poured, on Jon and Diana's wedding day this past weekend. But despite how much water soaked into the ground, Jon and Diana couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. Everything that they had dreamed of came true. Finally they were husband and wife and they celebrated every minute of their day together. Wedding Love

The Wedding Bouquet

The Wedding Bouquet. At times I feel like an entire wedding could be summed up in the Wedding Bouquet. Loud and colorful or muted and petite, what the Bride carries down the aisle is often symbolic of the feel and theme of her wedding day. The Wedding Bouquet is a huge part of the wedding and it's important to think carefully as you plan and execute the design and feel of the bouquet.

Over the years I've seen SO many different types of bouquets, from colorful to monochrome, from large and in charge to soft and petite. Every Bride and florist seem to do things differently, certainly making my job tons of fun!

This bouquet is from a fall wedding, where the Bride chose deep roses and varying flowers to compliment the seasonal colors of New Hampshire. You can just FEEL the fall when looking at this bouquet! It was as if the Bride had gone into a field and picked a large bouquet of wildflowers for her wedding. It completely tied in the feel and season of her wedding and added contrast and color against her white lace dress.

While the Bride carried a large bouquet of mostly white flowers, she picked a varied bouquet of purple flowers for her girls. Again, each bouquet has several different kinds of flowers adding interest to each arrangement. They played wonderfully against the dark purple dresses of the Bridesmaids.

I loved the Bride's choice of bright purple/pink flowers for her bouquet! Instead of matching the color of her wedding exactly, she decided to use a complimentary color that would play well against the cobalt blues found throughout the rest of the wedding day. While this is a Bridesmaid's bouquet I included it because I loved the way that the colors worked together. The wedding colors were orange and green and in this bouquet the florist used varying colors to reflect that. It's important to note that this was from a beach wedding as well. Again the type and color of flowers uses helped to echo this theme.Purple is one of my favorite colors, so I was swooning over this bouquet earlier this year! Big and beautiful this bouquet popped against the Bride's white dress and helped to tie in her purple color scheme.

As you can see, the big, bright pop of purple ties into the Groom's tie and accessories and helps to create a cohesive and vibrant feel!

I certainly love the idea of using non floral objects within a bouquet! Here the Bride carried a bouquet of roses and COTTON! How cool?! It created a beautiful, soft and romantic feel and definitely added that "Wow" factor many Bride's look for. The small size of the bouquet played well against this petite Bride's frame.

I love the use of varying colors of pinks and coral from this summer wedding! It was a gorgeous seaside affair and the corals played really well against the nautical theme. Again, I love the use of different kinds of flowers and using larger flowers to accent the bouquets.

Now I will be the first to admit, that I'm not a huge fan of the white Bride bouquet. As a photographer, I want something that plays against the white dress, something that will pop and add interest! However, I have seen some AMAZING "white" bouquets that worked well against a Brides attire.

Now these bouquets are not all white. There are added pops of color, through the use of varying flower types and sizes. It adds much needed interest and contrast to the bouquets without taking away from the main color, white or cream. And like in the example below, they certainly play well off of the Bride's dress as well as her Bridesmaids dresses!

I love how unexpected this bouquet is! I can't even count how many different types of flowers and greenery were used. My eye keeps scanning the bouquet looking for something new. I just love how detailed and intricate the design is!

As a Bride, don't be afraid to think outside the box or to go all out when it comes to color in your bouquet. This is the item that you'll be photographed the most with (outside of your dress and Groom;)) As a photographer, I love bouquets that add a "wow" factor to the Bride's attire, something that contrasts against her dress and ties in with her Bridesmaids and Groom. Not only is it fun to photograph, but it gives a glimpse into the overall theme and feeling of the day. Your bouquet is a small reflection of your wedding day, so make sure that your choices in flowers, colors, shapes and sizes echo that that theme!
