DZP Is Coming To Charleston

After Dave and I returned from our family vacation in April we immediately started to plan a mini getaway to South Carolina. Call us crazy, but when you're a wedding photographer and every minute of your summer and fall are planned, there leaves very little room for time to jet away. We've been dying to have an opportunity to visit the charming city of Charleston so when the chance came we grabbed it!! We head off this weekend to eat all the food and take lots of pictures! We'll be traveling without the babe and while you KNOW I'm going to miss Jonathan TERRIBLY, Dave and I are pretty excited for a few days together (read : sleeping in).

I've been wanting to visit Charleston for quite some time now...the historic charm, the quirky character, the GOOD FOOD, it has all I could want in a city and more! I can't believe we're actually going, it's going to be wonderful!! Of course I couldn't head to a city as charming as Charleston without opening up the possibility of a portrait session!! If you or someone you know will be in the Charleston area and is interested in a portrait session, let's get connected!!

Travel : Charleston, South Carolina

When : Sunday May 24 - Tuesday May 26

What : A portrait session in the Charleston area

Estate At Moraine Farm Wedding | Jeremy & Nicole

estate_moraine_farm_wedding_deborah_zoe_photography_0001.JPG

As one of Jeremy's groomsmen was toasting, ahem, roasting the Groom, he stopped the laughs for just a moment to comment about Jeremy. "He is full of compassion." And as I scanned the room for reactions everyone nodded their head in agreement. He went on to say Jeremy was full of life, had a spirit of adventure and was fiercely loyal. Together with Nicole, they welcomed those around them with open arms.

It was a powerful testatment to this sweet couple. The air seemed to breath to life the love their family and friends lavished upon them. Whether it was family member after family member who rejoiced and celebrated the couple during the First Dance or the sweet moments throughout the day between Nicole and her Dad, it was clear that Nicole and Jeremy are celebrated, loved and very much cared for.

Their wedding at Moraine FarmsΒ was nothing short of perfection, a quintessential spring dayΒ here in New England, I couldn't imagine a better gift for this deserving couple!!Β Nicole and Jeremy, thank you for inviting us to be a part of that, to witness the love of your family and friends and to be there to document it all. With much love, enjoy your images!!

Spring Anniversary Session At Glen Magna Farms

glen_magna_farm_deborah_zoe_photography_0038.JPG

It's been on my heart to celebrate marriage with anniversary sessions for quite sometime (our own session by Katelyn James will forever be an incredible memory for us!), and last Thursday that dream came true. Many local creatives came together and rallied around this vision to bring together a STUNNING spring inspired anniversary session at Glen Magna Farms. It was one of the most perfect days of the year, a beautiful gift for this amazing couple.

Who are the beautiful duo you may ask? Kate & James better known as the Feds, well known wedding photographers in the New England area. Kate & James have been married for 11 years and are Mom and Dad to four beautiful girls and one handsome boy. As wedding photographers, over the past 11 years, they have rarely been in front of the camera. Last Thursday they dropped everything, escaped for the afternoon together. As a fellow photographer, it was an HONOR to celebrate their commitment and all that they have experienced together with an anniversary session.

You might be wondering why I am so passionate about anniversary sessions. I mean what's the point right? I truly believe that marriage is something that should be celebrated long after the wedding day. Day after day, through commitment, sacrifice, and pouring into one another, a marriage truly becomes more and more beautiful as the years go on. And yet we only celebrate marriage at the very beginning. Whether you have been married for 1 year, 4 years, 10 years or more, your commitment is one to be cherished. Anniversary sessions are a way of celebrating marriage and all that encompasses long after the wedding day has ended.

Throughout our time together Kate kept saying she felt like royalty. Or if you're from Massachusetts "A Kennedy!" She let out a little giggle whenever James would pull her in tight. James couldn't help but embrace his beautiful wife and whisper in her each just how much he loved her. To watch as these two slowly let the world melt away, reconnect and fall more in love made my heart soar. Because that right there is why I love these sessions mean so much!

Here's to you James & Kate, I hope these images remind you of all you have achieved together!!

Kate and James were pampered the day of by some amazing creatives who grabbed hold of our vision and helped make it come to life!! Many thanks to Glen Magna Farms for providing the beautiful backdrop, the gardens and estate were divine. Flair Boston dressed Kate in a stunning tulle gown, fit for royalty. Les Fleurs created the most romantic pink and cream bouquet that matched Kate's elegant look flawlessly. Amanda McCarthy Beauty and Kris Pavao Just Hair perfected Kate's look with a timeless and soft feel. It was a dream to photograph the contributions of the talented team behind the shoot!

Happy Anniversary : Matt & Christina

boston university castle wedding deborah zoe photography _ 0040.JPG

As I sat down to write this post, I had to take a double look at the calendar. Has it TRULY been a YEAR since Matt & Christina tied the knot in Boston? They celebrated their first wedding anniversary yesterday (Happy Anniversary!!) and today they have graciously shared a little bit of the year they have had together!! I love these anniversary posts so much!! There is so much to celebrate ; a year of partnership, a year of learning, a year of growing together. I'm always so proud of these couples who have worked diligently to build a firm foundation for their marriage. And while these posts are "fun" recaps of the year that was, I hope they also serve as testament to how beautiful this commitment is. I hope you'll celebrate with me and cheer these couples on as they continue through life's adventure together!! So without further adieu let's hear it for Matt & Christina!!

D : Happy anniversary! I simply cannot believe that it has been a year since your wedding!! Has time flown by for you as well?

C&M: In some ways, it's hard to believe that it's nearly our first anniversary.  On the other hand, it sometimes seems like the wedding was a long time ago!  Either way, we're excited to be able to dig in to the top of our wedding cake, which was scrumptious (chocolate cake with espresso filling)!

boston university castle wedding deborah zoe photography _ 00201.JPG

boston university castle wedding deborah zoe photography _ 00201.JPG

D : What is your favorite memory from your wedding day?

C&M: It's hard to pick just one memory - partly because there were so many special moments and partly because the day was a bit of a blur (as we were forewarned that it would be)!  If we had to pick one part of the day, it would probably just be how much we were surrounded by love - from each other as well as our family and friends.  It was great to see so many people who love us together in one place.

boston university castle wedding deborah zoe photography _ 00211.JPG

boston university castle wedding deborah zoe photography _ 00211.JPG

D : What has been the best thing that has happened to you as a couple since your wedding last year?

C&M: We'll have to go with seeing the wedding quilt that Matt's mom made for us. The front had a gorgeous design, and the back was made up of squares that our wedding guests wrote on as 'guest book' entries. We hadn't read/seen the squares before they were put into the quilt, so it was an opportunity to finally read the messages (and view the drawings!) that our guests had left for us. Seeing the squares brought back the wonderful memories of sharing our wedding with friends and family, and it was incredible to see them all put together so artfully in a form that we will be able to use and cherish for years to come.

boston university castle wedding deborah zoe photography _ 00401.JPG

boston university castle wedding deborah zoe photography _ 00401.JPG

D : What have you learned about each other over this past year?

C&M: We don't think there have been any big discoveries this past year (which may be a good thing!).  The process of planning and preparing the wedding may have been more enlightening than the aftermath, as that was one of the busiest and most unusual times we've had together, especially since a lot of the wedding was DIY.

boston university castle wedding deborah zoe photography _ 00701.JPG

boston university castle wedding deborah zoe photography _ 00701.JPG

D : Traveled anywhere fun?

C&M: Our honeymoon to Scandinavia!  We spent three weeks in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland, and it was heaven!  We had wanted to go somewhere that neither of us had been, where we wouldn't have health/safety concerns, and that would be an escape from the muggy summer heat of Boston.  Scandinavia did not disappoint.  We cruised fjords, saw rainbows over waterfalls, stood on a glacier, toured majestic palaces, and even saw the Swedish royal family!  The weather was lovely, the people were friendly, the food was yummy, and the sights were fantastic.  It was a wonderful splurge, and a lovely opportunity to be constantly in each others' presence.

boston university castle wedding deborah zoe photography _ 00921.JPG

D : Any tips you can offer newlyweds for their first year of marriage?

C&M: Enjoy not having to worry about the wedding anymore!  It was a lovely day, but it was also nice to have it behind us.  Also, be prompt in working on your thank-yous; we were lucky to have a few weeks between our wedding and honeymoon, and we made sure to get everything sent out before we left.  We would not have felt like tackling those after getting back from the trip!

Oceanside Maternity Session in York, Maine

york_maine_maternity_deborah_zoe_photography_0001.JPG

Sarah and Mark were one of my first clients in the early years of my business. Sarah has been one of my strongest cheerleaders since the very beginning and I have been ever so grateful for her love and support over the years. Sarah is an avid runner, coach, business owner and Mom of two (soon to be three!) kiddos. (You might remember her from her recent Mommy Interview here on the blog a few months ago.) She's about to welcome her third baby any day now!

Sarah and Mark have a family home on the coast of Maine. Literally, the waves crash up over their seawall! It is such a beautiful location and holds such a special place in their heart that it was the perfect backdrop for their maternity session!! Despite the fact that it was terribly cold, it was an amazing evening spent with dear friends celebrating this new chapter in their life.

Mark and Sarah, we are over the moon excited for you -- enjoy your images!!

Anthony & Christine Engaged

long hill sedgewick gardens engagement deborah zoe photography _0019.JPG

A Long Hill Estate Engagement Session

I think Anthony and Christine win the award for most times an engagement session has been rescheduled! We had originally planned their session during the winter with hopes of a snow filled backdrop. And while we had LOTS of snow, job changes and a busy schedule kept us from nailing down a date. We decided to hold off until the spring and even that held it's challenges with lots of rain and very cold temperatures. So when the rescheduled rescheduled date for Anthony & Christine's engagement session came around we were determiend to make it work, no matter what.

As luck would have it, rain was scheduled all day!! But Anthony and Christine were troopers and agreed to wake up for an early morning session at Long Hill Estate in Beverly. And I'm SO glad they did! Not only did we beat the ran, but it was just beautiful out. Light dew misted the grown, the spring flowers were just starting to bud and we had the entire property to ourselves! It was all around perfection! (Even if the temperature dropped to freezing and it started to rain!)

Anthony and Christine, thank you so much for being such troopers despite the early morning wake up call and the immenient threat of rain! It was an absolute joy to photograph your engagement session!! Enjoy your beautiful images!!

A Plum Island Maternity Portrait Session

newburyport photographer deborah zoe photography_0150.JPG

A Plum Island Maternity Portrait Session

When I first started my business, I had no desire to photograph maternity portraits. But as the years went on my couples started to begin growing their families and I realized that I actually LOVED having the opportunity to photograph past DZP couples on their journey to parenthood! And then wouldn't you know I had a baby of my own! I suddenly knew what it felt like to anxiously await the arrival of your baby. I knew the feeling of your baby kicking and wiggling and moving about. I understood the joy a baby brought and I found myself hooked. As a photographer, I'm allowed a unique opportunity to celebrate these wonderful seasons of life with my couples. What a privledge it is to document their engagement, their wedding and the start of their family. (Plus, anniversary celebrations along the way!!) It's one of things that I love MOST about photography and I'm so grateful to be a part of that journey!

Which brings me to Katie and Kevin, who were married in 2013 and are now anxiously awaiting the arrival of their first baby, a BOY! I still remember their wedding like it was yesterday... I can remember Katie's parents BEAMING with pride and can only imagine just how excited both Katie & Kevin's families are at the coming arrival of Baby Shaw!!

I met the lovely couple at Sandy Point, a remote beach at the end of the Parker River Wildlife Refuge in Newburyport. We practically had the beach to ourselves and spent the afternoon wandering the ruggesd shoreline. Being the lover of all things ocean, I was in photographer heaven. Katie radiated with beauty (yes she GLOWED!) and Kevin was just SO proud and protective. Ah, it's adorable!!

Katie & Kevin, thank you so much for inviting to me to document such a momentous time in your family's history!! I cannot wait to see pictures of baby boy, but for now bask in the glow of pregnancy!! Enjoy your images!!

Travelogue : Walt Disney World

walt disney world by deborah zoe photography _0015.JPG

If you were following along on Instagram then you may have seen some behind the scene snaps of our recently family vacation to Disney! We were lucky to travel with my parents over my Mom's spring vacation for some time in the sun and fun with the Mouse. I've been traveling to Disney since I was a kid so it was EXTRA special to be able to share in the experience with my parents and Jonathan. He did amazingly well despite the lack of naps, routine and abundance of big scary characters (which he grew to love)! We had a great time together and made some extra special memories! Now, when can we go back?! Here are few more magical memories, enjoy!!

We're Headed to Disney World!

were headed to walt disney world deborah zoe photography.jpg

A Few "Mouse"keeping Items For The Week

Yes, that's right! The Parker Family is headed to the Happiest Place On Earth and I am unashamedly over the moon excited about it!! Last time we headed to the land of Mickey was for my 30th birthday so I could run in the Princess Half Marathon. This time we'll be traveling with my parents for a fun family adventure. I cannot wait to throw on my shorts, paint my toenails and sport some comfy flip flops, especially after this horrid winter we've had. To feel the sun on my face and a warm breeze in the air will be nothing short of glorious. To be surrounded by the magic of Disney won't be too bad either:). Jonathan will be celebrating his second birthday (April 30th) while we are visiting and so that makes this trip EXTRA special!!

Did you catch my Disney reference in the blog tag line?;):) While we're away, I wanted to share a few "mouse", I mean house keeping items for Deborah Zoe Photography over the next week. I will have limited access to email and will be responding to all coorespondence as soon as we return. There will be no new blog posts BUT don't worry the blog is full of beautiful things to see, check out the latest posts below! :

*A & P's charming MIT engagement session

*Emily & Dan's nautical seaside engagement session in Newburyport

*My interview with the talented Cheyenne of The Schultzes

*Yunji & Isaac's stunning spring wedding at The Topsfield Commons 1854

I'll be sharing much of our adventures over on Instragram, so be sure to follow along there...I might even broadcast live on Periscope (@deborahzoe), which I'm especially excited about!! Any Disney fans have requests on where we might broadcast from?:)

I'm off to pack and get ready for our trip!! Have a beautiful last week of April, see you in May!!

Topsfield Commons 1854 Wedding | Yunji & Isaac

I couldn’t imagine a better way to kick off the 2015 wedding season than with the amazingly sweet Yunji and Isaac! They celebrated their spring wedding on Saturday surrounded by friends and family who had flown in from around the world! Yunji and Isaac met while they were both studying in Boston. It was so sweet to listen to Yunji's brother as he toasted the couple tracing Yunji's path to Boston and to Isaac. Fittingly they decided to marry at The Topsfield Commons, just a short drive north of the city to pay homage to the place that means so much to them and their relationship.

Their day was a celebration of all the things that make up who they are. Yunji & Isaac's Mums wore traditional Korean dresses, Yunji's family performed a beautiful song during the ceremony and guests popped streamers as the couple walked down the aisle. Yunji & Isaac even joined in on the fun by surprising their guests with song during the introductions.

In short it was a magical day and we were honored to be ther to document it all! Yunji & Isaac, while your off jetsetting in Hawaii, I hope you have a few seconds to sneak away and relive the day!! Enjoy your images!!

The Mommy Interviews with Cheyenne of The Schultzes

The Mommy Interviews with Cheyenne of The Schultzes

When I first started out as a wedding photographer I kept a little notebook filled with blank pages. I would cut out pictures from magazines or print images off the internet of poses and couples that I found inspirational. I had a fire to learn and everywhere I looked I saw photographers who were doing amazing things and creating beautiful work.

One of those photographers was Cheyenne of The Schultzes, a husband and wife photography team based in North Carolina. I would spend hours reading through their blog, continually inspired and encouraged by not just their beautiful work, but their hearts as well. Many images in that little notebook of mine are theirs and I’m so thankful for the creative push they inspired in me through their own work!                                                              (Image by Emily Chidester)

Years later Cheyenne continues to inspire. Not only is she an established photographer but she is also Mom to two of the most adorable kiddos. She shares openly on her blog and Instagram about the joys and challenges of balancing life as a Mom, Wife and Photographer. As a Mom myself I very much relate to her stage in life and love how she always strives to put her family at the forefront. Cheyenne and Geoff are an amazing example of what it looks like to love their family and serve their clients and business well. I am continually amazed at how they use their gifts not only as photographers but as parents to bless others!

Which is why I am over the moon excited to introduce you to Cheyenne today! She is such a source of encouragement to me as a Mom and business owner and I just knew she had to be a part of the Mommy Interviews! I hope that you are encouraged and empowered by the wisdom and insight she will be sharing. Let’s get to it!

Cheyenne, thank you so much for taking part in the Mommy Interviews, I cannot wait to dive right in! First would you mind sharing how long you’ve been in business and how long you have been a Mum?

Goodness gracious, thank you so much for that warm introduction and for allowing me to be a part of this fantastic series, Deb. Geoff and I started our photography business in spring of 2007 (take that statement with a grain of salt...when we started, Geoff was 2nd shooting for me with our point and shoot camera! :)) and then had our first baby in 2010.  It’s so crazy how fast 8 years can go by...having kids will do that, I suppose!  Our son, Boone, is currently four and a half and our daughter, Crew, is two.

How has having children changed not only your business but your life?

A better question might be to ask how has having children NOT changed my business and my life.  :)  In no particular order...

+ Simple tasks now take triple the amount of time to complete when children are present.

+ Our once a month date night has become sacred....and expensive.  $10/hour just for childcare adds up really quick!

+ I get a lot less sleep.

+ We have to limit how often and how far we can travel for work...especially when both of us are shooting.

+ I became a hypochondriac and should buy stock in hand sanitizer. Having to leave a sick kid with a babysitter when we have a wedding to photograph is just about my least favorite thing.

+ At any given time I will have unanswered emails that have been at the bottom of my inbox for three months. And I give myself grace for those.

+ Using the restroom without a child busting in to ask me what I am doing is a distant memory.

+ My house is a lot more messy. Cheerio dust on the couch. Permanent grime from sticky, dirty, greasy little fingers going up the walls of my stairwell. Baby dolls with no clothes on, plastic binoculars, itty bitty dinosaurs and about a million stuffed animals regularly litter the floor of my home.

+ I have to be a lot more discreet when I eat my chocolate.

+ It took me a couple of years to realize it, but I learned that if I was going to make my way to the surface...and stay there...I was going to need help.  Help with business and help with life.  Hiring a studio/personal assistant to help us 10 hours a week and a housekeeper every other week has been the best money I have ever spent.

+ Getting "me time" feels like luxury. Truly, when I get to go to the grocery store by myself, I might as well be on a cruise.

+ I find enjoyment in really simple things (like watching inchworms crawl across the sidewalk) as I get to re-experience the wonder of the world through the eyes of my kids.

+ My heart grew about 10 sizes after I had Boone. And then it grew 5 more after I had Crew.  I love those kids so much that it hurts.

As business owners, there are many things competing for our attention all the time. Are there things that you and your husband Geoff do differently to ensure that your family is placed at the forefront?

We keep a pretty tight grip on when we do work and when we do family...keeping a schedule and establishing boundaries have been really important to prioritizing our family time. The kids go to their β€œschool” Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, which are the days I am in the studio to get my work done. Wednesday is my β€œMama Day”, which is the day I get the kids all to myself. I really try to be intentional and fun about what we do together on Mama Day by making a plan a couple days in advance. Until the kids are in regular school, Friday will always be our family day (with rare exception).  Besides that, I try to schedule portrait sessions on Monday or Tuesday evenings and will only take one per week.

At the beginning of 2015 you shared about taking a few days away with your husband to plan and dream for the year ahead. Would you mind sharing with DZP readers why you felt you needed to do this and how it has helped your marriage, family and business?

I should start off by telling you that my husband and I are goal junkies.  Yes, it sounds super nerdy, but we love setting goals regularly for the year, month, week and weekends.  When we go on our monthly date together, we will most always bring along our little notebook of goals to review what we accomplished in the previous month and to make a plan for the month ahead.  Not only is it fun to dream about the future, but it allows us to take things a step further to make a plan for making those dreams come true.

I think it was about four years ago that we started taking time at the beginning of the year to hire a babysitter (or recruit a set of grandparents) and get out of the house for a day to connect, seek God and make a plan for the year ahead.  We would set an agenda and go to various favorite coffee shops and restaurants.  This year, we decided to extend it by an extra day and get out of town together.  We drove to nearby Asheville, NC and took ourselves on a coffee crawl to various coffee shops around the city...Instagram hashtag and all.  :)  We dreamed about the things we wanted to do, the places we wanted to go, the people we wanted to love in 2015.

Life and business are always very full and time goes by so darn fast. Taking the time at the beginning of the year to set goals, and then again each month, helps us to live intentionally to do the things that we want to do or feel that we are being called to do.

Now that your kids are toddlers, what are some of the unique challenges you have experienced as a Mom, balancing parenthood and business with kids in this stage? Do you envision a shift in how you balance these things as your kids continue to grow?

When I first became a mom, I was trying to do everything and thus, found myself failing at everything.  I felt like I was only able to give about 30% of myself to any given area, which left me feeling like the worst wife, mother, friend, business woman, etc. that there ever was.  Over-dramatic, perhaps, but out of whack hormones, lack of sleep and too much on your to-do list will make you believe crazy things.  I have learned that for me to be a great in the roles I have in my life, I need to compartmentalize them.  I no longer try to overlap my roles between motherhood and business.  I do best when I have focused business time and I have focused family time.  Now, when I'm with my kids, I can be fully present with them.  I know they are being served better when I can sit down on the ground to play Candyland with them and not be distracted with the mountain of emails I have in my inbox or packaging up that client order.

Would you mind sharing more about your heart behind your business and how having a purpose in business has given you an opportunity to serve your family?

I would love to.  :)  Two years ago, Geoff and I had some big conversations about the foundation of our business. Showing up just to take pretty pictures wasn't enough anymore.  If we were going to continue to devote a good chunk of our life to this work, we were going to need some real meaning and real purpose. From those conversations, our core purpose was born: "to create art that matters and to genuinely care for others."

Our hope is that for those we photograph, through the years of the good and the bad, they can look back on their wedding images and remember the love and the joy that was there that day.  That they can have hope that they can make it out of the hard times of marriage and that it is worth fighting for.  Knowing that we are doing work that really matters is incredibly fulfilling.

With so many things that can negatively influence our outlook (like social media) how do you maintain a positive perspective, especially when it comes to being a Mom?

I will often "rewrite my feelings", which is an exercise that I learned at the Making Things Happen Conference.  Whatever negative thought I have about myself or my situation {I am the worst mother ever}, I rewrite it on my heart as a positive {I am a GREAT mother}.  And then I force myself to say it out loud until I believe it.  Truly, it works.

I also try to regularly spend time reading the Bible to receive instruction from God for my life and business.  Below is a common verse that helps me stay grounded and positive:

"Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable, and right and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise." - Philippians 4:8

What would be the best piece of advice you could give to someone who is a first time Mom and entrepreneur?

How about my top three pieces of advice?  :)

1. Community is everything.  Having other moms in similar seasons to do life has been absolutely invaluable to me.

2. Care for yourself.  Eat good food, move your body, get fresh air, sleep when you can, take regular showers.  And do things that bring you joy.  Seriously, make yourself a list right now of things that bring you joy and happiness. And then go do them!

3. Give yourself grace when you drop a ball. You aren't perfect...it's going to happen. Balls will be dropped, and yet, it won't be the end of the world.  Do the best that you can and then rest knowing that that is good enough. And know that the really hard times won't last forever.  I promise, they won't.

What has been your greatest joy being a Mum?

I don't think I could possibly narrow this down to one great joy.

Having her rest her head on my shoulder when she's sleepy. Making applesauce muffins with him in the morning. Having a "turn down for what" dance party in the kitchen with both of them while cooking dinner. The hugs, the kisses, the belly laughs that come from the tickle fights. Witnessing the utter excitement over her new gold shoes or him seeing him freak out over Thomas the Train at the theme park.  Watching her rub his back when he is hurt and tell him in her sweet voice, "it's okay, Boone". Both of them plowing down the door to get to me, shrieking "mama!!!!" when they get home from school. Watching her belt out the lyrics to "Let it Go" with such commitment and hilarity.....I could literally go on and on and on.  Now that I'm literally in tears, I think it's time to sign off.  :)

A Downtown Newburyport Engagement Session

newburyport engagement session by deborah zoe photography_0020.JPG

The seaside has special meaning to Dan & Emily, it's been a big part of not only their relationship but their childhood as well. Fittingly, Emily really wanted to have their engagement session be a reflection of the things that are most important to them, mainly the ocean & the beach!! We headed to Newburyport, known for it's historic seaside community and beautiful beaches. And while it was a tad chilly the city did not disappoint! It was a glorious spring day and it was incredibly fun to get these two in front of my camera!! (Check out Dan's belt buckle... a fishing hook, how cool!)

Emily and Dan are two of the sweet people, they are incredibly kind and gracious to everyone around them. But even more sweet, is their quiet love for each other. It's completely evident that Emily and Dan are best friends and it was a joy to have them in front of my camera. Emily and Dan, thank you so much for allowing me to capture your love, nothing is sweeter! Now on to all the pretty!

MIT Engagement Session

A Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engagement Session

MIT holds a special place in my heart. It's my husband's alma mater, while he was working towards his Masters in Engineering he met a beautiful redhead and fell madly in love;).  I have many happy memories visiting Dave on campus and every time I have the opportunity to return, they come flooding back!

So you can imagine how excited I was when I recevied an email from A discussing her idea for an engagement session at MIT! Both P & A are studying at the famous university and will be getting married later this spring. P & A loved the idea of walking the campus and visiting some of the places around MIT that had special meaning to them. The icing on the cake? In Taiwanese fashion, the happy couple dressed up in FULL wedding attire!

P & A, thank you for inviting me to document such an special season in your life. You are such sweet spirits and it was a delight to have you in front of my camera!! Enjoy your images!!

Let's Connect!

Five Ways To Connect On Social Media

Five Ways To Connect On Social Media with Deborah Zoe Photography.

Five Ways To Connect On Social Media with Deborah Zoe Photography.

Who uses Social Media?! I'd love to take an informal poll of the readers who stop by the blog to see what social media sites they are using and why! (Feel free to leave a response below in the comments!) It's so amazing to me the many outlets and tools we can use to connect with each other nowadays. Sometimes I feel like I'm caught right in the middle, knowing how to use all these tools but not necessarily wanting to use them all, all the time! Below I've shared my top five social media outlets and how I use them. I'd love to connect with you and follow along!

1. Instagram (@deborahzoe)

I've been using Instagram since 2011...that's almost FOUR years!! It's hard to believe that it started out as a way to "destory" your images with crappy filters and has now urned into a popular way to connect and share with the world around you! Instagram is my favorite social media tool and it's here where I post pictures of every day life, from gorgeous weddings & fabulous couples to my adorable family and our adventures together! I'd LOVE to connect with you there!

2. Facebook (/Deborah Zoe Photography)

Oh Facebook, we have a love/hate relationship don't we? As a Northestern University graduate, I had the chance to be one of the very first people to be on Facebook -- an interesting thought! Facebook has certainly grown and changed over the years, today it is the way I share about what is happening with Deborah Zoe Photography. Facebook fans will be the first to know about blog posts, website updates and DZP news! It's a great way to stay up to date and in the know:) Just be sure to click "Get Notifications" at the top of the page to ensure DZP shows up in your newsfeed!

3. Pinterest (/deborahzoe)

I was SO confused when Pinterest first jumped onto the social media scene. Today it's my guilty pleasure and where I could spend hours and hours searching for Paleo recipes, tips about traveling to Disney World and pinning gorgeous wedding florals. It's a mixed bag of all the things that I love. PLUS if you're a DZP Bride, Pinterest is how we collaborate to style your engagement session, a fun way to plan and prepare for the session! I'd love to see you there!

4. Periscope (@deborahzoe)

Periscope is the newest trend in social media and while I'm usually reluctant to jump on the social meda bandwagon, I have to say Periscope is really fun! (and kind of addicting!) Want to broadcast or livestream? Periscope is for you! As for DZP, Periscope will be how I share insider tips, what's happening behind the scenes and hopefully some live shooting! My hope is to keep this tool specific for photographers and those wondering what it's like behind the scenes here at DZP! Bonus, if you're on Twitter currently, it's SO easy to connect and get set up with Periscope. Hope on over and join today and let's connect!

5. Twitter (@deborahzoe)

I'm going to admit something... I rarely use Twitter. I've never really understood Twitter or how it could fit into my social media lineup. BUT I am on Twitter and I do use it, sometimes;)! I mostly just connect with clients, vendors and other photographers to cultivate community and share interesting things! If you're on Twitter and are a past or current DZP couple, a vendor OR photographer I'd love to connect! Perhaps you can teach me a few things about Twitter along the way:)

How do you love to connect on Social Media? What are your favorite places to share content? Any new social media tools I need to know about?! Leave some tips in the comments below!!

Springtime Fun

At Home With The Parkers

I'm about to run off to my second of three sessions this week so today's post is short and sweet. I couldn't help but share two adorable pictures of our darling boy Jonathan. Oh I just love him so! I think these might be the most adorable Easter photos ever taken, but I might be a little biased:). As a photographer sometimes it can be hard to remember to take photos of our family. Sometimes my camera means "work" and when I'm with family I just want to be. Othertimes I'm so busy living in the moment that I forget to actually capture it. I'm learning to walk the line between documenting our life and enjoying the moments together. For me these images are not about pretty (though I do my best to capture our family in the best way possible!) It's about storing away little treasures here and there. Stealing moments, stopping time. Because come next year this little boy will be gone, replaced with an older, wiswer (yet still adorable) version.

So today I'm sharing my treasures with you. Keepsakes of such a dear time in life. Gosh that smile right there just melts my Mama heart.... Happy Tuesday everyone!!

Happy Anniversary : Paul & Emma

2015-04-13_0001.jpg

Anniversary posts are probably some of my favorite to write! I absolutely love catching up with past clients and hearing about all that has happened in their first year of marriage. Often is an exciting year filled with firsts, adventures and learning this new aspect of a relationship. It's amazing to watch at couples grow together, deepen their friendship and truly learn what it means to walk through life hand in hand. I just love it!

It's pretty hard to believe that Paul & Emma's wedding was over a year ago now. I mean it truly does feel like it was yesterday (I agree with Emma, too much snow!) It was a beautiful spring day in Boston and we were gifted with beautiful clear skies, warm sunshine and a gorgeous spring day. I couldn't have been happier for these two, for such a wonderful day to celebrate!

I recently caught up with Emma and Paul and interviewed them about their first year of marriage. They certainly have been busy!! Read on to hear all about their crazy year and don't forget to leave them some Anniversary Love!!

D -- Happy anniversary! I simply cannot believe that it has been a year since your wedding!! Has time flown by for you as well?

P&E -- Time really has flown by. I cannot believe it's been a year already. It feels like we just got married yesterday! Then again when you pack as much stuff into a year as we did it will go by fast!  I am not even sure what happened to this year ... I can't believe it's already April! Too much snow =)

D -- What is your favorite memory from your wedding day?

P&E --  This is a hard one! Really the whole day was great! It's hard to pick just one memory! Certainly waking up to perfect weather (70 degrees) in mid-April when I was worried about snow or rain was a GREAT way to start the day! I would have to say my favorite memories would be FINALLY getting to walk down the aisle and see Paul! After getting ready all day and following the schedule I just really wanted the ceremony to start! The 30min before was the WORST part! I am a bit impatient and was as usual ready ahead of time! My other favorite part would have been celebrating with everyone we love! Also our totally ridiculous first dance that we didn't practice at all and just had fun jumping and twirling around! Really the whole day was the BEST!

D -- What has been the best thing that has happened to you as a couple since your wedding last year?

P&E -- Well we bought a house and finally moved out of the city! So that is been great! It has been so much fun making it OUR home! Spending a lot of time together picking things out and planning things! We really cannot wait for the spring to get starting on landscaping the outside! It has been great doing projects together!

D -- What have you learned about each other over this past year?

P&E -- Hmmm .. not to much that we didn't know before! I know that's not helpful but not much has changed other than being married and buying a house! I guess we did learn we do well as a couple with jamming a lot of stressful stuff into one year! While planning a wedding and buying a house are both pretty stressful we didn't really find it that bad. And also it didn't affect us at all with the stress, it brought us closer as we mutually got angry at outside people/factors ;)

D -- Traveled anywhere fun?

P&E -- We haven't gone anywhere fun in the past year because we decided to buy a house pretty soon after the wedding! BUT ... We did plan ahead an put as many of the wedding expenses and house expenses as we could on a travel credit card so that we could take a trip for our 1 year anniversary without having to really pay for it! So I am happy to say we will be leaving this miserable New England "spring" on Monday after our anniversary to head to Puerto Rico for a week of relaxing on the beach, hiking, and eating some good food!

D -- Any tips you can offer newlyweds for their first year of marriage?

P&E -- I would recommend just relaxing after your wedding and enjoy spending time with each other! And to make sure you still plan some special dates! I would not recommend buying a house right after! I feel like we are just now getting to relax! But on the plus side now we got all of the stressful stuff out of the way and we can just relax and enjoy life!

A Downtown Boston Engagement Session

Kate and Jeff spend much of their free time down by the water. Whether it's going for a morning run on the river or sipping cocktails by the harbor, Boston's waterfront has become an intergeral part of their relationship. So fittingly it was the perfect background for their recent engagement session! We first met up at Sam's at Louis to sip cocktails and take in the sights of the harbor. After a quick outfit change, we headed to Fort Point for the sweeping view of the skyline and the cobblestone lined streets. For these Bostonians, it was the perfect tour of the city that they call home.

Kate & Jeff, it was so much fun spending the afternoon together and sharing even a few spots of the city you haven't seen yet:)! Enjoy your images!

Recharging During the Off Season

Recharging During the Off Season

A friend recently told me to enjoy the off season. My first reaction was "What off season?!" I've been shooting, editing, organizing and working behind the scenes all winter and at times it really hasn't felt like an "off" season. But as I prepare for this new year of weddings I've realized that I really need to slow down and enjoy this time right now. I'm still working hard but I do have more flexibility now than any other time of year and I have to force myself to enjoy each moment of it.

A lot of my time is spent with my son Jonathan. We go on "adventures" (code word for errands;)), we play, he takes napes, I catch up on Fixer Upper. It's been a really sweet pace of life and while I constantly want to keep going and going and going with my business, I've really tried to allow myself time to just breath!

One of the ways that I wanted to just "breath" this year was by focusing on my health during the off season. It started small with giving up soda. I was never a huge soda drinker before but the thought of putting chemicals and sugar into my body for a drink that let's be real, wasn't really that satisifying, was enough for me to say no. It started at just January, spread into February, then March and then April.

I really thought that it was just going to be soda, I didn't make a New Years resolution to loose weight, go to the gym or any of the typical resolutions one makes. But in January I noticed a Groupon for a gym just down the road from our home. I started attending, and I was hooked! I have a trainer who I work out with once a week. I have cheerleaders pushing me on and it's been one of the best decisions I have made with regard to my health in a long time. I tell my husband every day how thankful I am that we have made room in the budget for a gym membership. And even though most days I have to wake up at 5:00am to get to class, I count my blessings as I move my legs, raise my heart rate and sweat my tushy off. I'm so grateful for the supportive environment and the ability to MOVE my body.

Your probably wondering where I'm going with this... I promise I'm getting there!

At the end of February I was talking with a friend about this unplanned health journey I was finding myself on. Dave and I had started to make almost all of our meals at home and from scratch but yet I knew that we could tweak things to be healthier. She recommended that I look into Whole30, an elimination "diet" of sorts. I was VERY hesitant at first as it requires you to cut out sugar, alcohol, grains, legumes, dairy, preservatives, and processed foods for an entire 30 days. No lattes for 30 days? But let me tell you, it was life changing. Our diet (and our waistlines) have been revolutionized and I look at food in a completely different way now. (If you have questions about Whole30, feel free to share them in the comments below!)

So what does going to the gym and changing our diet have anything to do with recharging in the off season? For me, none of this would have been possible during the middle of wedding season. It's to busy, too overwhelming, to consuming. These past few months have allowed me to truly regroup, refocus and recharge before the busy time of year comes. This time has laid a foundation for my health that will carry me through the end of the year, which would never have happened if I had not taken the time to do so. I've had precious moments to share with my husband and my son. I've taken a nap on the couch (I NEVER NAP) and I've been able to cook almost every dinner for our family (I DON'T COOK!). This "off season" has been a gift and one I'm enitrely grateful for.

If you're a photographer and you find that you're in the middle or end of your down season, take a day (or maybe two or three) to recharge. Step away from the computer, the email, social media and take a moment for yourself. Grab a cup of coffee with your friend that you've been putting off, head to the gym for a class, learn a new recipe, organize your closet. Do something that energizes you and lifts your spirits.

While it is good and necessary to BUILD our businesses during this off season it is as equally important to make time for ourselves. Because when we invest in oursevles, our family and the people that we love, it in turn makes us better photographers, better artists, better creatives. When we are filled, we can then pour into others. And that makes me inrecibly excited about the year ahead! What do you like to do during the off season? How do you recharge and refocus? Any tips on how to make the most of this slower time of year?!

The Mommy Interviews with Nancy Ray

When I was pregnant in 2013 there were very few resources for photographers who were expecting. I did much of my learning through first hand experiences. Thankfully I had a very healthy pregnancy but I still longed for a support system of people who understood what I was going through, women who understood what it was like to balance a pregnancy and business. During this time I felt a pull on my heart to share my experiences in hopes that it could encourage and equip others. It was during my pregnancy that The Art of Balance series was born.
