Goodbye For the Holidays

Taking A Short Hiatus

It's almost Christmas, can you believe it?! I'm am SO excited for my favorite holiday because this year we get to experience it through the eyes of our darling baby boy. I'm sure he'll enjoy the wrapping paper and boxes more than the actual presents we bought him but nevertheless I cannot wait to wake him up at the crack of dawn (more likely he'll wake us up), run down stairs and experience Christmas Day in a whole new way!! 
 
Earlier this month I posted on Facebook a challenge of sorts to myself. I questioned if I should take a short hiatus at the end of this year from things like social media. After all, we've been through a lot this year and in full honesty, I'm a little tired. 
 
I want to make the most of these precious moments we have together at the end of this year. So instead of blogging I'll be playing in the snow, going on a date with my husband and eating copious amounts of chocolate with good friends and family. I'm practically giddy about it!! 
 
Once again, I'm so grateful to all of you who stop by and visit the blog each day and who take the time to interact and comment. It truly means the world to me!! I want this blog to not just be a place where I write but where you can come to join in the conversation. My goal every day is to write here so as to encourage and equip you and I plan to continue to do just that in the New Year!!

December Self Portrait

Is it truly December? Is the New Year really around the corner? Excuse me a moment as I take a deep breath. This year has been a WHIRLWIND. We were pregnant, gave birth, we sold a home, bought another, we moved. And yet it feels like it all happened to someone else. Sometimes I look back on my Instagram feed just to remind myself, that YES, all those distant memories, those are mine. Those things really happened to us. They are all good and wonderful things, but they truly made this year seem like the blink of an eye.  
 
Typically with my self portrait series I like to list my goals and dreams for the next month, but I'm going to be honest here. I don't really want to plan for the next month!! I going to take these next few weeks to REST and focus on the things that truly matter, one of them being that adorable baby boy flying through the air below;).  
 
I'm so grateful for all this year has brought. We've had some major life changes but changes that have brought so much JOY to our lives. I simply cannot remember what it was like WITHOUT our baby (I probably got a lot more sleep) and while it's not always sunshine, kittens and rainbows, life is five thousand million trillion times more full and lovely with our family of three than it was as just us two.

This month's self portrait is brought to you by my lovely husband who came home early so that I could photograph an event this past Tuesday (yes, in a snow storm...) I tried to relish the moment that I've been walking delicately between as Mom and entrepreneur. I'm still learning but on Tuesday afternoon, I had a few sweet moments where the two balanced together. It was delicious.  
 
I hope you're all having a lovely week leading up to Christmas. And I sincerely hope you find a moment of respite, peace and joy in these last few days of 2013!

New Stationary

Letterpress Stationary from Hartford Prints!

Earlier this spring I was introduced to the beautiful work of Hartford Prints! when they generously supplied the stationary suite for our collaborative styled shoot. I fell in love and began thinking of any excuse I could find to work with them! When the time came for me to redesign my own stationary suite for my business I immediately contacted Hartford Prints!. The ladies quickly got to work on creating pieces that were just me! I chose to have several cards created for the various communication needs I have throughout the client experience. And since I have absolutely RUBBISH hand writing we chose to have much of the text typed out on the card with space for me to write personalized messages to the couple, rubbish handwriting and all;). The cards are beautiful and delicate and are the perfect compliment to my branding. I'm in love!! I cannot wait to start sharing these with all my 2014 clients!! Behind The Scenes

It's hard to believe that this year's wedding season is over! I feel like I was just packing up my bag for the first wedding of the year, my first wedding after having a baby! What a transition it was! It was hard but unbelievably rewarding. I simply could not have accomplished this season without the amazing help from the wonderful team I worked with this year. Plus, together we had a LOT of fun!! Here are just a few images of the behind the scenes action that went into making some lovely images this year!! The Engagements

Yesterday I celebrated the lovely weddings I had an opportunity to photograph this past year. Today it's all about the engagements!! I love photographing engagement sessions and being able to spend that precious time with each couple. It's a time when couples enjoy the moment together, releasing all of the pressure and stress of wedding planning to enjoy and celebrate each other. Of course that is incredibly fun to document!! What a year 2013 has been!! It was incredibly fun looking back and experiencing the wonderful weddings and lovely couples I had had the honor of documenting this year!! This is a post full of wonderful memories, amazing people and a whole bunch of gratitude from me. I'm so lucky to have one of the best jobs in the world, to meet and become friends with some of most beautiful couples all while having the blessing of being a mom and wife. Family Traditions

Annual Christmas Tree Hunt

Thanksgiving came late this year, like really late, so the annual Hammond Family Christmas Tree Hunt came early!! Last Friday Dave, Jonathan, my parents and I made our way to Holiday Tree Farm to continue our favorite family tradition. Usually we search for our tree at an invite only farm, but this year due to drought and deer they took a hiatus forcing us to find a new place. My Dad did all the research and found Holiday Tree Farm, which did NOT disappoint! We were simply blown away the rows upon rows of trees all perfectly pruned for that lovely Christmas Tree look.  
 
Almost right away my Dad found their tree, but I insisted that we need to explore a little bit more before making a decision. We wandered the fields and eventually Dave and I found OUR tree. My family has been cutting down a Christmas tree since I can remember and it was incredible to share this tradition with Jonathan!! (He even wore a Santa hat to celebrate;)). 
 
Of course we came home with a tree FAR to big for our home! How could you not?! Here's to another year of continuing the tradition together! Do you have Holiday traditions with your family?

Jonathan's First Year

Seven Months Old

Seven months old? I have a seven month old?!! How did this happen? Well, ok I know how it happened, but I simply cannot believe that I have a seven month old. There have been times this past month where I have stopped and paused, looking at Jonathan and wondering how he is MINE. I mean I know I was pregnant for nine months, I was there when he was born;), but all of that seems like it happened to someone else. Was it really me? But as I'm thinking away, I'm snapped back to reality as this chubby, lovable, wonderful, baby boy of mine squeals and giggles reminding me that this really is MY beautiful life.  

This month has been HUGE for Jonathan. He learned to crawl, cut his first tooth, started on his second, and now sleeps in his crib in his own room (boy that was a BIG hurdle for me to get over)! It's been an active month and has left me a little tired. It's been amazing to watch him grow and change in what seems to be the most rapid pace yet! 

As I was taking this picture, J felt it was more fun to rock back and forth and this ended up being the only image where I got all of his limbs in the frame with his face looking at me. You even get a hint at those amazing baby rolls on his thighs, sigh, they're the best!!

Product Highlight | Engagement Album

I recently got a few samples in of Engagement Albums from my amazing album company Madera Books. These were created with the Linen Album, a lay flat album bound with a beautiful linen cover. Each album has the couple's name imprinted on the front and is designed to be used as a guestbook with space for guests to leave messages to the couple! 

I love the simple elegance of these albums. There are no frills, just a beautifully crafted album that tells the story of each couple. It's a sweet way to remember your engagement period and a lovely display piece for your home! I believe strongly that images are not meant to live on a computer or a drive, but rather to be enjoyed and loved in a tangible and meaningful way. Happy Thanksgiving

From My Favorite Butter Ball

It's Thanksgiving, in other words my husband's favorite holiday!! He's so excited to teach Jonathan all about turkey and stuffing and gravy. Oh, and Danish Cheese Loaf, a Parker family tradition. I'm excited to spend the day with my family (and for thirteen other hands to hold Jonathan;))!  
 
Not much else to say as we're off enjoying the day as a family so I'll leave you with our little butter ball...rolls for days!! I'm pretty sure it doesn't get any cuter than this!! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Dreaming Big

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing a dear friend and fellow photographer, Emilia, and catching up over dinner. Since she lives in Chicago it's a rare treat that we get to see one another face to face, most of the time we spend texting or chatting on Skype. But last night over drinks and delicious food we talked life and business. And I felt incredibly challenged. In a good way. 
 
As the night wore on we chatted about our goals and dreams. I blurted out that I wanted to travel, I wanted to photograph couples all across the country and the world. And to me it was just a throw away thought, but Emilia pushed me. "Why don't you blog about it?!" 
 
Sometimes you need a friend, someone on the outside, who can look at the bigger picture, see the things you can't see, believe in you when you don't. That's just what Emilia did for me last night. So, in that vein, that I'm putting it out there : My Photography Bucket List. The places that I just can't wait to photograph happy couples in love.... 
 
Paris -- I traveled here when I was a teenager with my parents and a piece of my heart has stayed there. I am intoxicated with dreams of going back...photographing a couple in the city? Be still my heart... 
London -- Perhaps it's because I'm from New England (oh hey Pilgrims!!) but I feel a deep connection with our friends across the pond. I've been here twice and I'm just itching for a reason to return!! Let's make it happen, k?! 
Scotland -- You know that movie Brave? Well they fashioned my hair after Merida's...kidding. I'm part Scottish and I have always wanted to try and trace my family roots to this lovely part of the world. Plus ever since the latest Bond movie I've been dying to place a couple in one of those sweeping valleys!! 
Sonoma -- Dave and I first traveled to Sonoma and Napa Valley two years ago as part of a photography workshop. I never knew just how much I wold love this part of the country. It is simply incredible!! 
Chicago -- Oh the Windy City, how I adore you!! Besides Boston, Chicago is my favorite city in the country. The fresh, upbeat, urban vibe, coupled with the historic architecture is a photographer's dream backdrop!! Please, oh, please get married in Chicago and hire me to photograph your wedding:)! 
Miami -- I've traveled to South Beach but never into Miami, and even that was only a day trip. I would absolutely love to capture a couple in this WARM and beautiful part of the world!! 
Salzburg -- I simply fell in love with Austria ever since Julia Andrews sang her way through those hills. There is just something so utterly romantic about this city and I have grand dreams of capturing a wedding here. 
Austin -- Y'all, can we just talk about how awesome Austin is and how amazing it would be to have a cowboy boot glad couple to photograph there? 
HAWAII!! -- Dave and I were lucky enough to have a "second" honeymoon of sorts in Hawaii three years ago. And every year since I've practically begged Dave to take me back. Some day we'll make it there and I hope that I'll be able to photograph a Bride and Groom along the beach, at sunset, with palms trees swaying in the background...and my heart melting. 
 
I hope to be able to travel and explore the world in the next several years and these are just SOME of the places I want to visit and WORK in!! This is just a short list, but why not start here! If you're wondering why I'm putting here on the blog, well why NOT put it out there? Keeping those dreams to myself does no good, but putting it out into the universe, well there's power in that. Who knows if I'll ever photograph in those places, but I sharing my dreams with you here. You never know...

2013 Wedding Season

What A Year It Has Been!

Oh, 2013, what a wild ride you've been. I was pregnant, had a baby, ran a business, took care of a baby, photographed 11 weddings and numerous portrait and engagement sessions, and generally just tried to stay on top of it all. In May as I surveyed what the rest of my year was going to look like I was intimidated. I had no idea how I was going to survived the wedding season as a new mom. How would I navigate this new territory? Would I be up for the challenge?  
 
Now, on the other side of those questions, I can confidently say, yes I can, but with a LOT of help. This year was a challenge, a great and wonderful challenge, but a challenge none the less. And without the support of amazing family and friends as well as the amazing couples I had the opportunity to photograph this year, none of it would have happened. I was welcomed in, with open arms and open hearts, by each couple and it made my job extremely joy filled. 
 
As I poured out my heart to them, they poured out their support and love right back, often asking about my baby, my hubby, my life. I can't explain to you what it means to not only be counted as a wedding photographer but as a friend. I'm so grateful for the couples who not only care about what I do, but who I am. That is INCREDIBLE. 
 
Looking back at each of these couples I am overwhelmed with thankfulness. I am grateful to know each one of these people and to have been a part of such incredible days. I probably sound like a ball of cheese but I don't care. I overwhelmed with thankfulness for this business and the people I get to meet along the way. 
 
To all who made 2013 such an magical year, thank you!!I like to take a selfie with each couple I work with and here are my 2013 couples!! (Minus two, which happened to fall during the epic iPhone debacle of 2013...)

Brooksby Farm Engagement Session

Barrett and Hannah are both Cornellians, people who are studying/have studied at Cornell. It's where they met and fell in love and it plays a HUGE part in not only their courtship but their engagement as well. As Hannah tells it, she and Barrett never had a relationships on their mind, but when they met, all that changed.  

Hannah was, like most freshman, unsure of her feelings towards all the new change college can bring. Being a freshman can be hard and sometimes lonely and what often brought Hannah comfort were the famous chimes that would ring throughout Cornell's campus. These chimes played a huge part in encouraging Hannah during those first few months at Cornell.  

Barrett, who is very musical, was also drawn to same chimes that brought Hannah so much joy her first year on campus. Through his time at Cornell he became involved in the very selective team that plays the infamous bells (he's currently head chime master!). Well, when Hannah found this out she was immediately drawn to Barrett and saw it as a sign. Just as the chimes played a huge part in her first year on campus, Barrett was about to play a huge part in the rest of her life. Ahh, ivy league love;). 

While Barrett and Hannah live outside of New England much of Hannah's family still reside in the area. Both Barrett and Hannah love the old charm of New England and especially love the fall here. Fittingly, Hannah wanted to take what she loved most about New England in the fall and turn it into an engagement session. So with a little bit of inspiration and the help of Brooksby Farm we created an ode to all things fall in New England. Hot apple cider, a cozy blanket, the changing leaves, a wool scarf. I absolutely loved how adorable these two are and how each hand picked item helped to pull the session together.

They are so CUTE!!Most of the foliage is gone now, but I was amazed to see these apple trees still had color!!Work it you two...Hannah, you are beautiful.Of course we had to indulge in some hot apple cider!!There were scattered sprinkles throughout the afternoon, but Hannah and Barrett were determined to make the most of every minute together!!Remember that scene from my Best Friend's Wedding when George is laying on the bed with Juliet tell her to tell Michael that she loves him?...yeah, inspired by that!!:)So cozy!!Hands down my favorite from the day! The light was simply amazing!I loved the intricate detailing on Hannah's ring, beautiful!After a quick outfit change we wandered the property around the farm as the skies continued to clear.Work it, work it!

Four Years Of Weddings

A Lighthearted Reflection

As we were driving home last night I casually mentioned to Dave that Sunday was my last wedding of the season. He seemed surprise that the end of the season was already here and I have to admit that it's crept up on both of us. As we chatted a bit more Dave asked me "How many years has it been now?" Running my own business and photographing weddings has become such a huge part of my life (as any small business owner can relate to) that it took me a moment to remember a time that I wasn't doing this!  
 
Officially this has been my fourth season as a business owner and wedding photographer, though I've been working and shooting for quite some time before that. But Deborah Zoe Photography has been alive for the last four years, and has we drove through the night Dave encouraged me to think about some of the things that I've learned in these last four years.  
 
Of course I take everything seriously and so I thought about all the business knowledge and customer service care I've learned. But Dave, being the awesome guy he is, took a more light hearted approach. "No, no, no," he said, "Tell them about how you hate Quickbooks and have learned how your Husband can be bribed in hugs and kisses to do it for you..." 
 
Ok then! Here are four of the more lighthearted things that I've learned as a business owner and wedding photographer these last four years. I pray someone can relate. I'm not the only one...right?!;) 
 
1. I hate Quickbooks.  
I absolutely, whole heartedly hate Quickbooks. But I do realized that in order to run a legitimate business you need to keep track of things like say, oh I don't know, your expenses and deposits and taxes. When it comes down to actually tracking those things my head turns to mush and I blankly stare at the computer screen or more likely browse JCrew and stalk Facebook. Thank goodness for husbands who can be persuaded to balance my Quickbooks for me with the bat of the eye and a come hither stare. Ok I don't do any of that, but I do pay him in a kiss and a hug!! 
 
2. My husband loves college football. And wedding days.  
My husband has a alternate life when I'm away at weddings. And to give the man credit he does a LOT to keep our home and life running while I'm away. He also does a whole lot of football watching too. He practically rejoices when the fall arrives and my weekends are full. Thanks hunny, miss you too;). When I'm away the boys will play... and watch a lot of college football. Dave practically binge watches college ball, it's on when I leave during the day and it's still on (sometimes) when I arrive home at night. Dave loves wedding days.  
 
3. Never barf at the altar. 
Yes folks, I almost threw up in front of the altar during a ceremony last year. I divulged this story to the Bride later and she got a kick out of it, but at the time I was freaking out, afraid I was about to toss my cookies right there in front of the ENTIRE WEDDING. This is how I found out I was pregnant. Luckily my amazing second shooter saw the look of horror and sickness on my face and rushed to get some water out of the car. I made it through with a smile on my face glad to say I have never barfed at the altar yet. 
 
4. Always chicken fingers and bread.  
If there is one thing I simply crave towards the end of a wedding day is bread. It is almost like torture when the bread is served and I watch, with drool on my mouth, as guests enjoy each savory bite. Do I crave bread in every day life? NOPE. But for whatever reason on a wedding day that bread basket is like some tempting treat I just NEED to have. That goes for the chicken fingers too. I'll pass on the steak please, can you just bring me the kid meal with a heaping serving of chicken fingers? Apparently I need more carbs on the wedding day... 
 
So there you have a few of the more fun things I've learned over the years. Please tell me you can relate;)!!

Jonathan's First Year

Six Months Old

Month six, oh month six. Jonathan has seemingly grown over night this month. He had his first attempts at crawling, can sit up almost unassisted and is increasingly more and more aware and interactive. He loves other babies and eating paper. It is simply a joy to watch him discover and explore the world around him.  

Month six has had it's challenges. Jonathan, while being an incredibly joyful baby, has also developed a sense of likes and dislikes. Mainly disliking naps, sleep and anything related to closing his eyes. He constantly wants to be a part of whatever is going on, even if his body desperately wants to rest. I guess he got that from his Mama. 

The other night Jonathan, Dave and I laid on our new living room carpet and played together as the tv was muted in the background. I turned to Dave and said "We need to cherish these memories right here, soak it in, revel in it." He quietly shook his head and pulled us in close. Those moments right there, our baby quietly playing, my husband holding me close, those moments are what life is made of. I truly wish I could capture those moments forever in a box, to be opened on days that are not so beautiful. I'm so grateful God allows us to experience such sweet joy. 

So Jonathan is six months old. He's growing quickly into a little man. I cannot wait to see what the next six months holds in store for him but for now I'm going to cherish these beautiful moments I have with this precious little nugget. Sleepless nights and all.

House of Seven Gables Engagement Session

A House of Seven Gables Engagement Session

I don't think that many couples can say that an earthquake brought them together, but for James and Debbie that's exactly what happened. Both were traveling and met while on a hiking expedition in Patagonia. They interacted some but spent little time together during the trip. At the end of the trip however, there was a huge earthquake destroying the airport that they were supposed to leave from. Huddled under a tent, waiting for a return flight back to the States, James and Debbie began to fall in love. It would take a few more dates and a long distance relationship to solidify their commitment, but their shared experience under that tent built the foundation that is their relationship today. I for one find that wildly romantic! 

Last week I met them both in Salem at the House of the Seven Gables for their engagement session. Both love the outdoors and historic settings and the Gables was the perfect spot for these two! I simply adore the history and charm of this area of Salem and I am so thankful for the wonderful team at the Gables who welcomed and invited us in!!

How adorable are they?! I knew right away that I was going to have fun with them!!This white room was a photographer's dream...Definitely a favorite from the day!Adorable...I love this one too...there were so many nooks to photograph in, I loved it!!I love this series!! That red house was an awesome backdrop!!After a quick jaunt across the property we snuck away into the garden. The light and color made it simply magical.After a quick outfit change we stole a few more portraits in the courtyard.LOVE this one!!The trees were full of beautiful foliage in and around the side streets near the Gables. The light was perfect and so of course we had to take advantage!!These next few are some of my favorites from their session. When I asked if they would be up for throwing some leaves in the air, James couldn't have been more excited!! I love when couples take chances and trust in my vision, because you end up with adorable pictures like these;)!LOVE these!! James was giggling because Debbie was having a little trouble throwing the leaves just the right way...hehe.Foliage perfection.The good looking couple. Work it guys!!Debbie, you are beautiful!James is originally from the area and so we wanted to make sure that they had pictures which represented all that is wonderful about New England. Of course we had to get a few pictures near the rocky coast. LOVE, love, love, the result!!A perfect ending to a perfect fall afternoon!
