We moved into our home over two months ago. Right away we successfully opened and unpacked every box but were not so successful at putting the contents of those boxes away!! Our hallways are still filled with STUFF. Every day I walk by it, my eye starts to twitch. But despite my OCD tendencies to get EVERYTHING done at once, we've taken our time to settle into the home, to live with it for a while and to figure out exactly how we want to make it OURS.
This past weekend my husband and I buckled down and completed one room in our new home, Jonathan's room. We might have cheated a little, as this was the only room in our last home that was "finished". We simply moved some furniture around, rethought a few pieces of decor and voilà, we were done! I absolutely love this part of the house, the sun shines so brightly in this room and it makes it a joy to raise Jonathan in. I love sitting in his chair rocking him to sleep (or at least trying), watching as Dad plays with his son, and observing Jonathan as he explores the world around him.
I'm sure this room will change as Jonathan grows, but for now I love his farm themed nursery!! So sit back and enjoy the first room of our house tour!!
Here are a few before and then LOTS of afters!Lots of reds, yellows, blues and greens!!Can you spy the baby?!One of my favorite spots in the room is this little nook near his books, perfect for playing and reading!Dave worked really hard this weekend to hang the bunting just right... I'm so happy with the way this little DIY project came together!!There are lots of sheep in Jonathan's room! Unfortunately he thinks the sheep mobile is a toy and so we've had to retire it to the closet...I made this during a snow storm and seven months pregnant...and while I was proud of my craftiness (which is rare for me!), Dave likes to tease me because I painted a Rooster laying eggs...Has anyone read Otis?! Then you know who that is on the right:).So there it is, Jonathan's nursery... a room I spend more time in these days than my office. I'm so happy we've created it to be a retreat and a special place just for J. Next up... the rest of our house;)!

Mark & Marlo Engaged
A Fenway Park Engagement Session
I really didn't plan it this way...who knew that the Red Sox would be in the World Series?! But how appropriate to share this adorable Fenway engagement session with you today after a victory in Game One last night! Often couples will seek my advice when it comes to the location of their engagement session, and of course I'm always happen to offer any suggestions that I can. But when it came time for Mark and Marlo to pick a spot they knew exactly what they wanted.
Both Mark and Marlo are born and raised New Englanders, and the Red Sox (heck all Boston sports) have a special spot in Mark and Marlo lives. So last week we braved the crowds and headed to Fenway Park to enjoy some time walking around the field and enjoying the excited spirit that surrounded the park. We, ok Mark, even spotted some Red Sox as we walked. Too bad we didn't ask them to hop in a picture or two...
Mark and Marlo met while studying at the University of Connecticut and instantly became best friends. Adorable really, and their friendship shines brightly still. You can tell that they truly enjoy being together and have built a beautiful foundation for their marriage. I loved spending the afternoon with them and simply cannot wait to celebrate as they marry next summer at Regatta Place. Whether or not you love the Red Sox, I just know you'll adore this couple and this session as much as I did. Congrats Marlo and Mark, I can't wait for next July!!
The Red Sox have grown beards for this 2013 season, which have now become infamous. Of course we had to take pictures in front of this amazing poster!!The area around Fenway is quite industrial and this alley way is one of my favorites spots to explore!!Definitely a favorite from the day...trash and all;)!I kept joking that I gave Mark and Marlo the "hard" poses first...but seriously they rocked it out!!How adorable are they?!Gate E is one of my favorite spots to photograph outside of the park....HOT!!Doesn't Marlo look like Topanga from Boy Meets World right here?! The park was bustling with activity but we managed to find a few angles that weren't cluttered with spectators. After a quick jaunt to Kenmore Square we were off to the Public Garden for the rest of their session! (This being right after Mark spotted Ryan Dempster walking down the street...:))Before they changed outfits we took a few moments to grab some portraits with one of the only trees left with foliage in the park... it made for a beautiful backdrop! How stunning is Marlo's ring?! Her Burberry scarf made for the perfect backdrop too:).I know, I know, I'm a sucker for twirling photos...but how could I not be with this amazing light?!These two know how to work it!!The next series are some of my favorites...the light, the couple, the location, it was perfection.Sometimes direct sunlight can be scary (harsh shadows, strong highlights) but in this case I think it worked beautifully!!I love when couples trust me enough to take risks...Mark and Marlo have no problem climbing this rock with a host of people looking on. I'm so glad they did because these last images were my favorite from the day, thank you guys!!
Working With A Team
A New Learning Curve
This past year, as a new mom, I knew that I needed to bring someone on board in addition to my second shooter to work with me on the wedding day. The past four years of business I've taken a very independent approach when it came to running my business and working on the wedding day. I've always had a second photographer with me but never saw the need for adding in an additional team member. That was until I had a baby.
If anything, having a baby makes you realize that you just can't do it all on your own. And in an effort to ensure that my clients had the best experience possible on the wedding day, I decided that for this year, I would bring on an assistant to help. And I'm so glad I did! I got to work with some amazing people over this past year and it was so much fun to work as a team together.
So as the wedding season winds to a close, I've got one more wedding to go, I decided to reflect back on the things that worked with having a second shooter AND an assistant on the wedding day. And while I know a lot of photographers work this way, for me it was a new change and I wanted to share what I learned through the process.
First, assistants are awesome. And so are second shooters. Photographers seem to be split down the middle when it comes to a team approach. Some love working alone while others have a whole team of people to get the job done. For me, I absolutely love working with a (small) team. It not only allows me to give my clients lots of coverage of the day but it makes the day even more FUN!! I so enjoy being able to spend the day with other photographers, dancing on the dance floor, answering questions, working together, being goofy and just plain enjoying our jobs. Plus it allows me to be less stressed as I know I don't have to be in all places at once. And though I still run around like crazy, making sure to capture as much as I can alone, it's wonderful to have people who have a team approach and are doing the same to capture as much as possible for the couple.
Since I work alone (without my husband or a business partner) I need outside photographers to come in and help out and so I will often reach out within an online professional photographers group from which I can choose other professionals to work with. That is what I did this year and absolutely loved the team. I chose to work with all women, and appreciate their perspective of the day and their willingness to get the job done. Cristen, Lauren, Karla, Amanda, Krista, Audrey and Coco were just fabulous and I feel grateful to call them friends and co workers!! I'm also so incredibly grateful for their hard work and dedication to my clients. Love them!!
Through this past season I learned that I just can't do it on my own, and I need to let go in order to succeed. With the birth of a new baby and my wedding season starting shortly afterward, there were many times during a wedding day in which I needed to sneak away to pump (TMI?;)) and I never wanted my clients to be bothered or burden by this. By having a second shooter AND an assistant I was able sneak away with out interrupting coverage, knowing that I had a capable team of photographers ready to go should anything happen during those ten minutes I was away. It was such a reassuring feeling and I was proud of the team for keeping down the fort, so to speak, so well! I could never have done that on my own.I also had to learn how to delegate and communicate better, and I certainly am learning still. With two team members it meant that I had to split the day up, communicate exactly what I wanted photographed and HOW I wanted it photographed, as well as assign jobs and tasks. For my assistant I had to make sure that she knew where I wanted equipment, how I wanted it set up, when it was appropriate to take pictures and when it was appropriate to stand back. It was certainly a learning curve for me, and I am so appreciative of the patience of my second shooters and assistants, especially when I found myself at a loss for words;).So as this year comes to a close I am thinking ahead to the next. Do I want to continue to grow the team? I'm not sure. What I do know is that I have thoroughly enjoyed working with a team during this past wedding season and I am thinking about the possibility of extending that into the office by potentially bringing on an office assistant next year. We shall see. I'm so thankful for this past season of learning and for the wonderful ladies who helped me grow and succeed this year. It's been a joy to be a part of.
The Art of Balance
My Why, The Reason Behind It All
When I started my business several years ago there was a reason. As many of you know, I was a news photographer at the time and I loved my job. But I also felt a calling somewhere else, a pull and a desire to do something different. And so for many months I would have late night conversations with my husband about whether or not I should step out in faith and start my business.
There were many reasons to start my own business, very good reasons. But there was one that we kept coming back to again and again. And that was for me to be able to do something that I loved that also gave me the flexibility to have a family. I remember my first day working from home, and I couldn't contain my excitement. I was starting to build a life of my own, a life that included a business that I was passionate about and the opportunity of starting a family.
Fast forward to 2013 and I found myself with baby and business. As I've thought about this past year, I suddenly had a lightbulb moment. Looking back over this past wedding season, I've realized I was doing exactly what I had set out to do. I started a business, I've watched it grow, and now here I was being a mom and running a business. Full circle. Whoa.
There are a myriad of reasons why work. Not to be confused as to why I photograph weddings (that's a whole separate post in of itself!) But ultimately, it's not because I want to garner a huge following, or photograph the most expensive weddings. It's because I want to have the freedom to do something that I love : being a mom and photographer. And while to some this might not be the most glamorous of dreams, it's one that I could spend the rest of my life living. I love being a photographer, I love working with my clients, I love teaching others, I love being a wife, and I love being a mom.Photo credit to my great friend and amazing photographer Coco Boardman.
Michael & Lindsay Engaged
A Downtown Salem Engagement Session
My couples seem to have some of the most romantic and sweet proposal stories and Lindsay and Michael are no exception. Both met in DC and began their life together in the Nation's capitol. So appropriately they spend much of their time working in, living in, and enjoying the city and the surrounding Virginian countryside. On a fall afternoon, Michael took Lindsay to a restaurant at Patowmack Farm for a short weekend escape in Northern Virginia. While seated at a gazebo, beneath the shadow of the mountains and overlooking the Potomac River, Michael knew it was the perfect moment to propose. And so on bended knee, three years to the week after he and Lindsay first met, Michael popped the question. Of course Lindsay said yes, and well the rest as they say is history!
This past weekend I met Lindsay and Michael in downtown Salem for their engagement session in this historic city. Next month they will wed at the Hawthorne Hotel and so we spent much of the time imagining just how wonderful the day will be. I just adore these two and I cannot wait to celebrate with them in November. But until now, enjoy this sweet duo and their beautiful fall engagement session in the Witch City!!Lindsay, you are beautiful!!Salem is the perfect location, so much history!!I couldn't get enough of Lindsay's coat, I'm a sucker for big, nautical details!!Work it guys!!Many of the buildings were closed due to the government shutdown, but that didn't stop us from taking advantage of the beautiful architecture!!How adorable are they?!These next sets are some of my favorite from the day, I loved how Lindsay's red dress popped against foliage.Love.Before a quick outfit change we found this little area which I think might have been someone's private garden. Hey we had to take advantage of the beautiful light ok?!While Lindsay and Michael changed into something more comfortable I photographed her beautiful ring.Michael, always making Lindsay smile.Fall comes and goes to quickly...How perfect is this little stoop?! It was like it was made for these two...Congrats on your engagement Lindsay and Michael, I had a blast hanging out with you!! I can't wait for next month!!
Running, Running, Running
Training For My First Half Marathon
For the past month or so I've been training for my very first half marathon. And while I've told a few people I've kept it mostly to myself. Partly out of embarrassment and partly out of disbelief. I've always liked to run but I've never considered myself a runner, the farther distance I've run being a 10k (which is 6.2 miles). Not a short distance but nothing quite like a half marathon distance. It wasn't until my college roommate Julie, who got into endurance and distance running following school, ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon that I even started considering running that sort of distance.
The race is held in February, and last February I found myself seven months pregnant and in no condition to run, at all. Prenatal yoga was all my body would allow and so I put my bucket list dream of running a half marathon on the shelf. After Jonathan was born I started to think about running again and what my body might allow me to do. I had gone nine months without running and was terrified to get back out on the road. Could I do it after baby? Could I find time to train while running a business? Could I run with Jonathan, would it be safe for him? All of these questions ran through my mind and to all of which my husband answered, "YES YOU CAN." And so for my 30th birthday (as an early present) with the blessing of my hubby, I signed up for the Disney Princess Half Marathon this coming February, (the race just happens to fall on my actual birthday too)! It hasn't been easy but with the support of a great husband, a loving family and friends to run with I've some how managed to find the time to run, and actually enjoy every minute of it.
This past Monday I ran a qualifying race for the half, the Tufts 10k For Women. This is the third time I've run this race and it sure is an exciting one to do. Surrounded by THOUSANDS of other woman, I ran the streets of Boston with the biggest smile on my face. The biggest of course when I would get to see my husband and baby cheering me on. I thought about why I was running...To make a certain time? To prove I was good? To brag to others that I did it? No. I ran for my baby, for the pure joy of being able to run again and for the joy it is to set a goal and work towards it. When I crossed that finish line I couldn't stop smiling. I even did something I never do and raised my hands at the end and cheered. I felt like a dweeb but I couldn't help it! Monday was a victory of sorts for me. Five months following the birth of our child (including a last minute c-section), I ran a 10k and finished strong. I was proud of what my body could do and proud of myself for sticking to my goal. I can only imagine how I will feel in February when I cross that finish line.
So with that, I'm training for a half marathon, a distance I never thought I would ever train for. And despite my worry of what others might think and my fear of falling short, I'm putting it out there because I am going to finish and I am going to accomplish my bucket list goal. All while wearing a tutu in the happiest place on Earth. Right? RIGHT! In the next few months I hope to share a little bit more about how the training is going and of course ask the most important question : What character should I dress as?! But for now I'll leave you with some pictures of the best cheering squad around, my family!!
Milton Hoosic Club Wedding | Michael & Samantha
Michael and Samantha first met when they were young and living in New England. But it took a chance meeting in Chicago for the sparks to fly and love to blossom. Every since reconnecting as adults Michael and Sam have been by each other's side and have a built a life together in the Windy City, where they fell in love. But when it came time to plan their wedding, Mike and Sam knew that the perfect place to say "I Do" had to be in their home state surrounded by their family and friends.
They chose the historic and charming Milton Hoosic Club for both their ceremony and reception. Samantha, who loves antiques and things weather with character, simply loved the charm of the Club and worked hard with her family to create an inviting and cozy atmosphere for her guests. Antique photographs of family, flickering candles, a beautiful chuppa. The details were carefully chosen to be a perfect reflection of who Sam and Michael are and the things that they love.

October Self Portrait
I know that this month's self portrait is filed more with pictures of my son than it is of me. But that's how this month has gone. I'm grasping at every moment, trying to savor this little guy as he quite literally changes by the second. And to be honest this last month has been a whirlwind. I've hardly had time to breath let alone take a self portrait.
It all started at the end of August when we moved into our new home, which we love by the way!! With a new home comes new responsibilities, projects and a never ending to do list. Add in a full fall wedding season and a little baby and I've been left with very little time. I'm not complaining though, as each moment of the last few months has been filled with things that I love and I'm so grateful for each facet of my life: my family, my baby, my job.
Earlier this month I had a rare Saturday off and so we decided to make the most of it and create some fall memories with Jonathan by apple picking at our local orchard. I think he was most fascinated with the hay, but we fully enjoyed ourselves:).Baby model, no?!;)With my second to last wedding of the year happening last weekend, our house situation secure and a new schedule with the babe, I know that our busy lives will be settling down soon. I'm looking forward to working on the house, decorating and creating a home, playing with Jonathan, going on a date (or two?) with the Hubby and just reconnecting with family and friends. But of course since I am a small business owner that means business never stops nor does my goals and dreams for it!! So even though we've been crazy busy, I'm still dreaming and goal planning for the months ahead. Which brings me to my Personal and Business goals for October!! Thanks for reading friends!!

Boston Harbor Elopement
Weddings come in all shape and sizes. And while most of my weekends are filled with beautiful and elaborate affairs, occasionally I'll have the pleasure of witnessing something a bit more intimate. Just the couple, their closest family and friends, their vows -- and that's just what happened when Beca and Brian tied the knot earlier this month in Boston.
Brian and Beca met and fell in love in Boston and so fittingly they chose to marry in the Seaport District in the shadow of the city's beautiful skyline. Brian's dear friend, former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, officiated while the couple's closest family and friends supported the couple. It was a beautiful moment to witness and a pleasure to be a part of such a special day for them.
I met up with Brian and Beca at the Boston Harbor Hotel to meander the Seaport area for portraits before heading over to the Moakley Superior Courthouse for their elopement ceremony. It was a glorious fall day in the city and it made for the perfect backdrop for this intimate elopement. So much love to you two, Brian and Beca!! Congratulations!!
Matt & Christina Engaged
A Harvard Yard Engagement Session
Do you want to hear one of the most creative and adorable engagement proposals? I know you do!! I think Christina out did herself with this one. First, Christina proposed. Not being one to be defined by gender roles AND coupled with the fact that she just KNEW Matt was the one, she decided she would pop the question. (Matt felt the same and was going to propose but Christina beat him to the question;)).
Having both attended Harvard University the two spend a lot of time together in and around the campus. Matt studied biology and so Christina devised a plan that would incorporate the lab he spends most of his days in. After managing to convince Matt they NEEDED to head to the lab Christina created a diversion and slipped something under a microscope. When Matt returned she egged him on to look through the scope. There he discovered a laser engraved piece of glass that read "Will you marry me?". Of course Matt said yes and they spent the rest of the evening celebrating their new future together!!
I kind of feel like that needs to be incorporated into a Big Bang Theory episode or something!! How cute AND romantic!! Appropriately for their engagement session we explored the campus of Harvard University since it has such an incredible amount of meaning to the couple. Christina picked out some of her favorites spots and through the afternoon of gorgeous light I photographed this amazing couple!!
They'll be wed next spring and are busily planning and organizing all the details of the big day. But for one beautiful fall afternoon they got to escape from the work, school and wedding responsibilities and just focus one another. I simply adore these two and I am so excited to share their engagement session with you.
Meet Matt and Christina! We started the session on the steps of Widener Library in Harvard Yard. Does any one else feel like Elle Woods should be appearing at any moment?! :-PHow cute are they?!Matt and Christina needed little warming up, they simply just enjoyed spending time together in front of the camera!A favorite for sure!I couldn't get enough of that gorgeous fall light!!Christina introduced me to the Loeb House and I simply fell in love!! It was a gorgeous little corner of the University!!Lovely!!Another favorite for sure, somewhere need underclassmen housing!! Who wouldn't love living in one of those beautiful buildings?I love the way they love. After a quick outfit change we headed over to Memorial Hall a beautiful building on the other side of Harvard's campus.Though the sun now was direct and harsh I used it to our advantage and loved the result!!Of course I have to incorporate the first signs of fall!!Following our stop at the Divinity School, Christina introduced me to another Harvard hidden gem, the The Minda de GunzburgCenter for European Studies.I simply could not get enough of Christina's beautiful ring.Another favorite for sure!!We ended the session at Churn, because like me, Christina is an ice cream afficionado. And really is there anyway better than to end an afternoon with the one you love than with ice cream? Nope.
Jonathan's First Year
Month Five
So I wrote out a whole post about how amazing Jonathan is, how he's changed out life, how I can't imagine life without him...and then I never hit save.
But I know I sound like a broken record these days so I'll save the ooing and aahing over my baby and just share with you these adorable pictures. Jonathan is five months old, and I simply do not know where the time has gone. I cannot wrap my head around the fact that I have a five month old. Didn't I just give birth...heck didn't we just get pregnant?! Time, time has been one of the biggest things I've learned with having a child. Time moves at rapid pace and it suddenly becomes this commodity I can't get enough of. Time is precious and we are trying to make the most of every moment with our son.
This month Jonathan was just the best. Everyone says that the middle months 5-7, are just the best, and well I'm going to have to agree. He is just SO FUN right now!! He flirts with everyone, coos, babbles, blows bubbles, sucks on my face, plays with his feet, rolls over, tries to crawl, sits up, and just about does everything as cutely as possible. He loves to be around people, loves to explore and it makes life so fun to experience through Jonathan's eyes.
Like I said, he's just one big baby ball of fun!Bwahahahaha, my favorite outtake.Of course I had to include this one. This is my view of Jonathan most days, on his tummy and on the (or at least trying) move...oh boy.Click here to see Jonathan's First Year month by month : If you'd like to see more, click here to see Jonathan's First Year month by month : Month One, Month Two, Month Three.
Ed & Sarah Married
A York Golf and Tennis Club Wedding
Sarah and Eddie met and fell in love on the campus of the University of New Hampshire, in a woodworking class of all places!! How cute!! Fitting, as I don't think any couple could be more endearing and adorable as Eddie and Sarah. To top it off they are one of the sweetest couples that I know, full of warmth and love for all those around them.
Sarah and Eddie could not have asked for a more perfect day. It was one of those magical fall days that can only happen in New England. The leaves had started to change, there was a slight nip in the air and the skies were crystal clear above the Atlantic Ocean. It was one of those days that can easily make one fall in love with all things New England.
Following their ceremony at Union Chapel in North Hampton and First Look at Fuller Gardens, Sarah and Eddie celebrated the night away with dear friends and family at the unique and historic York Golf and Tennis Club in York. I don't think there is anything I love more than a coastal New England wedding and this one had it all complete with some amazing DIY details!!
Sarah and Eddie, thank you so much for inviting us to capture such a special day!! It was an such an honor and joy to celebrate alongside you and your families as you married!! I hope you enjoy every minute of your honeymoon (and your images too!!)Sarah's mom gave her daughter two special mementos for her bouquet, a skeleton key to their home and a spoon pin.I loved this sweet note from Eddie to his Bride to Be!Sarah gave all of her Bridesmaids a clutch and handkerchief as a thank you for standing beside her on such a special day.Everyone in the room just gasped when Sarah put on her stunning Casablanca gown. She looked incredible!!I absolutely loved the back detailing of Sarah's dress, it fit her like a glove!!Sarah and her mom have such a sweet relationship and it was such a joy to watch them together throughout the day! Before we headed off to the First Look Sarah took a few minutes with her parents to give them a gift and thank them for being such an important part of her life.Sarah you made such a stunning Bride, it was a joy to have you in front of my camera!!I just couldn't get enough of her dress!!I adore this group of ladies, such amazing friends!!Do you remember the two ladies in this group, Alissa and Leah?:)! Love me some Deborah Zoe Photography Brides!!Sarah and Eddie chose to have a First Look and picked the beautiful Fuller Gardens for the location. It was absolutely perfect!!The grounds of Fuller Gardens are spectacular and full of so much charm!!Sarah and Eddie chose to marry at Union Chapel in North Hampton, the same chapel that Sarah's parents wed in. The place had such incredible meaning to the couple and it was an honor to photograph such a momentous and meaningful tradition!
I adore this moment captured by my assistant Karla right before Sarah and her father walked down the aisle, look at how proud he is!!MARRIED!!What better way to make your grand exit than by bubbles and streamers!!Following the ceremony I snuck the newlyweds off for some portraits overlooking the Atlantic. Then it was time to get the Bridal Party together for some fun!!See, FUN!!We took a short walk down from the reception to the York River where we were greeted by some amazing light and a slight breeze. As a present to Eddie for their wedding day, Sarah gifted him her grandfather's pocket watch. Sarah and Eddie held their reception at the York Golf and Tennis Club overlooking the York River in the historic clubhouse.Following the introductions it was on to the First Dance and the rest of the evenings celebrations!!Sarah and Eddie threw an amazing party, with family and friends getting their groove on out on the dance floor!!Business Time rocked the night away covering hits from the Beatles to Lady Gaga!Ceremony Venue : Union Chapel, North Hampton

Happy Anniversary : Jon & Diana
Happy Anniversary
I've had the immense pleasure to not only call Jon and Diana past clients but now also count them as friends. It's been a joy to be a part of their journey to marriage and now they've just celebrated their first wedding anniversary!! We first met almost two years ago to talk about their upcoming wedding. Since then I've watched as they finished schooling, moved, accepted new jobs, wed. And now I am overjoyed to share with you their First Anniversary post. These two have been through a lot in their first year, but what is incredibly clear is that these last twelve months have only strengthened their love and drawn them closer together. Read what they've learned about marriage, each other and working together over this past year below!!
D -- Happy anniversary! I simply cannot believe that it has been a year since your wedding!! Has time flown by for you too?
J&D -- Absolutely! It's strange to think about, but somehow it feels like we've been married forever and like we just walked down the aisle yesterday.D -- What is your favorite memory from your wedding day?
J&D -- We had so many incredible moments throughout the day, it's so hard to pick just one. One that stands out, though, was a moment we had to ourselves. After the night was over and everyone was on their way home, we stayed for just a few more minutes in the reception hall, talking about how wonderful the day had been and just taking a few minutes to appreciate how lucky we were. Jokingly, we decided to slow dance without any music and take a few moments to appreciate the day. Our incredible DJ, Matt Majikas, took the opportunity to put on one last song for us, using just his smartphone as he had just about finished packing up his equipment. So we danced to "Can't Help Falling in Love with You" by Ingrid Michaelson. It's a song we'd talked about before the wedding, but never really spent much time listening to. So there we were, empty wedding hall, dancing with just each other, with this beautiful song in the background, thinking about how incredibly fortunate we are to have each other and the rest of our lives together. The weight and joy of the whole day hit us both at once, bringing us both to tears. While there was so much from that day to enjoy and be happy about, it's this one moment that stands out most.D -- What has been the best thing that has happened to you as a couple since your wedding last year?
J&D -- We've had an unbelievable year filled with so many wonderful things. To pick just one is a challenge, but, if we had to, we'd probably say Jon graduating with his doctorate. With the stress and demands of a difficult academic program behind us, we've had much more time to enjoy each other and grow as a couple. D -- What have you learned about each other over this past year?
J&D -- More than anything, we've learned how to roll with the punches this year. There have been a lot of challenges that have come up and that are outside of our control, and we've learned that we can be each other's greatest source of strength in hard times.D -- Traveled anywhere fun?
J&D -- We've taken a bunch of small trips this year - Saratoga Springs, Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, Lakes Region in New Hampshire - but, we're very much looking forward to our upcoming trip to Europe this Fall.D -- Any tips you can offer newlyweds for their first year of marriage?
J&D -- We'd hate to pretend we're experts, but there are a few things we've learned this year. The most important is to always remember that you're teammates, and can always turn to each other for help. This can be hard to remember during stressful times, and definitely takes practice. But, when we've come up against a challenge, we've found the best (and sometimes, the only) way we get through it is together!

Lens choice is such an important part to documenting the wedding day. It's important to know HOW the lens and focal length will affect the look and feel of the image you create and you need to know just what type of lens to use in what type of scenario you are in. For example, if you use a 16-35mm lens during the Bride and Groom portrait time you'd have an entirely different feel than if you used a 50 or 85mm lens. Each lens performs differently and depending on how it's used can create variety and a certain FEEL to a client's image portfolio.
For me there are four go to lenses that I use for almost every engagement session and wedding. They are my work horses. As a one body shooter who uses all prime lenses (fixed focal length), I need an array of lenses to achieve the look I want, which are intimate, romantic and timeless images.
Every photographer has an approach and perspective for a wedding day, we all photograph the day differently. Study your lenses and how you want to capture the wedding day, then find the lenses that will help YOU photograph the day exactly how you want. Below I've outlined my favorite go to lenses, how I use that lens to capture different images, and have included the meta data.50mm 1.2
I use the 50mm throughout the wedding day for a variety of scenarios. From Getting Ready to the Portraits to Details and to the Reception I will always have the 50mm with me. 50mm is a focal length that is extremely versatile and allows me to capture various events through the wedding day while still giving me a little bit of compression and intimacy within the image. My favorite use for this lens is during the portrait session using an aperture f2. I just adore the feeling and type of portrait I can create!
50mm, f/4,1/200, ISO 125050mm, f/2, 1/1600, ISO 250050mm, f/2, 1/8000, ISO 80050mm, f/3.5, 1/640, ISO 20035mm 1.4
The 35mm is a newer lens to my arsenal and I have found that I use it most for Details, Large Group Portraits, and for the First Dance. This lens is a that I can always count on to give me consistent color and sharpness. This certainly has a different feel than the 50mm and does not give me the same intimate and tight feeling that I love. I use it more sparingly than the 50mm, but it is still a necessary lens that helps me to capture the day incorporating a sense of place, people and feel. This lens is also very useful for tight spaces and crowded dance floors.
35mm, f/2.8, 1/320, ISO 100035mm, f/4.5, 1/320, ISO 320035mm, f/2, 1/1250, ISO 400035mm, f/2, 1/1250, ISO 1600100mm 2.8
I use the 100mm primarily for Details and images of the Rings on the wedding day. I've experimented a little using this lens for portraits, but I love it best for it's ability to capture the details of the wedding day. From the rings, to the jewelry, to the little mementos that make up the story of the day, the 100mm is the perfect lens.
100mm, f/2.8, 1/4000, ISO 250100mm, f/3.5, 1/250, ISO 3200100mm, f/4.5, 1/40, ISO2500100mm, f8, 1/30, ISO 250085mm 1.2
The 85mm is a beautiful lens, one that I use primarily for portraits. It can be slow to focus and so I find that it performs best when I use it with somewhat stationary subjects. I absolutely love the compression this lens can create, with the focal length being just wide enough to incorporate scenery and background but tight enough that the viewer is focused primarily on the subject.
85mm, f/2, 1/8000, ISO 80085mm, f/3.5, 1/200, ISO 200085mm, f/2, 1/8000, ISO 125You can read more about what's in my camera bag here. If you have any questions about my lenses, how to pick the right lens, or creating the image you want, leave a message below!

Happy Anniversary : Pat & Kate
Pat and Kate are fellow wedding photographers, past clients and now friends. They just celebrated their first wedding anniversary on Sunday and I'm so excited to share their thoughts about this last year with you!! They are certainly quite the pair, Pat with his technical and logical perspective on life, Kate with her open and outgoing personality. Together are a team to be reckoned with having chosen to not only take on life together, but business as well!! I can't wait to see what the next year holds for them, I know that only fantastic adventures await!!
D -- Happy anniversary! I simply cannot believe that it has been a year since your wedding!! Has time flown by for you too?
P&K -- This may have been the fastest year of our lives! It feels like we were just in the midst of all of our wedding planning!D -- What is your favorite memory from your wedding day?
P&K -- We loved the entire day but I think our favorite moment was our First Look. It was so amazing to see each other and it calmed both of our nerves for the rest of the day. It was also great to have that private moment just between the two of us.D -- What has been the best thing that has happened to you as a couple since your wedding last year?
P&K -- I think being married has brought us even closer than we were before (and we were together for 6 years before we ever walked down the aisle!) Marriage definitely solidified our relationship and has made it even stronger. That's definitely been the best thing, in our opinion!
D -- What have you learned about each other over this past year?
P&K -- We've learned to understand each other better and listen to each other's perspectives. We are different in a lot of ways but we now embrace that and build off of it.D -- Traveled anywhere fun?
P&K -- We went to London and Paris on our honeymoon. It was such a great trip and we'd love to go back....like tomorrow! We knew we had to take the opportunity to travel like that then because after marriage, life gets in the way.D -- Any tips you can offer newlyweds for their first year of marriage?
P&K -- Work together on making decisions since you're now "one unit". It's a tough transition but doesn't have to be if you respect each others opinions. Also, just enjoy being a newlywed! This is a time in your life you'll never get back, embrace it!
Wequassett Resort and Golf Club Wedding Photos
A Wequassett Resort and Golf Club Wedding
There is nothing quite like the charm of a Cape Cod wedding. And Lauren and Patrick's wedding at the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club last weekend fit the bill perfectly. Navy blue blazers, preppy Vineyard Vine ties, a lace detailed dress, clear blue skies and an ocean view, what more could you ask for?!
Well, an amazing couple of course!! Lauren and Patrick are quite the pair. Lauren with her bubbly and effervescent personality, Patrick with his humor and friendly charm. Together they epitomize warmth, kindness and a genuine spirit. On their wedding day, friends and family could not say enough about this beautiful couple (and Lauren's infamous dance moves). Witnessing these two together those words could not have rang more true. Lauren and Patrick you truly are one of a kind.

It was an absolute joy to be a part of such a wonderful day (Interpretive dances and all;)!)Patrick and his entourage of guys got ready in a beautiful suite at the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club.As a thank you, Patrick gave all of his groomsmen a Vineyard Vines tie to wear for the wedding.Across the resort Lauren and her ladies prepared for the day.As I photographed the wedding details my second photographer Lauren captured this image of the beautiful Bride to Be.I loved all the tiny nautical details that reflected the seaside charm of Wequassett.Who doesn't love a sparkly pair of Jimmy Choo on a wedding day?!
I adored Lauren's form fitting Augusta Jones gown from Allegria Bridal.

Jonathan's Becca
Saying Goodbye To His First Babysitter
Today is a sad day in the Parker home. Today is the day we say goodbye to Becca, Jonathan's first baby sitter. In the next few days she will be leaving the chilly East Coast for the warm shores of Hawaii. (I am VERY jealous!!) This lovely young lady has been taking care of our baby for several days a week since he was two months old. With Becca's help I've been able to continue running my business and serving my clients knowing that our baby was well taken care of and loved. We will certainly miss her but know that Hawaii will be lucky to have her!!
Thank you Becca for all you've done for Jonathan, for making him laugh like no other and for taking such good care of my baby!! We love you!!
Kendra's Surprise Baby Shower
A Whim Events Creation
When I was pregnant I was lucky enough to have an amazing group of fellow photographers and friends throw me a surprise baby shower. I was completely shocked and overwhelmed at the incredible thought that went into throwing such a fun party for me and the babe! So when my friend Kendra's due date started to quickly approach I wanted to be able to do the same thing for her.
I contacted my friends, Moira and Natalie, the fabulous duo at Whim Events, and asked if they'd be interested in co-hosting a shower for Kendra. Being dear friends of Kendra's they quickly jumped on board and immediately put their talents to use. When I arrived at Natalie's home the morning of the shower I was absolutely blown away by the "simple" shower they created. It was so adorable and just perfect for Kendra!!
We successfully surprised and showered the mama to be and had a great time doing so! Despite the desperately hot temperatures (we're talking heat warning hot) we managed to enjoy every minute of our time together. I can't wait to meet this little bundle of joy soon!!How incredible are these details?! Natalie and Moira really outdid themselves!! Even the favors were tiny baby food jars filled with flowers, amazing!!The onesie station was my favorite!Do this picture accurately show how horridly hot it was?!The ladies also set up this cute drink station with "Mom-osa"s!!The beautiful mama to be!!
Jon & Diana Anniversary
A Church Landing Anniversary Session
Jon and Diana will be celebrating their one year wedding anniversary in just a few short weeks. It truly feels like yesterday as we watched Jon and Diana say "I Do" on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee while the rain POURED down. But despite any shortfalls in the forecast Jon and Diana had one of the most beautiful weddings ever. Their love for one another is simply infectious and a joy to witness. And everyone that day could not have been filled with more happiness than to see Jon and Diana marry.
So when I announced that I was going to be up at the Lake for Labor Day weekend Diana immediately contacted me about photographing their anniversary session. How could I say no? I absolutely adore photographing anniversary session (Dave and I even had one of our own!) There is just something so special about meeting a couple one year later, one year wiser and excited for what the next year holds ahead.
I somehow managed to convince Jon and Diana to wake up at the break of day to meet at Church Landing where we had their session. t was an incredible morning with an incredible couple and I'm so excited to share these images with you!! Congrats Jon and Diana on your first year of marriage. Here's to many more wonderful years together!!
The Art of Balance
Inspire and Invite, Thoughts on Leadership
Inspire and Invite. Years ago our Pastor gave a sermon on leadership. He describe leadership like an invitation, inspiring people to greatness and then inviting them alongside you in what you are doing. Leadership isn't about a singular person, rather how a singular person can inspire a community to change the world collectively. It's an invitation of "Won't you join with me?"
Lately I've been pondering about how I can change the way I think about leadership within my business and family. Am I inspiring others and inviting them alongside me? Am I working together with other people to not only better myself but to better the world around me?
In my business I can lead my clients in how I interact with them, provide advice, council and inform. I can lead my clients by helping them make decisions and even making tough decisions for them. I can lead by listening to their needs and executing decisions to help make their lives and planning easier. I can inspire through my desire to see their marriage celebrated and succeed.
When interacting with my peers I can lead by encouraging others in their own businesses and journey as entrepreneurs. I can invite others alongside in what I'm doing in hopes that as we inspire each other as we better the industry we're in. I can lead by choosing carefully what I share on the internet, on my blog, on Facebook and publicly. I can lead by a positive attitude, even if it's not the easiest choice.
In my family I can inspire my husband to lead our family through my encouragement of his spirit and showing him how much I love him. I can lead my son by teaching him how to treat others with love and kindness and pray unceasingly that he grow to be a man of strong character. I can even lead my son in the way that I treat my husband, my family and my friends.
I was struck last night as I thought about all these areas and asked the hard question if what I am currently doing is inspiring and inviting. It's not easy. I don't always lead well. I make mistakes and I often miss the mark. But I can truly say that I want to see other succeed, to dream and to work together to make a change in the world. Whether that's working with an industry peer or playing with my son on the floor, I can make choices every day to leave my little corner of the world better than when I left it.
Are you inspiring and inviting?
