The Evolution of a Brand

Branding.

Webster's dictionary defines branding as "the promoting of a product or service by identifying it with a particular brand." Nike, Starbucks, Apple, Banana Republic, BMW, are all companies with strong brands that use branding as a way to promote their products.

But these companies take the whole branding process one step further. Their brand is not just used to sell a product. To these companies their brand is the essence of who they are, defining everything that they do from how they interact with their customers to how they move their business forward. These are fully formed identities that set these companies apart from the rest, a compass of sorts that directs every decision that they make.

When I started my business in 2009 I knew that I wanted to build more than just a brand, I wanted to build an identity. But let's face it, this process takes time, a lot of time, and when you're just starting out you don't have all the tools to create such an identity. So you just start somewhere. That's exactly what I did, calling on my friend and budding designer, Tara to just "put something together" that made me look semi professional. And because all businesses have a logo, I thought that's where I'll start.

Now I'm not sure if this was the right way or the wrong way to approach the early stages of my branding. But I don't think that I could have been able to do it another way. When I was first starting out, all knew was that I wanted to be a wedding photographer. I didn't know the TYPE of photographer I wanted to be, or the TYPE of clients I wanted to work with or the IDENTITY I wanted to create. I didn't know how I wanted potential clients to PERCEIVE me or the kind of STYLE I wanted to develop. All I knew was that I need a logo, and so Tara created me one.

With the help from my amazing designer, Tara, my brand evolved. As the business grew and as I grew as a photographer, with each passing year I gained a firmer grasp on the type of business, brand and identity I was creating.

In 2009 I just wanted to start my business. I wanted to be a wedding photographer. And I really didn't have much else.

In 2010 I still wanted to be a wedding photographer but I realized that's ALL I wanted to be. I didn't want to be a portrait, children's, event or boudoir photographer. No, I just wanted to be a wedding photographer.

In 2011 I started to develop WHAT kind of brand/identity I wanted to create and WHO I was creating that for. But it would take a further journey to dive deeper into these questions that would lead me into 2012.

In 2012 I began getting specific about the TYPE of weddings I wanted to photograph, the clients I wanted to work with, the identity I wanted to convey and the voice I wanted to have.

As you can see this process has taken several YEARS, with a constant redefining process. How did I get here? By asking tough questions and then taking the time to answer. By consistently pushing forward, even if I didn't know where the future lead. By trying to building something larger than just a logo. By using the unique qualities I possess to create something more than just a brand.

Can you create an identity/brand for your business? Yes, absolutely. Be prepared though, the journey is long and hard (and never really ends). A journey that is worth all the sweat, tears and late nights. I've certainly learned a handful a lessons along the way and I've shared my top five below. I'm not a branding expert, rather just someone sharing what they've learned through a long process of hard work and self evaluation. These are meant to be tips to get you started, asking the right questions and headed in your own direction.

1. Ask yourself the tough questions and get specific.

As I prepared to reevaluate my branding and budding identity I had to ask myself some tough questions that honestly were hard to answer. Why? Because they required specific responses and many of those didn't match up to the brand I had begun to create. Questions such as: Who are you? Who are the people you want to serve? What kind of photographer are you? What is the message you are sending? What is your target client and what is your ideal client? How are you different and what makes you unique? These questions take time to answer and you can't rush the process. Sit with these questions, mull over them and be specific in your response. You'll then begin to see a clear picture of the type of brand you want to create, tailored to the type of client you want to serve.

2. Consistency is key.

An easier concept for me to grasp was consistency. Perhaps it's my OCD nature, but I love consistency, balance and organization. In order to build a STRONG brand you must be consistent. This applies to everything you do from your online presence to your blogging schedule to when you post on Facebook to how you correspond with your clients to how you act on a wedding day. People want to trust you and your business and you garner that trust through consistency. Is your website consistent with your blog? Is your Facebook profile consistent with your branding? Are you giving each client the same experience? Does your packaging match your brand? Be consistent in everything that you do.

3. Developing a style, a specific style.

It's taken me several years to develop a style as a photographer. But whenever I go out to a wedding or engagement shoot I have a specific vision in mind: To create intimate and iconic images. That's my style. That is the type of photography I want to create for my clients and that is the goal I have every time I pick up a camera. Are some people not going to like that? Sure, but that's ok. I want to work with people who connect with that vision, who have the same vision in mind when they are looking for a photographer.

4. Be specific and differentiate.

Building a strong brand is not about pleasing everyone. It's about catering to a specific niche. That process for me looked a little like this: Be specific (I want to be a wedding photographer) Differentiate (I want to create intimate portraits and iconic images for classic New England Brides). Be specific about WHO you want to serve and HOW you want to serve them. Look at Starbucks for example. They are a coffee company yes, but they also a LUXURY coffee company specializing in the client experience. They differentiate themselves through the experience they give their customers and in the way they price their coffee. Be specific and differentiate.

5. Let your personality shine and allow others to connect (or not) with you.

One of the BEST ways to differentiate yourself from other brands out there is by using YOURSELF and your unique character to be the defining factor of the brand you create. From your blog posts, to your website to your marketing materials, to the way that you dress, respond to emails, talk on the phone, and the photos to post to Instagram. These are all ways to leave your mark and ways for potential and current clients to connect with you. Be genuine in the things that you share (don't pretend to be someone you're not for the sake of building a brand) and the way that you connect with others. Give people an opportunity to connect with who you are and let that help you strengthen and grow your brand.

I hope that this helps you begin your journey to creating a strong, vibrant and unique brand. There is SO much more that we could talk about, as I've only skimmed the surface. If you have specific questions about branding and identity or about my journey, leave them in the comments section below. I'll be answering your questions all day and I'm excited to start the conversation!

Nick & Stephanie's Cambridge Wedding

A Cambridge Multicultural Center Wedding

Stephanie's sister prepared herself to speak. But every time she tired to begin her speech tears filled her eyes and she couldn't talk. Emotions overwhelmed her as she tried to describe just what Stephanie meant to her and just how happy she was to see her with such a wonderful man as Nick. It was like the room nodded in agreement, as Jennifer pushed through her speech describing the joy it was to be a part of such an important day, Nick and Stephanie's wedding.

Nick and Stephanie met during a chance outing in Harvard Square on an evening several years ago. A night that would change their life and start a journey that would bring their lives together. Six years later, to the date, Stephanie and Nick pledged their love to one another. Their wedding day overflowed with details that represented their past together and celebrated the future ahead.

So as Jennifer finished her speech, face wet from her tears, everyone raised their glass to Stephanie and Nick, to many more years of building a beautiful life together.

Coco started they day with Nick as he got ready with his guys. I loved the attention to detail like this fun cufflink!I started my day with Stephanie as she got ready at the beautiful Hotel Marlowe. I loved all of Stephanie's details, especially her adorable invitations and hand made veil! But what truly stole the show was Stephanie's sparkly Kate Spade heals!Hotel Marlowe has little seating areas all over the hotel and this area was the perfect spot for Stephanie's Judd Waddell gown. What would a wedding morning be with out some bubbly?! Stephanie's family and ladies watched as she got into her dress.Stephanie brought together a great team for hair and makeup! Many thanks to Jeannie Vincent and Jennifer Lebowitz for making sure Stephanie glowed on her wedding day!Could you be any more stunning Steph?!I absolutely adore when couples see each other before the ceremony! Here is Nick checking out his bride during their First Look!I loved all of Stephanie's little details. From her beautiful handmade hairpiece to her beautiful and sparkly belt!I love working with Coco as we see each pose, scene, location differently! Her image on the left and my image on the right.Stephanie and Nick were so relaxed and calm! It truly made for a great portrait experience and of course, beautiful images!Gorgeous Stephanie!Stephanie had such an amazing group of girls to support her on her wedding day!Check out their amazing shoes! The guys cleaned up pretty well too ;)!Stephanie and Nick chose the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center as their location for their reception and ceremony. In a courtyard tucked between several old and historic courthouse buildings they said "I Do."We took advantage of a few extra minutes following the ceremony for some more portraits. Stephanie and Nick basked in the "We're Married" glow!!Then it was off to the reception! Capers Catering did an amazing job catering the event. Mini lobster rolls anyone?!The reception was filled with unique details that told the story of Stephanie and Nick's relationship. The two met and fell in love in Cambridge and started their life together in Medford, so it was only fitting that touches from those two cities filled the room.Stephanie and her bridesmaids along with her family hand made all of the details you see. From the table runners to the hand painted vases to the floral arrangements. It was gorgeous!Coco's view of the First Dance on left and my view on the right. Time to party!

A Recap

When I began writing the Wedding Love series, I didn't anticipate how popular they would be. But the series has turned into a favorite of Brides and readers of the blog! They are some of my favorite posts to write; I love being able to share my experiences not only as a photographer but also as a Bride to those planning their wedding. The more information I can give a Bride the better the experience for her! Because we are smack dab in the middle of wedding season I often find myself answering questions, giving suggestions and acting as a wedding coordinator of sorts for many of my couples. After all, this is usually the first time they are getting married and naturally have questions ranging from their timeline, to their vendors, to the order of their reception. I'm always happy to help and give a guiding voice in their decision making process! To further help all you busy Brides out there planning your wedding day, I've compiled a list of all of my Wedding Love posts here. Quick, easy access to everything wedding!

Last week during our trip to Chicago we made a quick stop up north to see our dear friends the Schmidts. They live in Milwaukee, a short hop, skip and a jump up Lake Michigan from Chicago. They desperately wanted some family portraits of their growing family (our Godson is almost 3!!) and like any good friend would do I brought my camera along and took some images while we played in a lakeside park. Despite the humidity, the extremely bright sun and some sick kiddos we managed to have fun and get some great images! I love spending time with these four and though I was incredibly sad to say goodbye, we cherished our short day together. Enjoy!

Travelogue : Chicago

Monday and I'm back at it! We spent the last week traveling in the mid-west visiting family and friends. Today I'm spending the day catching up on office work, blogging and editing. But of course I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share with you some of my favorite images from the past week!

Chicago just might be one of my favorite cities. Shh, don't tell Boston. Well maybe it comes in a close second. There's just something so intriguing about the Windy City. It's much larger than Boston in population and size but yet it's always so friendly and quaint, maintaining a small city feel.

We started our time in the city visiting Millennium Park. I could hear a wave of beautiful classical music drifting in from somewhere. I thought it could be on a sound system but as I followed the music I discovered the Grant Park Orchestra rehearsing for their evening concert! We stayed for a while letting the music wash over the entire park. It was magical. The concert area of Millennium Park is simply stunning. It's huge and impressive and a great way to take in a concert!Directly opposite the concert venue is Cloud Gate which my family affectionately refers to as The Bean, but don't let the artist know. Can you spot my Uncle and I? We thoroughly indulged our touristy side this trip. And while we've already enjoyed The Bean and taken our pictures in it's reflection, we couldn't help but do it again!Just a short walk down from Millennium Park is the Chicago Art Institute. We didn't get a chance to go as there was a huge line and we were immediately distracted by the Starbucks across the street;).Next to the Art Institute is a beautiful and secluded garden with amazing views of parts of the skyline. Our next stop was Michigan Avenue also known as the Magnificent Mile. It's the Newbury Street and 5th Avenue of Chicago. Full of shops that Dave wouldn't let me go in;).Along Michigan Avenue are a few historic Chicago buildings like the Wrigley Building......and the Tribune Tower. As we checked out the Tower I reveled in my former life as a news photographer for a bit. I watched staffers enter and exit the building pretending, just for a moment, that it was me. Throughout the lobby are inspirational quotes about the importance of the news and good journalism. And I couldn't agree more! And here is my jokester of an Uncle showing off the famous Chicago pigeons;).And here are a few photos off the trusty iPhone. 1. I may 28 but I still love traveling with family:) 2. My Aunt and Uncle have an amazing luxury van that we get to indulge in when we're visiting;). Note to self, don't sit in the way back and watch Aerosmith videos. Car sickness ain't pretty. 3. My Dad, Dave and Uncle Fuzz joking around. 4. We played a family friendly game of mini golf. The Hammond's (my Dad, my Aunt and I) against the married into the family (Dave, my Mom and Uncle Fuzz.) They KICKED our behind;).5. You can't come to the Midwest without indulging in some frozen custard. I may or may not have indulged a few times. 6. Dave playing with our Godson Mason. 7. Besty shopping time! 8. Spending time with old friends is the best:).9. The Chicago Brauhaus did not disappoint. My clothes were much too tight after dinner! 10. The Bean...er...Cloud Gate. 11. Familia! 12. An obligatory couple vacation shot;).Chicago we love you and can't wait to visit again soon!

Land of Lincoln

A Trip West

This week we are spending a few days with family in Chicago. I'm excited to partake in frozen custard, copious amounts of German food, breakfast at Walker Brothers and late night laugh fests with the fam. It's a whirlwind trip but one that's much needed. And while I'll be working, just a bit, I'm excited to take a few days off to spend with the hubby and fam!

Monday we had the chance to see some of our best friends. We cuddled with our Godson, laughed until our sides hurt, played a little softball and just spent time reconnecting. We also took a few hours to shoot a few family portraits which I'll share next week!

Today I'm off to take in the Windy City and maybe a cup of frozen custard or two:). Happy Wednesday!

Ever since I was a kid I've loved watching sports, Olympic sports in particular. The pomp and circumstance of the opening ceremonies, the pride in one's country, the unbelievable strength of the athletes, it has always amazed me. Deep, down inside it made me feel like maybe, just maybe, I could do anything. Once again this year we were glued to our tv as we watched the opening ceremonies. And once again I loved every minute of it. The next two weeks will be entirely filled with much to much Bob Costas, track and field, and Ryan Lochte.

The Olympics are like an inspirational cornucopia. From the dramatic back story packages about athletes to the intense performances in each sport, you can't help but stand up and cheer! And already my inspirational tank has been filled. By a Nike commercial. Who would have thought that a commercial about regular, ordinary people would make me stand up and cheer? A commercial that would me make me feel like maybe, just maybe, I could do anything.

So this morning I hope to encourage you kick the Monday Muunndays to the curb and take the day by storm. Find your greatness in the big or small and go for it with all you've got!!

There are not grand celebrations here. No speeches. No bright lights. But there are great athletes.

Somehow we've come to believe that greatness is reserved for the chosen few, for the superstars.

The truth is that greatness is for all of us. This is not about lowering expectations, its about raising them for every last one of us.

Because greatness is not in one special place, and its not in one special person.

Greatness is wherever somebody is trying to find it.

Anyone else obsessed with the Olympics?!

Confessions of a Blogger

One million things. There seems to be a never ending list of one million things that I have to do. Then throw in a few unexpected twists and turns and well you've got one stressed out red head. I have to admit, one of the first things to fall victim to my increasing stress levels is blogging. Confession: I have been a bad blogger as of late.

It's not for lack of trying but my routine of blogging five days a week as been more of a three or four day routine, if I'm lucky. And every day I don't blog I feel defeated. As if my schedule, my stress, has won. BUT through it all I'm learning that I just can't do EVERYTHING. And sometimes I need to let go. I'm learning to give myself grace on the days that I fall short. And then charge head first and refreshed into the next. I can't do it all, but I sure wish I could!

For those of you who have a consistent routine, what do you think your secret to success is? What is one piece of advice you'd give to other bloggers? Do you feel the pang of guilt when you can't do it all? I'd love to learn the tips and tricks you find most helpful!

Here's to letting go, a little grace and the hope of blogging tomorrow;)!

July Self Portrait

Star of the Show

Not sure how to start this post other than to say thank you. My heart is overflowing with thankfulness today as I look back on yesterday. Yesterday was a big day, as we filmed my upcoming promo video. It's been a dream of mine for several years now to have a promo video created and yesterday was a culmination of all that dreaming and planning. I can't wait to share it with you in it's entirety later this year, but for now here's a sneak peek of all the behind the scenes action!

This month's self portrait really could not have happened without the amazing support and help of some wonderful people. Amanda McCarthy graciously offered to drive all the way to the house to give me a mini makeover. Meghan Jones joined her and together they glammed me up and made me feel like a movie star, creating the perfect look for my promo video! Thank you ladies for your talent and friendship!

Tom and Melissa of Long Haul Films and their assistant Mia arrived to the house arms full of gear and donuts. Immediately they got to work transforming our home into what felt like the set of a movie! I think what I'll remember most about this experience is how comfortable Tom and Melissa made us all feel. I don't think we stop laughing the whole day, it was such a joy to work with them!

Diana and Jon walked into all the hustle and bustle of the morning. Cameras, lighting equipment and their wedding photographer sitting in the middle of the kitchen with the craziest hair they've probably ever seen. They chatted with the crew, loved on Maya and were amazingly gracious and helpful. They were so excited to support this little project of mine and I couldn't be more thankful to them. They'll be getting married in September and my hope is that I can give back to them everything they gave me yesterday!

Dave, who took a half day off of work to anxiously put his best actor foot forward, was my rock. I'm so grateful for a husband who supports me and encourages me and believes in me. I was a ball of nerves under my big smile and awkward laughter. But throughout the day he whispered "I'm so proud of you," giving me the courage to keep going. When I doubt, he believes and I'm very happy he'll be a part of all of this.

Here's a behind the scenes look of the craziness that was yesterday!Jon and Diana hired me for their September wedding but never got the chance for the at home client meeting experience. We were able to recreate our first client meeting together and talked about some important real wedding details! Honestly it was like reliving a first date and a therapy session all mixed into one ;) Here I was pretty excited about something. Mostly the amazing-ness of Downton Abbey and Parks and Rec. These are the types of things we get to talk about at client meetings :-p.Tom and Melissa of Long Haul Films are rock stars and couldn't have made this experience any more amazing! It really drove home the importance of not only working with a talented team but people who you trust and ENJOY spending time with! Here is my view of the whole process. I think this was the point where Jon asked when the explosions and alien invasions were going to happen. Nonono Jon, it isn't THAT kind of movie;)!Really, let's be honest, Maya was the star of the show yesterday. She hammed it up for all it was worth for her 15 minutes of fame. And gave extra licks as thank yous to the crew and talent;)I've been dreaming about this promo video for years now and I truly cannot believe that all the pieces have fallen together. I have amazing clients to work with, an amazing team to produce the video and an amazing husband to encourage me, all wonderful people who support me and worked together to make this dream a reality. Yesterday was fun, stressful, tiring, and amazing. I'm so, so grateful.

101 in 1001

An Update

Remember January? Does any one else feel like it was yesterday and yet a million days ago? It's so funny how a year can make life seem to speed by yet with reflection you realize just how much time has past! In January I started a 101 in 1001 goal list as a way to stay accountable to the dreams and goals I had for the future. I'm still along way from completing this list but I am pretty excited about the things that have been crossed already this year! Going through my goals I've realized that the list needed a bit of a overhaul already! Many of the goals that I had at the beginning of the year have changed and I find my life headed in a different direction. I think that is what is so amazing about doing a goal list like this, it's a chance to look back to where you were, see where you are now and adjust where you want to go! I've made a few tweaks and set back out to see many of these goals achieved.

Have you started at 101 in 1001 list? Or do you have a goal you want to see completed this year? I'd love to hear what your dreaming about!

Ask Anything

The Black and White Image

If given the choice between a color image and black and white image I naturally gravitate towards the black and white. I'm not sure if it's because I started my photography journey with film or because of my background in journalism. Whatever it may be, I love a great black and white image! When I first started my business, my style of processing images was all over the place and that included my processing of black and white images. Sepia, selenium, warm, cool, fancy actions, you name it I applied it to my images. It was inconsistent and it caused me much frustration when it came to editing images!

I was determined then to pick a style and stick to it. I spent several weeks playing with filters and actions and eventually stumbled onto a style that worked for me. I realized that just decreasing the saturation on an image wasn't enough for my style. I love warm images and the intimacy that creates between the image and the viewer. So naturally my black and white images had to have that element of warmth in them.

Using Totally Rad Actions I custom created an action that I apply to all my black and white images, giving the images a small added boost of warmth. To really see how this treatment changes the image, I've shared an image that I originally converted to black and white for Pat and Liz's wedding. Here is the original image in color:0001_deborah zoe photography boston wedding photographer boston new hampshire farm wedding.JPGAnd here is the image with decreased saturation at 100%. It's a little bit too cool for me so I applied my custom action.0002_deborah zoe photography boston wedding photographer boston new hampshire farm wedding.JPGHere is my treatment of the black and white image. 10% selenium and 10% sepia makes for the perfect amount of warmth without taking away from the image!0003_deborah zoe photography boston wedding photographer boston new hampshire farm wedding.JPGHere are a few more examples of images converted from color to black and white. This is from Debs and Alex's vineyard ceremony last year.0004_deborah zoe photography boston wedding photographer boston new hampshire farm wedding.JPGFor me a black and white image should have a range of tonalities through out the image. I don't want my shadows to be too dark and my highlights to always be blown out, but I also want the image to maintain a bit of contrast within the photo. I've worked hard to find the balance between those three things and have tried to train my eye to watch for them as I edit. When I first edited my images they were dark and heavy and overly processed. I've learned to lean less on Photoshop and today try to edit my images as little as possible keeping the image true to the capture.0005_deborah zoe photography boston wedding photographer boston new hampshire farm wedding1.JPGThe lovely Stacey from our styled shoot at Elm Bank in color and black and white.0006_deborah zoe photography boston wedding photographer boston new hampshire farm wedding1.JPGSam and Diana share a kiss on their wedding day. I can't decide which one I like better!0007_deborah zoe photography boston wedding photographer boston new hampshire farm wedding.JPG0008_deborah zoe photography boston wedding photographer boston new hampshire farm wedding.JPGLike with anything, consistency is key. Find a style that works for you and then repeat it over and over and over again. It took a few tries but eventually I found my style of editing black and white images and have never looked back. I love that all my images have a cohesive feel and that I have a consistent system for treating those images. If you have any questions about how I edit my black and white images, leave a comment below!

Six Years

Six years ago tomorrow I married my best friend. And I will certainly not sit here and sugar coat it. These six years have been HARD WORK. But I can't imagine putting in all the time, effort, energy and love than with anyone other than Dave. We've built a strong foundation of trust, companionship, love, and friendship over these past six years. A foundation that will help take us through the long haul, to finish strong together.

When I stood in front of all our family and friends and promised my life to Dave I knew that he was the person I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with. The person who I was to love through the good, the bad and the ugly. I was excited to meet life's challenges head on together and celebrate life's joys hand in hand.

But as I thought about our future on our wedding day, I never imagined the pride that I would feel with each passing year. Pride in our marriage. I'm so incredibly proud of how far Dave and I have come together. Two stubborn headed people who fell in love despite their imperfections, quirks and pig headedness. Two people who've made it work. Two people who have pushed through and fought for their marriage. Two people who have become more in love with each passing year.

2012-07-20_001.jpg

2012-07-20_001.jpg

So tomorrow we will spend the day together reflecting on these past six years. All the good, the bad and the ugly. Marriage is hard work. But it's valuable, honorable and completely worth all the sweat and tears we've poured into our relationship. Are we are fairytale love story, absolutely not. But I love us just the way we are. Imperfect people continually being refined, brought together in love.

Through Her Eyes

An Afternoon with Shaulita

Meet Shaulita, a young woman and budding photographer from Boston. We were connected by my good friend Liz and spent yesterday afternoon talking all things photography and business. I was blown away by this bright young lady who has a great eye and keen business sense, even at the young age of 16! I truly cannot wait to see where life takes her.

There is such a great sense of hope and expectation at her age. It was fun to see life through her eyes, what she likes, what she hopes for, what she dreams of. And after spending time with Shaulita I was reminded, that even though I may not be that bright eyed 16 year old girl anymore, I should never stop dreaming for the future. Life should be filled with that same sense of hope and expectation that I saw in Shaulita. Funny, I was there to mentor her, yet she was the one who inspired me!

Part of the afternoon we spent behind the camera, getting to know the ins and outs of the technical side of photography. As I explained depth of field and F Stops and ISO and exposures, I took the opportunity to use Shaulita as my model. Look out world, Shaulita's coming!!

A Day in Boston

Time with My Mom

My mom is an elementary school teacher. So that meant every summer growing up we'd spend it together. Whether that was going to the library to pick out summer reading books when I was a kid or going shopping for school clothes when I got older, we spent many summers together. Now that I'm older and married our summers look a little different. This is my busiest time of the year and judging by my mom's calendar, it's pretty busy for her too. However, we still make it a point to spend a day or afternoon hanging out, and yesterday we penned out a day just for us two. "I'm not even wearing a watch," my mom exclaimed! Which meant I was chauffeur, GPS and watch person too :-P.

My mom loves spending time in Boston so when we go in, I try to think of something fun that we have never done before. Considering that my mom has lived in Massachusetts her entire life, I'm going on 28 years here as well and the fact that Boston is, well, NOT THAT BIG, sometimes this can be a challenge! But regardless we always have a fun time together. (Like when Mom innocently kicked along a stone, right into someone's car and I choked on my water from laughing BWAHAHAHA)! I cherish the time I spend with her!We started the day in South Boston, a very up and coming part of the city. For people like Mom who remember what Southie was like it's interesting! She couldn't get over all the new construction, restaurants, condos and office buildings. I mean you just didn't go down to Southie back in the day. That's one of the things I love about Boston though, it's always changing and evolving!Hi Mom!Of course I needed my caffeine fix so I introduced Mom to one of my favorite bakeries, Flour! We then meandered around the waterfront and I took her to the Boston Fish Pier. It smelt LOVELY! (kidding.)After we left the Seaport District we headed over to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum I had never been to the museum before so I was really interested to see what it was like! It also sits on an amazing piece of land overlooking Boston Harbor. It was breath taking! My mom mentioned that even through she was a young girl she still "voted" for Kennedy. The museum is set up in a unique way as you follow JFK through his political career and I loved every little vignette! Dave makes fun of me saying that if you're from Massachusetts the Kennedy's are Royalty. And I have to admit, it's kinda true! Jackie O was such a fashionista! I loved her style! All around the JFK Library are inspirational quotes. I loved this last one we saw as we left the museum. I do realize that this picture, is well, NOT IDEAL!! But hey we needed one together! And give us a break... Boston summers are HUMID!!!All in all it was the PERFECT summer day. We walked, we talked, we ate pastries and explored new places, but most off all we spent time together! I couldn't have asked for more!

Wedding Love

Vendor Etiquette

I never thought I would have to write this post. I had heard of other photographers having trouble, but honestly I never thought it would happen to me. (Ok, ok, now I sound like some sort of life insurance commercial ;))

Honestly I never did. I have had the opportunity to work some amazing vendors in the past few years who have been a JOY to interact and collaborate with. But recently I have noticed an ever increasingly popular (and disturbing) trend: Vendors with cameras.

And no, I'm not talking about vendors who bring a camera with them to the wedding day to document their work. I COMPLETELY understand other vendors wanting to take pictures of their bouquet, their centerpieces, their entertainment set up, their cake, etc. In this digital age it makes sense! Vendors want to post to their Facebook page, their blogs and their websites and share their work with their clients! (And as for the images that I take on a wedding day, I am always happy to share with other vendors!)

What I'm talking about is something completely different. A trend that is not only is in poor taste and jeopardises the integrity of the wedding photos, but also puts my Bride and Groom in negligence to their contract, without them even knowing it!! What I am referring to is the "Other Photographer."

In my contract I state that I will be the only contracted photographer at the wedding. I'm the professional that the couple has hired to document their wedding. Basically all that means is that I am the hired pro at the party and that there will be no other people ACTING as wedding photographer. Guests and vendors of course are more than welcome to take images during the day, but their actions shall not interfere with my job OR act in such a way that mimics mine.

Unfortunately, recently, I have experienced times where vendors have directly interfered with my job, acting as the "Other Photographer". Standing in the middle of the aisle during the ceremony, standing behind me during the ceremony, getting in shots of the Bride and Groom, physically getting in my way, standing on the dance floor during the First Dance, pointing direct flash at the couple when I'm using natural light, and in one case taking pictures the entire day. This is frustrating, inappropriate, unethical and unnecessary. Please, if you are a vendor, understand that this does not help your couple and creates great confusion for the Bride and Groom and their guests. In short it prevents us from doing our individual jobs to the best of our ability. Jobs that we were hired to do.

My advice to every Bride and Groom is to speak with your vendors BEFORE the wedding day. Make sure you communicate with each other your expectations of behavior. Don't be afraid to share your photography contract with your vendors so that they can be educated on what is appropriate and what is not. Believe me, this was something I never even dreamed of asking my vendors about when we were planning our wedding. But with the accessibility of a "good" digital camera, this is a trend that is becoming more and more prevalent.

I think it's important to state that this post is not meant to be some sort of scathing article about vendors who bring cameras to wedding. Again, like I stated before, I'm all for it! As a small business owner I completely understand the WHY and the NEED for taking pictures of your work! But what I think is important to remember, is that we must work together to give the couple the best experience possible. And while our individual parts of the wedding day are certainly important, the wedding experience as a whole is what is going to leave a lasting impression on the Bride and Groom.

York Harbor Reading Room Wedding

York Harbor Reading Room Wedding

Finally, my couple, I want you to walk away with amazing pictures of your wedding day. I think we (your vendors) can ALL say that we want the best for YOU. We MUST WORK TOGETHER to provide you the best experience possible. Through proper etiquette, professionalism, and cooperation, we can help create (and document) the wedding of your dreams!

Summer New Hampshire Wedding at Curtis Farm

What better way to kick off the new blog than with one amazing wedding?! I knew Liz and Pat's wedding at Curtis Farm was going to be of the epic sort. Liz loves details and certainly has a great eye when putting them together. Add in their adorable sweet selves and, well, let's just say I probably squealed TOO much and said annoying phrases like O-M-G all day long! For many of Liz and Pat's friends, they'd tell you that this day has been a long time coming, after all the pair fell in love in kindergarten! Their wedding day was a celebration of all that they have been through as a couple and an anticipation of what future held ahead. It was a real joy to watch as these two love birds were married surrounded by those who loved them most!

Thank you Liz and Pat for inviting us in to celebrate with you! Enjoy your images!

It's Here!

A Whole New Look

Things look a little different around here! I like to think of it as shiny new coat of paint. Same strong foundation just with a whole new attitude.

It's been a long time coming, but today I'm excited to share with you the new look of Deborah Zoe Photography! I can't believe today I finally get to share all the amazing things that have been going on behind the scenes for over the past year! A new logo, a new name and of course the biggest and most exciting part, a new website and blog!

Tara of Stupendous Design originally collaborated with me on my old website creating me something I was proud to share with potential clients. But as I grew over the past few years I realized that I needed a new site that was more reflective of where I am now. Last year we brought our creative sides together to see how we could improve on what we started. Little did we know that we'd eventually just go back to the drawing board! Now, Tara has created a "home" for me on the internet, a place that just FEELS like me! I'm BEYOND excited to start sharing it with you today! Using Showit we were able to work on the new site up until a few minutes ago while maintaining my then current site! Showit made the whole process so EASY and is the perfect fit for my online home.

I also had the opportunity to work with the AMAZING crew, Dave and Brock from Infinet Design, to create a fully customized blog! I wanted something that complimented my new website but that could stand on it's own. Dave and Brock blew me away with their creativity and programming skills and put my dreams into a blog. I still get goosebumps when I open the new blog, I couldn't be happier! It was literally a DREAM come true, something I had wanted to do from the inception of my business, to be able to work with them! I'll be sure to post more about the experience working with Tara and Dave and Brock in the coming weeks!

There are few more surprises in store to share with you in the coming months! So make sure to stay tuned (and update your RSS feeds;)) to stay up to date!

Tornados (And Some Exciting News)

This week has been one of those weeks. Last week I wrote a post about life just swirling. And if that's true then this week, well, this week has been a tornado. There a reason why life has been moving at rapid pace these past few months, and I'm REALLY excited to share WHY tomorrow! You see, I will officially be launching my new website and blog along with new branding, a project of mine for almost the last year. A whole year's work of sweat, tears, and dedication. I can't believe it's launching tomorrow!! I am SO excited about what the future holds and I hope you'll join in the celebration tomorrow!!

Until then, I'm simply sharing one of my favorite pictures of my Maya Boo. Yes there probably should be some sort of law against sharing images with SNOW during the summer, but I couldn't help it!

Wedding Love : The First Look

**Disclaimer: I do feel the need for a disclaimer before I dive into this long post. While I do have strong opinions about a First Look, I completely understand that it is not for every couple. People have varying thoughts, ideas and traditions about what a wedding day should look like. And though I'll say it again later in the post I'm going to say it here before we begin: I would NEVER force a couple to have a First Look. While I do have specific opinions about the First Look, at the end of the day YOU have a specific vision for your wedding day, a vision that is IMPORTANT to protect.  As a Bride turned photographer my hope is only to educate you on the First Look to help you make a decision that is right for you.** With that out of the way, let's begin! Here's a candid First Look from this Liz and Pat's wedding this past weekend. The Groom could not have been any more adorable than when he saw his Bride!

I want to tell you a story. A story about my wedding experience.

Dave and I were married in 2006. I was 22 and he was 25. I was fresh out of college (by a few months) and he had just finished his first year at GE. We were EAGER to get married. We planned our wedding on a budget and did the best we could. We were some of the first of our friends to tie the knot and I remember thinking that I had no idea what I was doing. I just wanted to be married.

When it came to planning out the timeline of our day, I didn't even give it a thought. I knew when the ceremony would start and stop and when the cocktail hour would begin. My poor photographer as I think back on it now! He did the best he could with what little we (and the thunder-storming weather) gave him. We did everything in a traditional manner from our attire to our vows to not seeing each other before the ceremony.

Because THAT'S just what you did. There was no such thing as First Look (back in the days of 2006 ;)). We didn't even know that was an option.

This is how our "First Look" unfolded. I was a ball of nerves before the ceremony. I was a WRECK. And all that was getting me through was knowing that I would see Dave at the end of that aisle. That we would have "THAT MOMENT". Ya know some how time would magically stop, all Zach Morris style, and we would speak to each other the things that we were feeling. Well guess what, that didn't happen. Because do things ever go exactly the way you imagine them? Things like, my dress getting stuck in the doorway, my dad and I barely fitting down the aisle, the snot pouring from my nose, the makeup running down my face. As I brought my eyes to Dave to have our MOMENT, there was the look I'll never forget. HE WAS FROWNING. Dave was SO nervous that he forgot to smile. His best man had to lean over and nudge him, "Don't forget to smile!" Before I knew it I was at the end of the aisle and the ceremony began. No words were spoken to each other except for a whispered "You are beautiful" and we were off. That magical moment, yea that didn't exactly happen.

What did happen though was my Father walking me down the aisle telling me "Let's do this!" What happened was a beautiful moment as my Father gave me away. What happened was Dave came and replaced my Father's arm with his and walked me to the alter. Those moments were beautiful and memorable and ones I'll never forget. But believe you me there was no magical Zach Morris style moment for Dave and I.

If I could go back in time to the 22 year old bride getting married, I would have begged her to consider having a First Look. I would have told her about how it would save her timeline. I would tell her how seeing her groom BEFORE the ceremony would calm her nerves and give her a confidence of "Let's do this!" I would tell her how she would have amazing pictures in her album of her and husband, embracing one another instead of just the afforded "posed" shots. I would tell her just how special being able to speak to each other the things your heart is feeling really is. In short I would tell her "Have a First Look."

Now, a lot of people will say that having a First Look takes away from that first time moment when you see each other as you walk down the aisle. And I have to be blunt. I disagree. Because that moment as you walk down the aisle, nothing can compare to that. That moment when your Dad gives you away to your husband is a special moment in of itself and a First Look is not meant to replace that. A First Look is not meant to replace that moment when your Groom watches his Bride make her way towards him. A First Look is only meant to compliment those moments. And while I know that it's hard to understand that NOW, trust me. Whether you see each other before the ceremony or as you are walking down the aisle, those moments are both equally special and beautiful and moments you will never forget.

Still with me?:) Let's fast forward from 2006 to 2011. Because Dave and I had a RAINY wedding day, because our timeline didn't afford many pictures, because we didn't have a First Look, our wedding day images are not truly indicative of us. We were always longing for images that truly represented who we are as couple. So as an anniversary present Dave arranged for one of my favorite photographers Katelyn to come to New England and "retake" our bridal portraits. And guess what we decided to do: Have a First Look.

You may ask WHY we decided to have a First Look. Dave and I had been married for five years at this point. He'd seen me at my best and he'd seen me at my worst. My friends, the mystery was LONG gone. Besides it's not like he hadn't seen me in my wedding dress before! Why would we have a First Look??

Because a First Look is NOT about when you see each other or how many pictures you can take before the Ceremony. It's about HOW you feel as your Groom watches you come around the corner. It's about the butterflies dancing in your stomach as you watch the smile on his face. It's about falling into his arms as you share in a moment you'll never for get. It's about having the TIME to speak to another what's on your heart. It's about creating the space and the time to express to one another how you truly feel. That is what a First Look is meant to do. And it's just as special on your wedding day as it is five years later. That moment NEVER changes because it's not centered around a tradition, it's centered around YOU.

As I look at this picture, I remember exactly what I was thinking as I walked down those steps. I felt like a little school girl, wondering if the boy I liked thought I was pretty. I remember the butterflies dancing in my stomach as I made my way to him. I remember falling into his arms and having a moment we NEVER shared on our wedding day. Five years later it was as if we were reliving our wedding day, making a memory we never had the chance to create.  This is the moment I realized just how special the First Look truly is. On the wedding day or five years later.

Look at his face! Look at that smile! After five years of marriage and he STILL looks at me that way! Swoon;)

I'd like to make one more point before I get off my First Look soap box. Dave and I are very traditional people. So much so that we didn't live together before we got married. We did almost everything in a traditional way from our courtship, to engagement even down to our wedding day. And if I were to get married again today, I would do it all the same. Except for one thing, I would have a First Look. If you are a Bride or Groom who wants to have a traditional wedding, I understand! I was that Bride too! But I hope that what I've shared with you will help change your perception of what a First Look is and how that CAN fit into your traditional wedding day without taking away from the traditions that are so important to you. Remember a First Look doesn't take away, it only enhances.

I'll end by saying that I would NEVER force a couple to have a First Look. While I do have specific opinions about the First Look, at the end of the day you have a specific vision for your wedding day, a vision that is important to protect.  As a Bride turned photographer my hope is only to educate you on the First Look to help you make a decision that is right for you.

For us a First Look, even five years later, was incredibly special. In that moment I fell in love with Dave all over again. It's a moment I'll cherish forever. It's moment that was captured by a camera to be relived for years to come.
